Is it just me, or has Halo slowly lost its mystery as graphics and what not have progressed? Don't get me wrong, I love all the Halo games, but there's a difference in feeling between staying up all night playing Halo CE /Halo 2 and Halo Reach. Halo 1 &2 had this eerie-ness about it that always kept you on edge. The multiplayer maps were quiet, with the exception of the random "Halo" background noises if you know what I mean, and that always kept me on edge and ready for the next kill. It made you want to crouch around in a game of snipers and hold your breath until your shot was fired for a headshot. And because of that silence every sound effect, gun shot, and plasma explosion was way more intense. But by Halo 3 I feel like Bungie got into perfecting the details too much and making thing look pretty, but then sacrificed playability in return. Like my title says, maybe I'm just nostalgic, but Halo 1&2 just have that feeling that brings you back again and again. I know this isn't really anything that can be changed but I'm hoping Bungie's next game really takes all us "Veteran" gamers, so to speak, back to the good old days. I'm a die hard Bungie/Halo fan and this is in no way meant to bash these games, I just wanted to share my opinion on their progression and evolution.

That furry little bastard

I have to agree with you! The multiplayer might be different but it's still awesome it had to be done and I'm very happy with theses progressions/evolution! The thing that makes me nostalgic is when I think of how I was anticipating each and every Halo game after I would finish the last one. And watching all trailers one after another to satisfy my ''halo thirst''. I can remember having goosebumps hundreds of time while I was gazing at these! I want to go back when Bungie had still a lot of Halo games to make... Bungie had and epic journey with the Halo series and so did I. I will always remember and cherish those awesome memories :).

Yeah I know exactly how you feel ANBU, I think we all feel that way. Maybe I was just so intrigued because I was younger, who knows! But I still love the feeling of popping in a new Halo game fresh out of the plastic seal and embarking on another epic adventure.

Bump for more discussion.

The Flood has a big influence on it, although I agree, in the last 5 games, I didn't feel it.

The most eerie feeling I got was the skybox in Halo CE, Threshold and the Forerunner ruins still give me the creeps
:)

Yeah that's the feeling I'm talking about! The Flood definitely adds to that mystery. I also always like the dull textures from CE and H2, they just really fit the whole futuristic space theme.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

This is why I loved ODST. It really went back to the CE feel of mystery and ambience that the others (albeit Halo 2) failed to capture.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I think that is because ODST was new. Familiarity breeds contentedness, not excitement.

Halo: Combat Evolved was the first kiss of a glorious relationship. Halo 2 and Halo 3 were nice and passionate, with a hint of tongue. Halo 3: ODST was the glorious, drunken makeout, and Halo: Reach was the attempt to liven the relationship at a bed and breakfast, but really it just feels awkward doing it in someone else's house.

We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had.

ODST was great about that, as was CE.
That said I don't believe the point of 2 or 3 was mystery, but discovery and answering the question the first game brought us.
And Reach being about the sacrifice of Noble team so the first game could happen.
So yeah I think nostalgia gets to us all, and it's defiantly hard to fight it and shake it off.

I loved your analogies here prometheus. Until now I never thought of the Halo series as kisses lol. But it's all very true. And I'm hoping Bungie's next game sticks to a simple format if the multiplayer is similar to Halo's. The equipment and AA in H3/Reach kinda took away from what had originally made Halo CE and Halo 2 multiplayer fun as well as a skill to improve upon.
