thats why I argue for halo 4 since its a start to a new trilogy for 343 to start fresh with the utilitarian weapon so the new kids will get accustomed to it.

Exactly. Players have the false mindset that the AR will "rip and tear" through enemy forces in Multiplayer just like it does in Campaign/Firefight. Players aren't really FORCED to combat against precision weapon enemies as often in campaign/firefight.

How many encounters in campaign/firefight are you constantly fighting against precision weapons? Not many. Halo 2 Jackal Snipers/Halo 3 beam rifles.

I feel as if it "trains " the player into thinking the AR is the default "go to" weapon.

$0.02

But the more I think about it, the AR has not been useful in anything higher than 'Normal' difficulty since Halo: CE. In Heroic and Legendary the AR is only useful in CE. In 3 and Reach the AR is a glorified baseball bat.

We're really getting closer to solving this mystery. I can feel it.

I occasionally play Co-op Campaign online as I try to max commendations by properly playing the game, and when these Captains and Warrant Officers with me vote for maps on Normal difficulty I see them spraying ARs and fistfighting/ninja'ing through levels more than anything. These are the same players that, when I pick heroic or legendary difficulty, they're the ones getting beat down by the Elites/Brutes and wind up quitting. It's the same in firefight. If I fool them into picking Limited (click none of the above, then limited at the last second) they're around for the first 3 minutes until they've died 5 times, and they quit with melee as their ToD and a neg K/D vs the CPU.

A lot of these people who vote AR starts are probably the same that ninja their way through the campaign/firefight on lower difficulties (normal in campaign, arcade in FF) where the AR/Melee is useful. It's the the bulk of their skillset.

The whole point of starting with crap weapons is to find other ones on the map and use them effectively.

Otherwise we might as well start with a Spartan Laser and Rocket Launcher and go from there :/

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

It promotes map movement and weapon variety.

That actually sounds fun.

Then again, that's coming from someone who is better at a laser than any other weapon. (me)

... We should have DMR starts on large maps, you're right. AR starts on them is silly.
(Edit: Although, for Anniversary, having the Pistol secondary is pretty much the same thing. So having the Pistol Primary and AR second would be just fine for large maps I think)

But for smaller maps like, as you say, Anchor 9 (though I think we'll all agree that's on the VERY small end of map size), it adds weapon variety (since people aren't just using the Pistol and DMR) and changes gameplay since people CAN use those weapons, but everybody doesn't necessarily HAVE them. I like it.

The AR has always been worthless in Reach. That has never stopped kids from using it.
says the man who has 1,500 deaths and 0.85 k/d to the ar. for a "worthless" gun you seem to die by it alot.

Now compare that number to every other thing that has killed him.

What?
considering the play lists that he plays in. which is usually higher end lists. Thats too many deaths to have by a supposedly "worthless" gun.

The variety argument is what I'm challenging the most, though. It doesn't seem to promote any variety. The only additional weapons being used are the magnum and the AR. Coincidentally, you spawn with both of those. It's more forced variety than anything else.

Besides, if you play for variety why not vote for DMR starts and have your AR as your secondary? You'll be handicapping yourself but if you play for variety I highly doubt stats matter to you.

crispyham -

That's not what they are saying. It is difficult to have a positive K/D with a weapon you don't use. It's just basic statistics - if I don't use a weapon the more I play the more negative I will become with that weapon because others WILL use it.

I think the only weapon I have a negative K/D with is the Needler. This is because I never pick it up. It's not that I'm bad with it (the needles home in for Christ's sake).

i like that you can insult but cant back up your claim when you said the ar is "worthless" yes you've died so many times in high end play lists to that gun.

Now if your deaths to the ar were as your deaths to the plasma pistol your claim would have more credibility.
