The difference's include...
Longer barrel.
Thiner and overall longer.
No bolt.
My guess is it's still an AR, but not the same AR. Perhaps the MA5C that fires the same caliber bullet as the BR. That way the ammo is interchangable. I think it's going to be fully automatic, but fire slower then it did in Halo 1. The pay off for the slower ROF will be an overall increase in accuracy.
The BR will likely remain intact but will have the single shot "Snipe" mode when zoomed added. Thus making it a true evoloution of the Halo 1 Pistol.
The SMGs will also remain and will still be the bullet hoses they are now.
How will these weapons balance with each other? I think they will compliment each other nicely. The BR's single shot mode will make Halo 1 pistol users happy and will provide the range and accuracy of the short to medium range wepons. The AR will be the every mans weapon. It's decent rate of fire, good stopping power, and increased accuracy will make the weapon great for the medium range brawler, and will be a good all round weapon for any given situation. The SMGs will keep there role of close range pain makers, but the inclusion of the new AR will not make the weapon as slap happy effective as it once. Basically the AR is the middle of the ground weapon that was needed in Halo 2. Currently you are either a BR user of a SMGs user and the two are vastly different in terms of how they are used. The inclusion of the type of AR that I described would allow gamers to be more effective against BR users at medium ranges, and will also provide enough punch and ROF to compete with the hail of bullets SMG users can dish out up close.
