Nope. Something that's underpowered doesn't mean it takes skill. Just look at the H2 needler.

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo Reach > Halo CE

Based on campaigns.

No, i never ever use it. It always comes with such low ammo, its underpowered, no scope, its a pointless weapon. BR master race

It is a headshot weapon, so of course it takes skill.

Anyway OT: I like it, and when paired with the Plasma Pistol it was actually useful. Especially in MM when I couldn't get a BR.

If Team Swat became ranked, would there still be no shields?

Amazing!

Loved the SMG/Mag combo.

I prefer the ODST pistol but dual wielding with the H2 magnum is much more formidable than the H3 and Reach pistol.

That's a pretty broad statement.

I never got to play H2 online, but for campaign the magnum was awe-inspiring. Campaign. Legendary. Plasma pistol+ Magnum combo. Nuff said.

To me, the pistol was useless, it was like shooting marshmallows at the enemy. It is my one and only gripe regarding weapons in H2.

As far as needing skill to use the pistol effectively, I can see both sides on this. In the end, any weapon has people using it with more skill and other people using it with less skill so there is a skill gap, I just don't know how much.

Sometimes, I dream about cheese.

i loved that weapon, my favourite weapon in the game infact. close range, low - medium damage, high ROF: semi-automatic pistol (like a gloc) which is my favourite type.

i'm more of a fast paced, assault player so i'll go for dual wieldables over the sniper anyday.

ofcourse the magnum recieved a big slice of hate from fans who are nostalgic for Halo: Combat Evolved (not criticizing them) but the Carbine or BR serve as fine substitutes IMO

the Halo 2 magnum looked nicer then the Halo 3 and Halo Reach magnum.

i was disappointed with Halo 3's pistol, that thing was nearly useless: can we all agree it should have done more damage or had a higher ROF. it's design wasn't pleasing as well
was glad the Halo 3: ODST pistol redeemed it.

Never used it online because i never got to, i used it all the time in the Campaign and it was awesome having it dual wielded and have a sniper on the rooftops of Outskirts

I loved dual wielding the magnums. When you shot them it sounded amazing, and they were powerful together, especially in SWAT.

I'm am serious, get out. All you do is complain about how bad Halo 1 and 2 are.

OT: I loved that little magnum. Looked like a real weapon, felt like a real weapon, and rained hell when dual wielded.

In mp, yes. You'd think dual wielding it would give it a major advantage but you have to fire both pistols at once or the damage isn't going to be much.

But in campaign, the magnum is useful for stunning enemies (when they do that stumbling animation). How I wish that they made it a 3rd weapon (like how it could be used with 2 other weapons on H1's PoA via 3 weapons glitch). I can think of several encounters where that would have been useful before I switched to the BR or Carbine.

I think the mistake most people make with judging the Halo 2 pistol is thinking about it as a single weapon. When Bungie designed the weapons of Halo 2 they never thought about the dual-wielding weapons being used by themselves. That's why the Plasma Rifle, Needler, and Pistol all seem to be useless by themselves. They're great with other weapons. Plasma Pistol + Pistol is deadly.

Syx has a great point, in order to keep some semblence of sanity Bungie had to tone down the weapons that were dual wieldable. Having said that:

1-The Magnum's rate of fire and damage is actually good enough to take down most non-skull affected elites in a single clip. It is not the GOD weapon that the pistol was in CE, but that is ok, given that the BR is such the superior weapon to the AR, I did not miss the CE pistol as much (headshots in CE are pistol oriented, in H2 they are BR oriented, diff guns, same results and fun).

2-Bungie obviously figured it would never get used much, or never intended it to be used much, as there is virtually no ammo around for it. That is truly annoying. You would think that pistol ammo would be cheap and plentiful!

3-With assassins active, the Magnum is a great weapon to light up the enemies so that friendly AI can get a bead on and put some rounds on target. But, due to #2, your options are limited. The SMG falls into the same category, a good cloaked enemy ligher upper.

Over the years I have -blam!-ed about the weapons in H2 vs CE, tactics you can't use and blah blah blah, but my recent attempts to apprentice under Grumpy and Sliding Ghost have shown me that there is an awful lot to admire about the game that is H2. I have found that the weapons are alot more flexible than I was originally willing to admit, and that you just have to think outside the box ALOT more with H2 to get away from how much the game can force the un-imaginative to play the same way each time. I love both games, even with the weenier, powered by a hampster, magnum in H2.

This, because a single pistol was useless to me I never picked it up on Legendary. Not enough ammo for dual and they are not always laying in pairs (at least that I know of). I just never want to be caught relying on that weapon in a bad spot but I guess I should have tried dual wielding more.

Fada beo Halo 2!

No. love the game, dislike the pistol. ODST and CE have the best pistols, in MP I spent a lot of time getting killed by duel Magnums, I just don't like shooting bb's at Spartans and expect them to die. lol

It is time to take up the mantle of my forefathers and restore the magnum's single wielded use in Legendary campaign. No mods.

Brb... to Outskirts!

Edit:

Ok, I just came back. I agree that it's so downgraded to the point that it's practically useless. The H3 magnum beats it in range and accuracy. My test results:

-useless at the vehicular sections. This is mostly because of lack of cps hindering my testing
-bad range so it's best against Ultra Elites and Grunts...
-in my initial testing, I combined it with the sniper (the sniper can stun enemies allowing you to go around and assassinate with magnum, which has a decent melee speed. Also, the sniper will weaken Elite shields for those delightful finishing shots from the magnum), plasma rifle, and grenades. On it's own, it's terrible but it's pretty decent when combined with the above.

Give it up for the practical H2 single wielded pistol! Just tested it on Legendary. Had a blast!

When up against multiple hangar Elites, it works way better with the plasma pistol than the BR (autoaim isn't helpful when you have 5-7 Elites standing right next to each other). Of course, I prefer the plasma rifle and SMG anyway; damn collision gets in the way of my plasma pistol overcharged bolts too often and dropping Elite shields with the overcharge is just going to make Elites take cover, and there isn't enough time for a second BR shot. I like weakening shields before I collapse them with the pistol. But thanks to the pistol's amazing rof, the problems above are nullified. Prior to the 2 hangar battles, Elite after Elite fell prey to the awesomeness that is the Halo 2 pistol. Not even Grunts could withstand it. I felt a lot more safer than when I had the BR.

At the second hangar, I did poorly against Elites after I dropped the magnum for the BR (not shown in the vid because it's humiliating). It was only when I switched back to the pistol that I could get those headshots on the Elites.
[Here's that footage (no sound because I was recording tv programming again)]
But then I made a horrible decision and left my position. There were 3 Elites left (2 Ultra Elite dual wielders and an Elite major) and I was getting very, very impatient so I blindly charged in after playing hide and seek games and got shot down. Ouch!

If I had stayed back, I could have killed them:

-I brought about 5 good battery plasma pistols from the area before the first hangar, as all the plasma pistols dropped in the first hangar disappeared. Clever Bungie. Good thing I saw this coming. :P Thank you experience!
-I had plenty of BR ammo
-2 places with pistol ammo (who said that the pistol did not have enough ammo? ;D I suffered ammo problems more often on Outskirts and in H3: ODST. One thing is for certain. The H2 pistol is not meant to be a primary weapon: use the BR and grenades on the Grunts and pistol on unshielded Elites)
-there's still some plasma grenades in the first hangar

So add more advantages to the magnum:

-very little autoaim :D
-awesome Elite killing machine
-allows you to save BR ammo
-works great with the plasma pistol's overcharged bolt (single wielded afaik)

But the pistol is useless on vehicular levels or ones that have Jackal snipers. You can't run through the whole level with it. And against Flood on Sacred Icon... *shudders* It seems to have been made for Cairo.
