Syx has a great point, in order to keep some semblence of sanity Bungie had to tone down the weapons that were dual wieldable. Having said that:
1-The Magnum's rate of fire and damage is actually good enough to take down most non-skull affected elites in a single clip. It is not the GOD weapon that the pistol was in CE, but that is ok, given that the BR is such the superior weapon to the AR, I did not miss the CE pistol as much (headshots in CE are pistol oriented, in H2 they are BR oriented, diff guns, same results and fun).
2-Bungie obviously figured it would never get used much, or never intended it to be used much, as there is virtually no ammo around for it. That is truly annoying. You would think that pistol ammo would be cheap and plentiful!
3-With assassins active, the Magnum is a great weapon to light up the enemies so that friendly AI can get a bead on and put some rounds on target. But, due to #2, your options are limited. The SMG falls into the same category, a good cloaked enemy ligher upper.
Over the years I have -blam!-ed about the weapons in H2 vs CE, tactics you can't use and blah blah blah, but my recent attempts to apprentice under Grumpy and Sliding Ghost have shown me that there is an awful lot to admire about the game that is H2. I have found that the weapons are alot more flexible than I was originally willing to admit, and that you just have to think outside the box ALOT more with H2 to get away from how much the game can force the un-imaginative to play the same way each time. I love both games, even with the weenier, powered by a hampster, magnum in H2.
This, because a single pistol was useless to me I never picked it up on Legendary. Not enough ammo for dual and they are not always laying in pairs (at least that I know of). I just never want to be caught relying on that weapon in a bad spot but I guess I should have tried dual wielding more.
