A Happy Pumpkin

So I just finished The Cole Protocal and I found on Halo Wiki, or whatever it's called, that the author says the events take place in 2535, if I remembered correctly. At the end of the book however Keyes gets promoted to Commander. When Keyes and The Pillar of Autumn find the first Halo Ring (2552 I think) he is referred to as Captain Keyes... Did I miss a demotion or something? Or did I screw up my sequence of events (even though I double checked)? I haven't finished all of the books yet so if I missed something I apologize. I like my stories in order and the Halo books make it difficult to follow.

2535 = before 2552.

Finding the love of my life, and moving house really screwed up my gaming orientated lifestyle.

Captain > Commander

Yeah, in The Cole Protocal (2535) he gets promoted to Commander. Then twenty years later he's a Captain... I'm pretty sure Commander is higher than Captain.

Commander is only O-5 while Captain is O-6

Reference

Nothing is wrong with Keyes' rank.

Hmm. Alright, just figured a Commander sounded higher than a Captain. Thanks.

Yeah. I'm back. Whatcha gonna do about it?

O-1 in the Navy is an Ensign, then O-2 is Lieutenant Junior Grade. O-3 is Lieutenant and O-4 is Lieutenant Commander. Commander is an O-5 in the Navy, or "Officer, Rate 5". Captain is an O-6. Captain is one step below a Rear Admiral; Rear Admiral is broken into two ranks. Rear Admiral Lower Half, and Upper Half. That's O-7 and O-8. Vice admiral is an O-9. Then there's an Admiral. That's an O-10.

After Admiral is a special rank known as a Fleet Admiral. They're only chosen during times of war, however.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the UNSC ranks are similar to the United States Military. Therefore, this should be pretty accurate.

O-1 : Ensign
O-2 : Lieutenant Junior Grade
O-3 : Lieutenant
O-4 : Lieutenant Commander
O-5 : Commander
O-6 : Captain
O-7 : Rear Admiral Lower Half
O-8 : Rear Admiral Upper Half
O-9 : Vice Admiral
O-10 : Admiral
O-11 : Fleet Admiral

Edit: Ah, I was too little too late.

I believe however, an army or marine commander is equal in rank to a captain. But in the Navy commander is just below Captain :).

You were going basing that on matchmaking ranks, weren't you?

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Cpt. Keyes gets promoted from Lieutenant to Commander in Cole Protocole, and from Commander to Captain in The Fall of Reach after having done the ''Keyes Loop'' maneuver and stopped the Covenant single handed until reinforcements could arrive.

"heh"

Remember his own daughter's rank is Commander. It would be easy to assume that her rank would be lower considering she had served for not as long.
