Hey, I need some help/suggestions. My xbox live service suddenly will not work. It has worked fine for the past few months and all of a sudden it says it cannot connect because it "Failed to Locate DNS Server Address". It then says to enter the info in since I guess it cant automaticly find it.

Problem #2 is that when I talked to my ISP, they told me to talk to Microsoft for help, but when I talk to them they tell me to talk to my ISP for help. It's like a ping-pong game and I'm the ball. And they don't miss!

I'm asking if anyone has had this problem and had found out what to do, since I really want to play HALO 2 on live when it comes out. Plus it cost a fortune to install everything. Rawr!

Go to your xbox live options and make sure its placed on automatic and then try connecting. If it doesn't then go back and place it to manual configuration and find out your dns server. The DNS server can be found by going to control panel and clicking on network connections. Right click on your active internet connection, or which ever one you use for xbox live. After right-clicking it you should select status. There should be 2 tabs, general and support. Go to the support tab and click on the button that says details. You should then find your dns server there.

You need to give people more information... From what you said there is no way to figure out your problem... You didn't say what your setup is if you are using just a modem or a router... and you didn't say what kind of network you are on are you trying to run a wireless network or is it all wired... this is all stuff that someone needs to know to tell you how to fix the problem... I tried you on AIM but you aren't on....

I had this problem a few times before, it always went away when i restarted my modem (i hope i say it correctly in english, what i mean with modem is the thing/box that provides you of your internet and puts a plug to your pc and xbox)
Also it always atomatically shows it wants to repair the problems if you let the xbox do it it will say, dns resolves, after a minute or so!

I had to restart my computer so I probobly was not online, (My AIM, if I made it incorrect on my profile, is Poppy Marine) Anyway, I found out where the DNS thing is but you have to manually put it into the computer. Bah!

This has been like this for at least four months now, and I'm starting to think about sending a complaint to Microsoft if they don't quit their loligaging and help me out for once.

And I'm not a techie kind of guy. I only use computers for talking with friends and homework, not much video games. So I play my xbox a lot. And alls I want to do is play on xbox live.

I need an aspirin :P

Well I use a cable modom and use a direct connection to the internet. That's about all I think I should say...other then I use Comcast.

Do this, on your computer open a command prompt.

Type: ipconfig

And you should get a screen that appears like so:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Deadbolt>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ucsc.edu
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 169.233.21.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 169.233.23.254

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

C:\Documents and Settings\Deadbolt>

The bolded default gateway is the ip you need to use for your DNS server.

If none of this works...

Turn off the Computer, Cable Modem and the XBOX. (off for at least 30 seconds.)

If you can directly connect your Cable Modem to your XBOX, do it and turn them both on.

If you still get the error, it is the Modem or the ISPs fault. (Call your internet provider)
{( it may also be the xbox! )}

If it works, turn it all off again, for another 30 seconds.

Connect the Modem to your router and to the XBOX, only. Turn them on.

If you still get the error, it is the router. (Return it to place of purchase.)

If it works, turn it all off again, for yet another 30 seconds.

Connect all of it, PC, Modem and XBOX. and turn it all on.

If it does not work now, call MS, tell them that you did this testing, and ask them to help.
The problem is coming from the computer.

BE NICE! If you p.iss off the tech he will not help you... (for free, anyway)
But, once you get it fixed, say: "Thanks, but you are a {insert string of insults here}"
for not helping you trouble shoot this simple problem.

Good luck!

You guys are doing it the hard way. I used to go through and enter everything manually, but there is an easier way if things mess up.

First is it routed?

If it is, your computer and xbox should not have access to the internet.

1: What happens sometimes, is that the signals get crossed up, so the modem and the dns are not contacting each other correctly and are sending false info back and forth. Your modem is (so long as it is on) always sending info back and forth (the two flashing lights on some modems indictate this). When it says dns not found (webpage or xbl troubleshoot) you can decide to call up your ISP and they will give you a complete new set of directories. The problem is, all computers and routers are different so they (ISP) will not help you. You can try to find out where everything is inserted by checking your manual to your router and ISP. This is the long way.

2: What I do when it happens: Leave everything on automatic, your computer and xbox. Next, shut down your computer, xbox, modem (some have buttons, but you can unplug them too), next shut down your router (same thing). Since things get corssed up and overheated, they mess up. Once you turn your router and then modem back on after a few minuntes (1/2 hour at the most) the router and the modem will signal to each other and will get the correct settings by themselves. Your computer should work automatically, if the xbox does not, go to troubleshoot, or network settings (change to automatic) and let the rest take care of itself.

If you are not routed, just turn off your modem and let it cool down for awhile. Then start it back up, and it should work. Make sure you have the right password and account set up in your netwrok settings, check your manual.

It also depends on how old your router is. I had a real poor one which went down every week or so. Spend the extra money (I have a D-link 2.4GhzWireless Broadband Router) and it will never happen again.

I use a direct connection to the internet, and I'm not spending money on a router since I'm thinking about getting a new skateboard. Well, if I have the money I will buy one seeing as I'm getting a job this summer. And they only cost...what? 70-100?
