If anything, 343i is saving him for Halo 4/5/6, or some other game.
What I think would make for a very entertaining book is a novel focusing on Jun. Could be an interesting story about how, after the events on Reach, he was pretty devastated about losing his team so he does a lot of solo/lone wolf missions, taking out Innies and such.
Could be a cool story; purely for entertainment, not canon.
Hmm, I like the concept, not a fan of the "non-canon" part.
Eh, everyone got all up in a huff over Glasslands, and I feel that is mostly due to how much new information was put into it. Too much new stuff than could seamlessly be included, perhaps. A book that is more dedicated to being an entertaining Halo novel rather than something that drudges out new Haloverse canon might fit better with the community, and be met with better reviews, IMHO.
I think it's a very good concept. Perhaps starting with Jun on some reconnaissance mission, putting him in an atmosphere where he's alone with his thoughts. Reads like a stream of consciousness, blending what is happening in front of him and relating that to the past. Sets the stage for flashback chapters through the first quarter of the book covering all the information between Reach and whenever this book would be taking place.
It would then have to be seamlessly transitioned into fast paced action, maybe capture and escape, a slight twist... all that writing crap I never have to use in an engineering career.
Of course, just my take. Don't get me wrong, I love learning about new things in the Halo verse, but you can only do that so much without getting to the point where you are prostituting the Halo concept.
Edit: And by avoid canon, I don't mean ignore Halo canon set prior. Of course that would all be followed. I meant that the book should perhaps avoid trying to establish new canon and not try to uncover more secrets of the Forerunner or what have you, but instead operate solely in the universe that has already been established.
