We need a new name for this new genre...Overkill?
How is it "Overkill"? My idea is on the same level your idea is... Sort of hypocritical to call mine "Overkill".

I was making a joke name for the new genre. I was NOT saying your idea was overkill. Apologies for the confusion mate.

I do not think it will be another fps.

If by chance it is, it will need something really unique to make it stand out in a genre that has (in my opinion) gone quite stale.

I try not to get hyped up, halo made fps dominate this gen of console. That was one of the reasons it made such an impact. It took a genre that was traditionally a PC genre and put it on console's and it worked. They had a huge community following from this. Its the reason core pc gamers still throw their noses up at console owners with the attitude "we've been doing this for years".

I believe bungie will now employ a similar tactic and bring the MMO genre to consoles and across the consoles themselves. That's what i think will happen.

Think about it,
-66 million xbox live owners
-60 million ps network users.

At this point in time, World of Warcraft only has 12 million subscribers. This number is based on a recent IGN article, and it apparently falling.

With the exception of the DCU:online, FF online and planetscape there really isnt any MMO's out there for consoles.

This is where the great ones at bungie will probably be turning their eye.

Cross-Platform multiplayer games are always a good idea, but I don't really think Microsoft and Sony would ever come to terms with the idea. I vaguely remember some other game that was supposed to get a console port from PC and they wanted to do cross-platform multiplayer too, but it never happened (that I'm aware of).

  • 01.27.2012 9:01 PM PDT

The game your thinking about is DCU

Sony may have let microsoft use blu-ray in their next console if the latest 720 rumors are to be believed.

Cross Platforming is probably going to happen, there is a market their for people who are xbox/playstation purists.

All those youtube comment section arguments may actually be resolved through online competition. Now there's a thought.

I think being against it is only hurting the developers themselves. There's a large amount of money to be had there.

Think how WoW has The Alliance vs the Horde. Yeah, this could be the next big thing. Whatever the next big thing is, it has to be something BIG something UNTHINKABLE and something that will hype up the next generation... cause c'mon lets face it. Whenever the mention of next gen pops up during half way though the console life cycle we all get that VR idea in our head dont we hahaha.

But seriously, if this idea is the way things are going. Then who better to build the game that will be this epic next best thing?

Probably the people that took Microsoft's first console and sling shot it to the head of the pack?

Probably Bungie.

The thing is it's not up to Sony or Microsoft. The game developer chooses what they develop. Bungie/Activision have the resources and know-how to deliver a cross platform multi-player game.

I am guessing they're looking to have an always on game universe you can interact with in different ways. For example first release is a PS3 & xbox360 cross platform game where the next release is the mobile game/interface.

There is also the Bungie website to interact with the universe etc as well.

You can already see XBL parties, chat, fileshare, Bungie pro and so much more that Bungie has huge experience and integration skills with.

If it is not an FPS it had better be third person MMO stlye or more like Max Payne 3 third person etc. I just don't play other genres that much, once or twice through and not again. FPS/Third person multiplayer is simply so dynamic compared to other games. Games like Starcraft just get stale, for me that is.

Further in terms what can fit on screen and be a persistent universe while you play online or multiplayer I don't see another genre besides FPS or third person that can deliver this.

Imagine a Diablo or Starcraft or platformer interface...no other genre has the ability to participate in such a large universe or game world.

-EDIT
The other thing is if you look at Bungie's history of games they're almost all FPS based. This is a good sign for FPS/MMO/RPG.

1. Pathways into darkness.
2. Marathon.
3. Oni
4. Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach.

Even Myth is MMO style. Plus the original Halo concept was third person. Further there was a scrapped Halo MMO concept too.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

All we know is that it's not simply an MMO and it involves stars, lots and lots of stars.

Best guess, Bungie invents a brand new genre of games.

Seems to me they're going to take the best of each genre to make a hybrid. The last scene in the O Brave New World ViDoc shows the land at a single person scale, then pulls back to the landscape, shows dynamic lighting and pulls right out of the atmosphere and heads to the stars.

Taking the in game of Reach from FPS to space battles and juxtapositioning to their new IP I'm thinking the open world and in game universe is about to become a great deal bigger.

After all what is bigger than Halo? Single universe, on planet (FPS/RPG), off planet (RTS/MMO), user generated content and cross platform interaction (subscription/micro transaction)...that's what.

We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had.

I feel like from the scale SJ has made the game is already huge, the question really is what will be effected really by players and will there be constant updates new objectives.

Mainly Bungie employees commanding and you playing the way you want to. Checkpoints given and if you are in a base you can take a tranport to the battlefield fast, or if you are not interested in that go out on your own and scan scout and spy.

We know it is an open world and i am expecting a vibrant open world where things keep changing, where your victory one place does not necessarily mean it will effect something else.

Some thing like to a.i's playing a game of chess and your are just a little soldier in the middle of it fighting for one of the a.i's. You may win one victory but the oponent can win 2 times as many.

Supplies will also be important, as transportation shall be used in large cause. Meaning if the enemy can supply their soldiers then they are likely to be more successfull. Or if you win a battle and let them retreat they may use those equipment to attack you again and defeat your side from another vantage point.

Mainly two Starcraft 2 players fighting against each other and you are just one soldier in it.

Also made this as a place for anyone who wants to do research on the game

My thoughts exactly! I really fell in love with the sci-fi/future realism setting with Halo and I know if they can create a whole new universe in that genre, Tiger/Destiny will succeed greatly.

Hopefully they stuck to that genre. Personally I don't play any of the below games simply because I don't like the genre and art-style etc -

1. Bioshock
2. Rage
3. Borderlands
4. Red Dead Redemption

You get the idea.

I liked RDR but just for single player. Im with you on Bioshock and Rage...those were garbage. Havent played Borderlands.

Also, what is an MMO? Thanks.

All good points, where does the supply lines information come from?

Also feel free to link my post in your Destiny thread/repository.

Bungie have my following enough to follow the lead up to their new game, I'll check it out just from the small details we have now.

Bungie have certainly earned their respect with the Halo franchise.

What do want clarified?

- The short version -
Multi-platform (xbox & PS3, maybe PC), mutli-device (iPad, mobile phones), open world, combination First Person Shooter (FPS) & Role Playing Game (RPG) with possible Real Time Strategy (RTS) elements as well.

There will also be a micro-transaction or subscription based economy for players to upgrade, sell or trade goods and of course website integration to keep you coming back. This will take place in a single universe where all player actions, games and data are in real time to all other players.

I also speculate this game engine will either be for the next generation or already support the current consoles and run on the next generation in the same game release.

Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO).

Some MMO games for your reference -

1. World of Warcraft
2. Star Wars: The Old Republic
3. Guild Wars 2
4. Lord of the Rings Online
5. Age of Conan: Unchained
6. Aion
7. EVE Online (soon to combine with Dust514 on PS3 & PC)

Oddley I like your speculation. It's very thought out and plausible. I like the idea, but I just wish Bungie would give us something more to look at, but then again it is Bungie and they know what they're doing...I hope. I think a more online multiplayer focus is a great idea though. I mean how many people actually crack open the game and play the online multiplayer right off the bat, then go play the story mode when they get bored. Online multiplayer and interaction has more of a playability factor and when you mix the online world with the story mode universe, you've created the single most successful MMOFPSRPG ever. lol

I agree very much so. Only problem would be for the players (very few players, but still consumers)that don't have online access. Possibly they would only be allowed a standard RPG with the same beginning basis as the online world?

Anyways... yes that would be neat.

Dude, think about what you're saying. Your comparison is highly flawed, you're comparing a game that has been OFFICIALLY announced to a game that hasn't, and expecting that they both share a wealth of information to their respective fans about the upcoming game. Halo 4 has been officially announced, so of course 343i is going to "advertise" their game with a -blam!-load of awesome information. Bungie's new game on the other hand, hasn't been officially announced, all that's been said basically is that they're working on a new series, nicknamed "Destiny", and some genre elements. We don't have a legitimate title, don't have a trailer, there's nothing. Don't expect any juicy information until an announcement is made. Bungie isn't going to shower us with knowledge about this game if it hasn't even been announced yet. Think before you type, bro.

I'm surprised Bungie.net is full of Halo chatter and little to do with speculation on their new game IP.

What's with that?

We haven't gotten any teases from Bungie. We're getting craploads of teases from 343i about Halo 4. Hell, they're even releasing concept art this month! What has Bungie given us? Some text.

I think in this day and age developers can simply choose to make a game only playable online. From a sales perspective the developer/publisher is not missing out on a large chunk of revenue.

Look at World of Warcraft (WOW) where players have to be online, same as most MMO games.
