Subject: Why is everyone in love with Eric Nylund?

“We are the Mirratord. We strike with speed and stealth. Our enemies will not see their deaths. They will not know their fate. In darkness, we will see light. In light, we will see darkness. No matter the location, we will see victory. If we fail, no one will know. Like a ghost, our presence is a mystery. For the honor of the mirratord" join the Mirratord

I've read all of his Halo novels and there not really that special in fact I'd call them pretty mediocre and most of the time it feels very cliche and half hearted.

I think most here would agree that his Halo novels are pretty average. They give nice exposition on the Halo universe but if it wasn't for that I wouldn't touch them. That's why I haven't read anything original of his.

The only ones I really liked were Contact: Harvest and The Cole protocol

They're even worse. The only good Halo novels are the some of the ones that have been published since 343i assumed the mantle.

He is by far the best Halo writer.

I do agree here. Initially I really liked Fall of Reach but later I came to realize that I just really liked the Halo Universe and the writing style as, at best, rudimentary. But to be honest this can be said for all of them.

Signatures are for squares.

Nylund has been consistently good. Even if his works aren't excellent, they are never bad. He's also had more involvement with Halo than any other author, and he practically built all of the original extended media himself.

That's true; as a story-teller he's competent, it's just his writing that's lacking. Although, I did find The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole a fantastic read, so perhaps he just dumbed down his writings with his earlier books or has improved since The Fall of Reach.

Whilst I'm not that big on The Cole Protocol, I felt that Contact Harvest was a pretty good character-driven novel, I couldn't really fault it (except for... that scene). I certainly felt more attached to Lighter Than Some & Dadab and Sif & Mack than I did most of Nylund's characters.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Because...just look at 'em.

In all seriousness, it's simple...His books were good.

Contact Harvest was good.
The Cole protocol was not.

I don't understand why anyone is bringing up Contact Harvest and The Cole Protocol; neither were written by Nylund.

First Strike was my favorite.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Well, Nylund has had the time to develop his characters in the Halo novels he made and get the story down pretty well. I think he should've written Glasslands, the Dyson Sphere and those inside where things he dealt with.

IMO, Karen could have written something about the Assembly AIs exploring and developing the things that they got up to. I think she'd be better at that than what she did with [Gl]asslands.

I think Nylund's work is average. He doesn't blow me away but it has some good moments that make them worthwhile. My favorite book would have to be Contact Harvest.

I agree with Seal.

I prefer Nylund to any other Halo author thus far.

My reasons:

1. Clean simple writing that creates imaginative images in your own mind. See I rate a book at how much I forget I'm reading and just start to vividly see the book content. I simply don't get this with many other Halo authors (particularly Greg Bear).

2. The expansions to the universe and characters are relevant and precise with solid mystery and delivery on finding things out.

3. Nylund's Fall of Reach kicks arse of the game story of Halo Reach.

4. Ghosts of Onyx was brilliant. Too bad they didn't get Nylund back to finish what he started. Glasslands sux.

The legendary ending for Halo 4 is Masturcheef and Arby making love.

Because he's a damn good writer. Contact Harvest and The Fall of Reach was amazing.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

I'm not in love with him. I just think that First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx are awesome.

I honestly thought the Fall of Reach was extremely unrealistic, in other words, not how I'd imagine military being like in the future, but then again, it is unrealistic in and of itself for them to still be using projectile firearms 500 years in the future, we're already working on antimatter technology as of now.

  • 01.16.2012 5:55 PM PDT

The reason for that is for hundreds of years, we spent our time colonizing planets, not focused on killing each other or anything. I admit they could have something a bit better than that but oh well, its what they have.

  • 01.16.2012 5:57 PM PDT

I just get the sneaking feeling we're going to be where Halo is in under a century, if not less. By 2552 we'll most likely have colonized and uncovered every square inch of the Galaxy - look at how much our technology has come since WWII, about 70 years. In another 70 years we'll probably be at the interplanetary stage of our development.
