Subject: A Sad Noticing Of What Users Do

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

After looking around and posting, I made a realization. When people post on Bungie.net, they express their opinion on an issue or whatever they sees in need of discussing. Most of these topics will be discarded and forgotten soon with only five or so posts. These threads are usually well written and thought out. But they are also alongside rubbish threads.

And it is only when the topic reaches a certain paragraph that this event occurs. This event is very saddening, and bitter. The event where people just stop paying attention to the thread and just decide to skim the thread and make a post on what they think the thread is discussing. OR, they will just read the title and post what they think the thread is about.

Most of you will disagree with me, but my point still stands. Most of the users here could care less on long posts and just skim them and post what they think it is about. Stop it. Please. You kill the thread and you should get banned for it. You're off-toppic, and I could care less about your opinion if you don't even read mine.

So that is what I find sad. People prejudging a thread just by title or just skims and misses the main point. Do any of you agree with me? That this is sad? Do you agree with what I believe should be the consequence? Please, discuss what you think about this matter.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

I see that a lot too, those people do need to be punished, but ones opinion can result in a good outcome in times.

I think it's sad you decided to make a thread about this.

Also, it's sad that I replied to said thread.

Funny, I just read an article on this exact topic.

You know what though, it's not just Bungie.net, it's the internet. This has been a growing phenomenon for a few years now. We live in a fast paced world. We want content and we want it now. We don't want to read all the mushy gushy inside material that no one will remember a week from now.

Would you rather watch the news and get stories on straight facts? Or maybe a little background of how a situation started? I think that's a personal choice and nothing is wrong with that. Whatever is chosen isn't right or wrong, but there is definitely a pattern in how people read posts online.

hella frreal

I kind of zoned out for a minute there, but we were talking about pizza recipes, right?

Does anyone know where I can order some imported ground oregano?

Interesting article, I'll read it in the morning. The thing about writing which is different then the news is that it is used as pleasure, usually not always information. (Well for this site anyways)
So in my opinion, users should take time and read what would be for pleasure or discussion on a subject. The News is russhed so that we can get going on our busy lives as well, which is most likely not the case for you being on this site. No offence, but people are here to relax from working.

OP is butthurt.

Anyway, Pizza, yeah, I think a lot of people are TL;DR guys. I'm sure I'll start writing longer responses and such once I stop being lazy and childish. I always read threads like that, but my replies are often brief and nonsensical, assuming they are on-topic at all.

It's not good for discussion and makes the user look really silly at times, but I'd rather have it than nothing. Don't forget that some users just take a long time to write out their response -as I probably just made an example of myself when I left to do something else- and that sometimes a thread just gets too big too quickly for a user to follow.

But I thought it was a pretty common courtesy to read the original post and the last 25 posts at least. I think it's the best way to keep up with discussion without having to read every post in a large thread.

By the way, the subject (or title) is supposed to relate to the discussion at hand and the original post should relate to the discussion's content in further detail.

Then how can you realistically expect people to read the long posts you're referring to?

This website isnt a popularity contest. This is the internet after all. You post on here knowing full well that your opinion can be completely ignored and forgotten about within five minutes, regardless of how well written of a post it is.

I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I wouldn't realistically expect people to read such posts. However I also find it sad that threads like these and even just replies are not given the attention they deserve. It is equally as sad that for a large number of people nowadays reading is a 'chore' to them and not something that is enjoying.

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

I always try to read through the OP, no matter how many posts it takes up.

Whether I actually understand it is another story, however.

  • 01.16.2012 11:09 PM PDT

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

It seems that people always skip what i write in my threads. In one case a few people only read the first two words of the OP and then posted accordingly.

It's unfortunate, but it's not going to change.

This world wants to drag you down... And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around your neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.

I notice this in the Flood often.

A copy pasta thread about girl issues = 10 page hot topic

Well thought out OP on certain worldissue/interestingthing = 2 or 3 page topic, maybe.

Tej~

I don't think it's fair to punish people for not reading long paragraphs of debates in their spare time.

yeah this reminds me of the time i got sent to jail for stealing crocs from target becozs i wanted all of the colors because i only got the green wons for my birthday and i wanted more ;)

I only do that when the OP looks unnecessarily long. For example: this thread. Even though I read all of it (this time), it didn't need to be four paragraphs long. Especially since this topic is basically, "I hate it when people don't read the full post and then post their own opinion after reading the title and/or one or two sentences." The last paragraph alone is pretty much all anyone needed to read (in this thread, atleast).

Most of the users here could care less ...
Stopped reading there. It's "couldn't".

But seriously now: opinions are vastly important for perspective. What more people need to do is back up their opinions with valid research, statistical bar-graphs, pie-charts and Excel sheets. We need solid numbers that are validated by world-renowned scientists and leading professionals. You must also have a Masters Degree in Psychology and Sociology.

Only then will people maybe not glance over your well-written thesis in their 5-minutes-of-boredom they spend browsing these forums.

Also maybe learn to be a bit more concise with your points. [/selfslap]

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

Do you read through nine pages of posts to find out where the conversation is? I guess you have never posted in the Titles/Prefixes thread. It would take years to get caught up with that one.

and I could care less about your opinion if you don't even read mine.

Read the entire post and don't really have an opinion on it. Most times I'll add a tl;dr read at the bottom of my threads so that the people who want the details can have them, and the people that just want to skim over can too.

In an off topic comment, your sentence above is just wrong. Think about what you're trying to write before actually typing it.

"I could care less" implies that you already care.
"I couldn't care less" implies that you couldn't care any less even if you tried.

I don't see how people get those mixed up.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

If the post stretches on for more than a browser's window height then it better be extremely well written. I don't read long boring posts. It's the internet, be brief. If you can't convey your point in less than 5 paragraphs then you don't really know what you want discussed.

Even the long theory threads bring up their main point early on in the post and then perpetuate it with well written detail, and I'll read those threads. However, I will not read some 12 paragraph spiel that skips from one point to another. I can read full books in almost a day, but I can't read more than 15 pages at once if a text is boring.

You kill the thread and you should get banned for it.
I don't understand. Are you saying that if a user were to neglect replying to a thread, than they should deserve to be banned? If so, then you might as well just ban nearly everyone on this forum, which is a little drastic.
Think of the problem you're trying to fix here. Are you implying there's an issue with people not posting enough? What would you impose we do? Tell people they must post to a new thread or they'll be banned?

How could we possibly have that authority?

You missed the idea of that post, he is saying that people that post things that they think is what based off of the title of the thread is basically a part of spam or a useless post, and that is causing threads to died*

Not people that make threads but the people that tend to post in that thread.

You sort of proved of what he is explaining...
