Subject: A Sad Noticing Of What Users Do

I made a realization. When people post on Bungie.net, they express their opinion on an issue or whatever they sees in need of discussing.

???

This is a forum... on the intenet... need I say more?

Most of these topics will be discarded and forgotten soon with only five or so posts. These threads are usually well written and thought out. But they are also alongside rubbish threads.

I tend to see the opposite occur. Well thought out posts usually receive a fair amount of respondents with beneficial discussion, but it's all dependent on how an OP writes the initial post. It's context cannot really have a majority of ambiguity, it shouldn't be looping around in circles, and it should be at it's concisest point; where the topic of the OP can be understood (as more doesn't mean better).

The above factors can contribute to incorrect responses which seem oblivious to the precise topic (as what can be understood and well written is subjective); and not solely "skimming". Sure, some users may be unmotivated to read large amounts of text and simply reply in a nonsensical way, but I don't think this is the sole reason at hand. Remember, you are dealing with a broad range of social people on this site, and not all may see the clear picture of an OP when compared to someone else.

It 'seems' but that's not how it is. There are people that always want to listen to your part and what you have to say, and there are those that just want your attention. This thread sort of plays both roles; Needs your attention and opinion.

Long posts are fine. Unnecessarily long posts are, well, unnecessarily long.

Recon's posts are pretty good examples of long posts that are worth reading all of. But, if what you are saying can be said with fewer words, why not do so?

Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

You missed the idea of that post, he is saying that people that post things that they think is what based off of the title of the thread is basically a part of spam or a useless post, and that is causing threads to died*

Not people that make threads but the people that tend to post in that thread.

You sort of proved of what he is explaining...

You kill the thread and you should get banned for it.
I don't understand. Are you saying that if a user were to neglect replying to a thread, than they should deserve to be banned? If so, then you might as well just ban nearly everyone on this forum, which is a little drastic.
Think of the problem you're trying to fix here. Are you implying there's an issue with people not posting enough? What would you impose we do? Tell people they must post to a new thread or they'll be banned?

How could we possibly have that authority?
Ah, okay. Thanks for explaining.

Most long reads are for explanatory reasons, and that is what he has posted, an explanation of what happens to those well thought out posts/threads.

You missed the point.

I'm saying there is often a difference between the level of detail an OP thinks is necessary and the level of detail everyone else thinks is necessary.

As an example, take the case where someone posts a TL;DR... Why didn't you just post that to begin with? You've acknowledged that's the only point in your post that you expect people to care about... So, why did you bother typing out the rest of it?

I understand. And you make a very good valid point. But, I am come to guess that people that write these TL;DR threads, often want to show that they have writing skills or some kind of recognition. And they write the TL;DR for people that have literature issues, lol, that don't want to take the time and read through the fine print posted.

That's my point...

These forums are not some poet's corner where people should be coming to show off their writing abilities. They are a place for discussion. So, you shouldn't really be insulted if people skim over your long, drawn-out essay, when that's not what they come here for. If that's what you come here for, you've come to the wrong place.

Just like you'd get bored of talking to a person who goes on and on without saying anything, so do people when they are faced with a wall of text on a forum that doesn't really say anything. It's not just about how many fancy words you can use. The ability to be concise is one of the most important skills when communicating.

Completely this.

If I see a long op I'll start to read the first few sentences, but if you haven't made or gotten to any point that I care about you've lost my attention and I'm either gone or I'm off to the next couple of posts for the paraphrase of what was being said. Very often I can get the jist of what the op was trying to say, but just waited too long to, or over explained it. Sometimes these posts are merely conjecture, and I have to read a couple to get a bearing.

Point: Don't make novel posts that though you may think are 'great' for you likely have lost the majority of anyone who may have posted because of sheer apathy and boredom.

Point of point: Get to the point already!!!!

If the TL;DR is about discussion than it is fine, but what like I said before about the writing skill, that is not good and I probably shouldn't have said that. But in another point if the thread has discussion and that clearly points that it has value, and most long written posts are well written value.

I hope I am making sense... TiredFace.jpg

In a previous post a user was stating they wished bungie.net was a democratic bungie.net. This topic is a prime example of that definition. You, the community, have the free will and privilege of choosing whether or not to further a topics "life" by discussing it regardless of it's worth.

Most of you will disagree with me, but my point still stands. Most of the users here could care less on long posts and just skim them and post what they think it is about. Stop it. Please. You kill the thread and you should get banned for it. You're off-toppic, and I could care less about your opinion if you don't even read mine.
I completely agree that people should be banned for posting off-topic because they only read the title of the thread. I don't understand how people expect their post to encourage discussion when they didn't even read the thread themselves.
