Subject: A Sad Noticing Of What Users Do

Posted by: Mr AwesomePizza
After looking around and posting, I made a realization. When people post on Bungie.net, they express their opinion on an issue or whatever they sees in need of discussing. Most of these topics will be discarded and forgotten soon with only five or so posts. These threads are usually well written and thought out. But they are also alongside rubbish threads.

And it is only when the topic reaches a certain paragraph that this event occurs. This event is very saddening, and bitter. The event where people just stop paying attention to the thread and just decide to skim the thread and make a post on what they think the thread is discussing. OR, they will just read the title and post what they think the thread is about.

Most of you will disagree with me, but my point still stands. Most of the users here could care less on long posts and just skim them and post what they think it is about. Stop it. Please. You kill the thread and you should get banned for it. You're off-toppic, and I could care less about your opinion if you don't even read mine.

So that is what I find sad. People prejudging a thread just by title or just skims and misses the main point. Do any of you agree with me? That this is sad? Do you agree with what I believe should be the consequence? Please, discuss what you think about this matter.

I really hate this, but I don't think it's worth punishing people for.

Known by some, but not by all.
Soffish: Do not eat!

That is a very good point and people will do what they are free to do. Some will skim and some will read.

No offence, but people are here to relax from working.
Then how can you realistically expect people to read the long posts you're referring to?

I'll keep this short: it's the poster's responsibility to insure that their post is worth reading. Pretty obvious, isn't it? It's not the fault of the reader if you dragged on for too long, made a distracting error, or committed one of a variety of other mistakes that would result in the loss of their attention.

It's your problem, not theirs. Know your audience. If you have no regard for who's reading your post, you don't have much room to be angry if it misses its mark.

It's your fault.
So it's my fault that people are lazy? No. It's not my fault. If a user does not like the thread, or is too important to read it, it's their fault if they post in it. Not mine. If you don't like a thread or cant understand, why the hell would you post and blame it on the OP that your post makes no sense?

I think Primo may be referring to the threads that go forgotten and if that is the case I agree. I also agree with your OP however, I find it annoying when I see a thread being spammed causing other threads to be overlooked. The thing about Primo's point (if I am correct in what he means) is that it is up to the creator of a thread to make their thread appealing. If the viewers of a thread find that thread worth discussing then they will or should post in it, you do not know how many people are viewing your thread.

And that brings me to another idea: Why can we not see how many views a thread has had on Bungie.net? I'm sure that's something that has been discussed before though.

EDIT: Or maybe that's not what Primo meant.

Is it that the reader is lazy, or that your thread didn't deserve their undivided attention?

Why don't you post an example? The way you're going on about this, surely it's happened to you. You're obviously mad....bro. If you don't like a thread or cant understand, why the hell would you post and blame it on the OP that your post makes no sense?Keep in mind that, in the instance of the reader not understanding the content of a post, it isn't always the reader's fault. Maybe they posted in a fashion that seemed off topic because the OP was worded poorly, or confusing. On the flip side, maybe their post makes perfect sense, and you're the one who can't comprehend.

My point: stop dumping on the reader, it isn't always their fault.

As the author, it's your responsibility and yours alone to make sure that your original post is worth reading. If you don't, then you really don't have a basis to complain.

I've seen numerous threads with lengthy OPs that get the attention that they deserve. A more recent example would be this thread here.

If a lot people are skipping your 'long, well thought out threads', well then you should maybe have a look at the thread itself, not the people. Believe it or not, most don't care about your opinion if you're just rambling on for 1000s of words (Exaggeration).

Not to mention this website is full of 13-17 year olds.

I had another point to make, but I've forgotten.

It wasn't that long to begin with though was it? Some OPs grow with the popularity they get (Commander Santa kept on adding more information to the OP as interest grew.) Maybe that's the way to do it? Start a thread with a smaller OP and add to it if people do want to discuss it.

No, that's what I meant. My post before this was strictly in response to the OP's concerns toward off-topic posts.

The one you quoted was pertaining to threads that end up being ignored, although it applies to just about anything one posts here.

Posted by: Primo84This has happened to me, yes. But I notice it all the time in other threads as well. And yes sometimes an OP can be misleading. But if a user honestly does not understand a post, or does not know what the subject is, why post? Why not just ask what the OP meant? That is the whole point of this thread. Also, I'm sorry if my last post sounded angry. I wasn't, I was just annoyed a little at the moment.

I suppose it depends on the forum. In the Flood, I would not expect much better, although since the forum is so populated, even "lengthy" threads get a decent amount of replies and they can be constructive if the OP is.

On the Universe forum, you face crucifixion for not articulating your points thoughtfully, reading threads carefully, and providing source material appropriately; this is just a consequence - for better or worse - of the type of people who are on that forum (i.e., book readers).

Actually most of the Flood reads the whole thread from what I experience, it's mostly THIS forum that has this problem.

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

That hasn't been my experience at all (at least when we are talking about long threads).

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

I think everything is going too fast. People are trying to have Doctorates degrees by age 30 these days.

I know too many people who went to college immediately after high school, despite having no idea what they're really interested in doing for the rest of their lives.

Around half of them are in Nursing just because that was the most successful industry when they started college. Around none of theme expressed any interest in health care when they were in high school.

I don't make topics unless I have a lot to say about something, and the more I have to say, the less likely people are to actually engage, and the more likely the topic is to just float into oblivion.
