Subject: 'Thanking' Users/Members on their profile

Okay, so I was browsing other forums trying to find something out and I noticed that a lot of website forums now have a 'Thanked' section on their profile or under their avatar. Here is an example.

I can't remember if this has been discussed before but would you like this as an added feature to the site?

I think it would be a great idea. Just another thing to add to the list I suppose though.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I'm not seeing any "Thanked" thingamabobs on that site. Someone MS Paint it for me.

If there was no point of it then other sites wouldn't have it either? Although Bungie's forums are for discussing games people ask questions all the time, it'd just be a nice little add on or perk.

yeah this reminds me of the time i got sent to jail for stealing crocs from target becozs i wanted all of the colors because i only got the green wons for my birthday and i wanted more ;)

This is one of the few things I don't hate about the waypoint forums.

I just think it's basically saying how many times you've liked a post, and how many times your posts have been liked.

I don't care for the idea.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I've always liked the idea - if only to show whose word should be taken seriously when requesting help.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Nope, I wouldn't want that on bungie.net. It would become a pissing contest for the community.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

That would be an okay feature to have. So, we thank people for the help and info that they have given us...

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Oh man... itd be crazy if we could thank people at the click of a button.

Nah, I mean it's a good idea and all but other than the person being thanked nobody is going to care. I'm sure not to many people stalk profiles let alone check signatures and I guarantee that someone looking at a profile is going to think "Man, look at all these thank you letters! What a kind and gentle person he/she must be!"

The only additional feature I would love to see on this site is a way to stay in contact with your buddies here, such as a "befriend" feature. Then again, I am not too worried about it either.

But why? If I get X number of thanks, does something happen? I guess I don't see the reasoning behind it on a site largely occupied by kids and teens. I believe 343 forums have it, and someone who says "ARs Suck" gets a bunch of likes (or thanks...whatever they are called) while someone who posts a detailed explanation helping someone open a NAT gets maybe a couple. Seems to encourage spamming opinions that cater to the lowest common denominator to increase your "thank" count. I can't see any real positive result from it. All I see happening would be encouraging people to troll for them, and they would become another annoying source of self-congratulatory posts like K/D in the Halo forums or member titles in the community forum.

We already have enough stupid and pointless ways to judge each other here. We can brag about K/Ds that can easily be boosted, and get a sense of superiority from a member title that isn't based on the quality of our posts. Why add another metric that will likely only be indicative of spamming ability?

Showing total thanks is stupid. People are biased.

I do like the idea of being able to "Like" someones post though.

Um????? TOP TOPICS?!!!?? Save threads you like please.

This is the response I was given a while back, but it didn't really cover individual posts or users, so essentially *shrug*

Good discussion in there though, I like bringing this thread up any chance I get.

+Thanks

But seriously, I don't see a point in it either. It's just something else with an arbitrary value just like the title system. The only value it holds is what the individual viewing it perceives it to be. Not to mention the bias nature of people will lead to the example outlined above as well as the level of stupidity found on the internet, especially on internet forums render such things little more than a pissing contest.

A "thank" option may help to decrease spam. Currently, if a member posts something that other members agree with, whether they find it amusing, or believe it adequately answers the thread's question, it is often followed by a series of replies simply quoting the reply, and possibly adding "this." Instead, members could be able to "thank" someone for their post, to demonstrate their support for the post, without hindering further discussion.

Thanks can also show members that others appreciate their posts, encouraging members to be helpful and behave well by providing positive reinforcement, and can allow other members to easily see the most useful/agreeable posts in a thread.

However, I'm not entirely decided on the matter. While they could provide positive feedback, the system would also be open to manipulation. It may end up encouraging bad behaviour, with members being rewarded for creating alternate accounts to attempt to boost their account and threads.

RIP Logan ~B.B.

We had the "Good Post" option over on Halocharts. Worked exactly the same as thanking does on other sites. What did the "Good Post" system accomplish?

a. Some users posting constantly to keep their count high
b. Users making alt accounts to vote their main up
c. Users always "GPing" their friends, turning it into a popularity contest. This included people trolling as well.
d. Users copying threads that scored the OP a lot of GPs.
e. People bragging and arguing about their GP scores
f. People constantly asking for GPs, or offering quid pro quo

It seemed to drive a few people to really be motivated to participate and make good posts, but it mostly led to arguing. People fought over who was boosting GPs, troll groups tried to put themselves as the top scorers by all voting everything each other said up, and the biggest problem became constant copycat threads. Any post that scored well got copied relentlessly. Halocharts also had special member statuses (very much like member titles here), that were eventually scrapped because of all the bickering over them.

It just seems like special statuses and the Halo community don't mix well. Community is to driven by the size of their epeens, and will do just about anything to make theirs look bigger than the next guys.

It's fine with me, but unneeded.

Okay, after reading through the posts I think maybe this feature wouldn't fit in to well with bungie.net. Sure there are positives about it but it seems the negitives outweigh the positives.
