Cortana says she knows "you", your past, your future."
She goes on to say, "This is the way the world ends."

Conclusion:
This is a -vision- of the future, the end of the world, that will be given during the first part of Halo 3 and MCs job is to change this possible future world.

Further confirmation: in Frankie's update, he italicizes "This" in the final line of Cortana's words, emphasizing the fact that Cortana was revealing this in an emphatic way as a warning.

My opinion does not matter.

And my opinion tells you to go to hell.

umm...he also stated that the trailer is actually a cinematic taken from about a third of the way through the game

I still agree with this theory. 117 is seeing the future I think, sort of like Cortana's prophecy

Theres no way, without Forerunner magic, that thats possible.

It would be possible because if you remember h2s ending grave mind (the plant thing) started to question her it could have led to a fusion that caused them to talk to the cheif from a galexy away.

Yeah it´s kinda dreamlike the way MC suddenly appears through the blowing dust.

Although I'm sceptic toward this beeing Cortanas doings...
I just can't help thinking about Gravemind.
First of all, when cortanas vioce is distorted in the beginning of the trailer it sounds alot like him (it). Furthermore the ending of H2 when Gravemind says "Silence fills the empty grave, now that I have gone. But my mind is not at rest, for questions linger one. Now I will ask, and you will answer" it's possibly a link to what is happening in the trailer. By him saying this it's obvious that be wants to spill his guts, to who you might ask? I think he is using Cortana to comunicate with MC. And this is what we are listening to in the trailer.
When MC is captured by Gravemind in H2 he says something that might help elaborate my theory: "This one is machine and nerve and has its mind concluded." Gravemind feels that he needs to enlighten MC by showing him the future...

This actually forces us to speculate on what Graveminds role really is? If he implies that MC has his mind concluded and that Arbiter "is but flesh and faith, and is the more deluded" then none of the perpectives wich we have encountered in the past games are true! Neither the great journey NOR the fact that the activation of the rings must be stopped at all costs...
Therefore Gravemind holds the key to everything, in the press release CJ Cowan says "'that our assumptions about the Halo universe are being challenged this late in the story is what I am personally most excited about leaving with our fans." What can be more challanging than to evade the commitment to saving the universe? What if the world must end to make possible a new beginning?

It´s here the Ark comes into the picture. An most importantly the essence of the Floods existence! We are all assuming that he Flood is an uncontrolled outbreak but maybe, if we want to continue the biblical references, the Flood is simply the cure for all our sins... When we encounter Gravemind in the level with the same name in H2, Gravemind says : "I? I am a monument to all your sins". Ergo, The Flood is an elaborate "cure" that shall swell through the spaces of the universe and infect all that comes in its way, then the the Ark shall be populated by those who are meant to initiate the new beginning... I recall that someone wondered why the ark would be in Africa... Why is it not obvious? It's the breeding grounds of humanity. THIS is how the world BEGINS...;)

great idea that would make sense for this to be a "false ending" to throw all the speculations in the wrong direction- Bungie's Speciality
it would make sense for cortana/gravemind to show chief what will happen if he fails

i think that helmer ve's idea is really intersting and clever and i also agree with the whole idea of him seeing the future because at the end of the trailer, while all the covenant ships try to get away from the ark, the cheif just stands and watches

From the first of the Cortana letter;

"I have walked the edge of the Abyss.
I have governed the unwilling.
I have witnessed countless empires break before me.
I have seen the most courageous soldiers fall away in fear.
[I was there with the Angel at the tomb]

I have seen your future.
And I have learned.

There will be no more Sadness. No more Anger. No more Envy.

I HAVE WON.

Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends."

Even this seems more coherent with Gravemind than with Cortana if you ask me

i agree that he is having a vision of the future and i also think that the structure is actualy the arc being fired to activate the other rings and the mc must stop them at all costs
