Subject: Cries for Help / Attention

How are we, the community, expected to respond to siauations like this?

They may not always be real causes for concern, but this one seems legit.

Does Bungie have any sort of responsibility in this kind of circumstance? Is there anyone here who's properly equipped to help?

By the time said person gets to them, the community will have done enough damage through trolling and flaming.

Indeed. Even if a situation like that is real, I'm sure that we wouldn't be able to do a lot about it anyway.

Exactly. So the proper course of action would be a mod to lock the thread as soon as possible and send a friendly PM with links to places that can help (like suicide helplines and whatnot).

And whats bungie going to do? Bungie is a game company not a community support service. I expect theres loads of threads like that all day everyday on bungie and accross the web. If they were all reported and looked in to i'd guess over 3 quarters of them would be fake. Its the internet, its full of lies and cons.

Edit: I know I may come accross harsh and sure i'd feel bad for not doing anything but is it for real? I doubt it.

Well, thats my opinion anyway.

Exactly. In situations like these, you never know when someone is serious or seeking attention. It is not our place to decide. We will be happy to link them to some areas of assistance, but it should not be a topic of conversation here.

If you are going to respond do so only to direct them to a suicide helpline. I'm going to comb through the two threads you linked and ban anyone that was acting like an ass. I don't care that the OP was trolling; suicide is a zero tolerance issue.

If you ever see a suicide thread, contact a ninja immediately. While we're not equipped to handle those situations (who is?) we do have instructions on how to handle them.

If I see a suicide, I would call the ambulance- not a ninja.

If you mean on bungie.net, then yeah, of course.

This is exactly the answer I was looking for.

Graphics are good, gameplay sucks. Overhyped IMO.

I don't want to help you. I'm sorry. =(

Good, quality thread/discussion here. Would make a valuable sticky.

I wish the Bnet community was mature enough to handle these situations with compassion, and give the OP the benefit of the doubt. I'd say always assume that the poster is serious. If not, you fed a troll. Big whoop. If they ARE serious? You may have saved a life.

To the people saying "oh they shouldn't look for support here, this is a videogame forum.", you're right. It's not logical. But if the only place a person feels comfortably looking for support is an online videogames forum, it means that they're in a very, very dark place and they really need the support. Depression (a major cause of suicide/self-harm) is a mental illness. Having grown up with an adopted sibling with mental illnesses (such as depression), and having two family members in the mental health field, I know that "logical" is the least fitting word possible to describe mental illness. Reiterating.. Assume sincerity, people.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Everything I wish to say has already been said - it's a rather apparent assumption that suicide threads should have a zero tolerance policy. While this is the internet and in very rare cases the masses care, the majority of the time they don't - which is very unfortunate.

Suicide is a very serious thing, and should be taken so. The chance for the masses to make it worse far outweigh the chance that a ninja, or someone else kind enough to PM them, will make it worse.

Concerned users should always PM the user and report the thread. Mods should lock the thread and PM the user as well. You don't need to put in effort (unless you want to), but just let them know that there are better ways to communicate than bungie.net. If the author of the thread is really in that state of mind, I hope that they are well enough to realize they have PMs.

I think join dates and recent posts would also be telling if someone is doing it for attention or not.

I usually try to PM a ninja if I see something like that. I don't think there is a specific section in the rules about suicide threads, but I would image that the webteam takes discussion like that very seriously.

Not something to joke about IMO.

Which ninja do you contact? Who will be online?

Report the thread too. That shows up in all ninjas' queues.

^This. It is nice to know that Bungie does care enough to direct individuals to assistance if needed, and that they have protocols to follow when such incidents arise. It shows very good responsibility and compassion for their community of game players.

My hats off to you Bungie.

Are they simply not trolling?

I don't know about you, but if I was going to kill myself the last thing I would do is to post four threads on Bungie.net. I highly doubt anyone would.

In my opinion, it's just a sick form of trolling.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Looking through those locked threads, it's a shame that there are more posts missing, and thus members banned, than those who tried to help.

It's terrible what people will do to try to feel in control of someone else.

I can't think of a much better place than an online forum to talk about this sort of thing. No one knows who you are, it's easy to ignore the haters, and it lets you talk without fear of everyone you know judging you.

Hard is good.

Can we not direct all users to TheSite.org?

It's in the school counsellors toolbox for pretty much any problem, it could help with pretty much any person suffering from teenage angst or something perhaps more serious.

It's not insincere to direct them elsewhere, but a forum dedicated to the problems might be a more appropriate location for them.
