Subject: Cries for Help / Attention

I don't know about you, but if I was going to kill myself the last thing I would do is to post four threads on Bungie.net. I highly doubt anyone would.
I don't think you're in a position to predict what you would or would not do in that situation until you are. As Spartan_Natraps alluded to, logic and reason don't really factor into the thought process of someone who is suicidal.

And as I said in the thread that started all this... "I don't know if this is serious or not, but do any of you really want to take that chance?"

  • 01.18.2012 11:24 AM PDT

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

+1 to pretty much everyone who posted in this thread. It has given me a lot of reassurances about the community. Oh, you guys.

Edit: The above sounds sarcastic, but it is not.

Can we not direct all users to TheSite.org?

It's in the school counsellors toolbox for pretty much any problem, it could help with pretty much any person suffering from teenage angst or something perhaps more serious.

It's not insincere to direct them elsewhere, but a forum dedicated to the problems might be a more appropriate location for them.

True.

As Spartan_Natraps alluded to, logic and reason don't really factor into the thought process of someone who is suicidal.
Yes, I realise that. I can understand a single thread. Sure, you're in a bad place and you need to vent anonymously. Bungie.net isn't the website to do so, but I understand that some could come here if they were serious.

But to draw it out over multiple threads? That tells me that the user is just trolling.

Saying that however, I wouldn't post in the threads insulting the OP - in the case I'm wrong. I generally try to avoid 'attention seeking threads' altogether.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Ignore threads like that if they bother you. And there is that report button. Not my business if some emo kid wants to off himself and its not bungies either.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Isn't it also not your business if Bungie wants to make it theirs?

Thats up to them. Not sure what policy they have. But if they give into every thread like that, then i see a problem. Just my opinion.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Clearly by locking the thread and banning the individual, possibly taking away their last avenue for self-expression and method of reaching out to others.

Bye.

Around the world, around one million people commit suicide each year.

Some people have quickly pointed out already "What has a video game company's forum got to do with it?". Exactly why do they take it to practically anonymous forums? Is it seen as a vent? Is it the old "a problem shared is a problem halved?" idea?. I suppose that this place is essentially a no shame zone (Even though there's no shame in being brave enough to say, im on the edge. Help!!). It's a place to throw out a cry where there's no chance of anyone being able to attack you at a personal level. After all, we are all just people at a computer spouting words through digital identities.

I for one feel the thread(s) should be locked and a pm stressing the urgency in getting in touch with a doctor, friend or family member should be sent. The Pm should possibly also alert the member of the serious nature of suicide and to not make joke threads about it.

I am sorry that you feel that way.

But the moderators have discussed this issue frequently and at length. This site is a terrible place for someone who is considering self-harm to seek assistance. Allowing such discussion (real, fake, playing, serious, trolling, actual) is not in the best interests of our hosts, this site and the community.

We have a practice of locking the thread (and yes, banning the user) with a message along these lines.

Suicide isn't something you should try to seek help for on Bungie.net or any video game forum. Please seek treatment at your local emergency department and/or (within the US) call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. If you are seriously considering harming yourself and have enough concern to post about it here, please make a similar amount of effort and contact someone who really can (and wants to) help you.

This is not a place that can (or should) attempt to resolve or handle such serious issues nor is it the place to joke about such serious matters. The person on the other side of the screen who is posting about self-harm needs to speak to someone real, not to the members of this site. Period.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

If you are going to respond do so only to direct them to a suicide helpline. I'm going to comb through the two threads you linked and ban anyone that was acting like an ass. I don't care that the OP was trolling; suicide is a zero tolerance issue.
Good clarification. I agree this should be stickied in The Flood.

The Quest for 52 is a group committed to helping players complete all of the weekly challenges in Halo: Reach. We are committed to providing a friendly environment and organized forum in which players can discuss strategies for completing the challenges, help others with the challenges, and above all have fun completing the challenges!

From everything the Ninjas said I'm glad this is taken so seriously. Most of the time it probably isn't real, but if it is you wouldn't want to push someone over the edge to actually do it.

I'd think that they're longer than under a week, but I'm sure they aren't permanent.

Curious, are these typically permanent ban situations or what? Do users who create suicide threads ever get unbanned?

The Stig is dead to me

Someone's got to be a sick -blam!- to make up things that are tas serious as this. But whether a thread like that is real or not, no one should take the chance.

I'd personally recommend that if someone has already posted guiding to a help line, don't post at all. Also leave it to the ninjas.

He was a terrible person who I'm glad to see not be here anymore.

This isn't something to joke about and it's not something to troll about either. And those people who got banned were just as terrible.

Does Bungie have any sort of responsibility in this kind of circumstance? Is there anyone here who's properly equipped to help?
I think if you tell someone to kill themselves, and they do it, you can be held liable for their death. This would be a terrible thing, but it would be the user's fault, not Bungie's.

As for eligibility to help in such a situation, you don't have to be certified to help. The best thing you can do is say that you are there for them and to not do it. However, if you encourage them to go through with the deed, then you deserve any punishment that you get. Trolling or not.

in my opinion i think these types of thing should a serious subject and not a joke. also not something to be talked about on a Dev forum.i think all the people who flames a person who post a thing like that is not welcome.

  • 01.18.2012 1:02 PM PDT

Obviously you want to try and talk them out of it.

Even if does seem like a troll, there's still a chance it's a real issue. Responding to it with jokes or saying it's a stupid thread could really do some damage, and trying to pacify someone does no harm.

  • 01.18.2012 1:08 PM PDT

Oh, the mods blacklisted him.

Lovely.

Who has authority to sticky threads? Ninjas? Master Ninjas? The webteam? Something on this topic could do WORLDS of good if it were readily available.

Oh, nice one, Eagle! Always nice to see grown men displaying less maturity than most of the teenagers on this site, as well as making the Community look less mature than it already is. Great way to start of my Bungie.net experience for the day.

OT: I would recommend just locking the thread and sending them a PM with a link to something helpful, as someone already suggested. I'm not really sure why they were blacklisted; it appears that a PM saying "oi, don't do that again, please" would have sufficed, but it's not really any of my business.
