Simply to endure is to triumph!

What version of the MJOLNIR armor do the three members of Red Team wear who we meet in Halo Wars (Alice, Jerome and Douglas)?!
I would say that these are Mark V (at least the helmets look like the Mark V version). However, the Mark V was first used in 2552, so how is this possible?
It's also possible that they wear Mark IV but the blueprint from Dr.Halsey's Journal looks kinda different...

So what do you think?

Mark IV, see the cover of The Fall of Reach, similar armor.

Master Chief could not visually tell the difference between Mark IV and V (besides lack of battle scarring from Mark V being brand new).

Kinda hard to get something... 20 years before it's developed?

Stupid ass washing machine...

2531's Red Team wears the MJOLNIR Mark IV power armor. The helmet was basically re-wired for use with the later Mark V's systems (AI, shields etc).

No, remember that ONI can crack forerunner technology in a few months, so they probably had Mark VII and forerunner infused weapons, that's why they ignored the shields of the Elites in that cutscene :O

Mark IV.

Fixed. The shields are for gameplay, you were fine with just using common sense from the start OP.

And MJOLNIR Mark number is from what it does, not appearance.

Having shields makes it Mark V automatically. They had Mark IV.

I always assumed it was Mark V... Now that you bring up the date that's strange... I guess it'd have to be Mark IV or earlier.

Modified Mark IV.

Yeah. It had an early prototype shield system.

We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had.

Yeah. It had an early prototype shield system.

I thought that was just there for gameplay reasons not actually cannon.

Halseys journal specifically states that while they all started with the root Mk IV, individual customization and pieces were eventually made and shipped to the spartans to compliment their preferred battle tactics.

That explains where all the customization in H:R came from. You can imagine they were all wearing some of the many pieces you can customize your own guy with.

Though I highly doubt the pieces were anything but grey or olive green. The multi-colored spartans is just stupid, and hopefully only done so the player could differentiate them in the heat of battle.

Yes he can tell the difference. He lists the various slight visual differences between his armor and the one he sees on the stand aside from the fact it was cleaner such as the more compact pack for the reactor among other things.

Edit:

It's obviously standard issue MJOLNIR Mark IV Power Armor. if you're confused about the obvious shield system seen in Gameplay, that's just it. It's for Gameplay. Notice you don't see any shield flare ups in cutscenes.

By the way this used to be the case for some time, but the visual guidebook canonizes the appearance of shields in Halo Wars as being prototype tech being tested at the time.

What the bloody hell?

It still doesn't change the Armor iteration. It's still Mark IV.

No it does not change the armor iteration, but I'm just pointing out that the shield system that appears for it in Halo Wars is no longer just a gameplay mechanic, but now canonically justified by 343i.

Might as well also point out (since you were using it to support your earlier reasoning) that the reason why their shields never flare up in cutscenes to begin with is because they don't get hit by anything in the cutscenes. Not necessarily because it was proving a point that the shields were a (at the time) non-canon gameplay only element.

The shields are simply for balancing gameplay.
