Subject: Private Groups Cleanup

So today I went around looking for some private groups focused on Custom games. Unfortunately, I did not succeed in my goal, and instead ran into a whole lot of dead groups that really shouldn't be allowed to exist anymore. Below are snapshots that I took of their desolate group forums.

Example One

Example Two

Example Three

Example Four

Example Five

Example Six (Not Customs-related but whatever)

Example Seven

I would like to propose that if any activity is not detected in the forum of a Private Group for a period of 31 days, that it be automatically deleted, and its name be released so other forum members can use it to start a group.

Also, this brings up an interesting point after I realized how many groups were empty: are Private Groups not advertised enough? I understand that there is a "Private Groups Spotlight" available, but those usually advertise groups which have already become self-sustainable and don't need the extra PR.

The Classifieds are filled with clan advertising, and since so many people are always spamming out ads, you can find that your thread can be buried in the fifth page or so after only one day.

Would it be more helpful to have a "Private Groups" tab under the Community dropbox, which auto-links to the Groups spotlight? It would also be better to have another "spotlight" page showcasing newly-created Private Groups, regardless of member count. I understand that many people are annoyed whenever they are being spammed with Private Group invites on the forum, but if we allow them more space to reach out to members, this will naturally stop.

After a year of inactivity, I say. Some people take groups very seriously...

I like the concept of groups being deleted after a certain amount of time being inactive such as 0 posts in 1 month.

It would then allow people to join up to 25 groups instead of being stuck in a private groups queue forever.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

I like the idea.

Also, groups do not have enough recognition due to the spam that goes on in the "Classifieds" and the amount of replies that most post get, max post in a thread: 2-5. Sucks.

Delete groups that don't get one post a week.

Don't hold your breath though, the web team doesn't really pay attention to the community's call for work on the private groups feature.

Yeah, that sucks too.

Who the hell do you think I am?

I agree, OP. I also think they should find a way to better advertise groups.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

But that would kill HFCS!

You'd better get to spamming it then Qbix.

I do think groups need some work, and Bungie seems to usually agree with that. A month is a bit steep though, particularly during dark periods like this. Maybe a 6 month threshold would make this a bit easier to swallow.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I agree with the OP. It will solve part of the member queue problem also.

Yeah, which is why I also proposed a "new groups" spotlight.

I don't really understand why people would feel the need to join so many groups, but if they do, what's the point of having a private group queue anyways?

Love playing custom games?

Well come join Customs Evolved

We are group dedicated to playing custom games, map testing, game nights, etc. Anyone is welcomed to join, and we hope to have as much fun as possible!

I love how you joined my group just to take a picture...

Also, its my choice if I want to leave it up or not. The group is not useless. If there are cases where people want to join us but have no idea where our site is, our B.net page can be a great directory.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

In all honesty, I'm completely indifferent to this.

I joined a whole whack of dead groups. The pictures I took were all from random selection.

Then don't post. Simple as that.

The problem is, it's not really a private group anymore, and your member base have all moved off-site. If you want to advertise, The Classifieds are ^ that way.

How are we not a private group? And no, less than 30% of our member base has actually moved off-site. And who are you to redirect me to advertise in the Classifieds when I already am...

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I have two private groups to my name, and one of them I would be really upset if it got deleted. I use it as a testing area for any large threads. It helps a lot.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

So you want to delete content because you can't think of a creative name?

Yeah, that's a good idea.

You shouldn't be classified as a private group anymore because activity in your group is dead (on Bungie.net). All your discussion is now on your website. Thus, it makes little sense for your group to exist when all the events being planned are off-site. At best, your group is just a subtle re-direct page.

lol no

I want to get rid of useless search results that waste my time because when I finally end up joining something I might like, I see rows upon rows of dead forum threads with no activity. Recycling of names back into the pool is just an added bonus.

If you are testing things in one Private Group it would still be classified as active, if we go with Evilcam's suggestion of 6-month no activity deletion.

I belong to a long dead group that has brilliant threads I still enjoy reading. Why should that content be deleted to make a barely functioning search bar slightly less useless?

  • 01.18.2012 5:29 PM PDT

youtube

disregard video games

they should really delete groups that do nothing but troll and spam the flood about joining their "ossim group"
