The term "troll" is thrown around too much.
Is that too rough? Should it be lobbed around instead? Perhaps simply handed around? It was a figure of speech. To clarify, I was commenting on how widely used the term troll has become to describe just about anyone with either 1) a different view point 2) a sarcastic wit 3) a seemingly irrational approach to an argument.
People are stupid. I've seen (not to name anyone) a few new members quickly jumping on the troll bandwagon by saying that anything, even a joke, is a troll. Now, maybe this is an older definition, and if that is the case then please stop me, but I was under the impression that a troll was, to quote Wikipedia:A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.Sure, the article does go on to cover basically what we are discussing here, but I'm going to ignore that and pretend it doesn't exist.
I'm fully aware that you were speaking figuratively. As for the term troll and its definition, that's what happens when a once obscure term becomes gets household recognition. Its context becomes obscure.
