I'm here to have fun and win some games. Best part about Halo is easily the crazy custom games infection shenanigans that go on. If anyone wants to do some of these just hit me up on Xbox live.
The DMR stands for the Designated Marksman Rifle. It is a common weapon found in matchmaking and arguably the best weapon due to it's all around effectiveness.
Let's talk about weapon bloom. When firing the DMR you must remember that like most other weapons it has a bloom effect. This means if you shoot as fast as you can finger the controller... you will start to miss shots, especially at longer ranges.
Let's talk about shields. Did you know that a spartan/elite's shield is no more powerfull at their chest then on their head or toe or any other body part?
How does this help?
This means that when firing your DMR, your 4 bullets needed to lower your opponents shield do NOT need to be head shots, only the final shot fired after their shield is lowered.
Let's talk about fight or flight. When your in a game you need to pick your fights carefully. Halo, being a game that requires more than 4 bullets to kill someone means that you will not be able to take on 4 people at once.
If you see a single person or a couple that aren't paying attention, throw a grenade and get the jump on them. Chances are, they will try to fight back but be to confused to win.
If those same two people are instead running right at you, you should turn around, look down, run for cover, and live to fight another day. When you finally find a good 1v1 fight here's where you need to learn how to maneuver.
Let's talk about strafing now. Strafing is essential to win those 1v1 fights. There are many different kinds of strafing techniques but in my experience, the most successful strafe is the SK strafe.
In this strafe you move your left stick back and forth at an extremely rapid rate so that your opponent cannot target you. This tends to be more effective than a jump strafe because of your loss of control during a jump. PS: Adding crouches into your strafe annoys the crap out of those trying to headshot you.
Let's talk about CQC/CQB. In a fight you might see somebody run up to you quickly and try to go for a double bash. If this ever happens you will need to counter appropriatelly with your DMR. Lets go back to shields in order to properly discuss how meleeing works.
In Halo: Reach the shield system works differently than that of Halo 3. In Halo: Reach, a melee will either take down a shield, or kill the person, NOT BOTH (excluding kills from behind). This being said you will need to either shoot the person enough times for their shield to lower before you bash, or risk bashing early and being forced to melee again.
Let's talk teamwork. The biggest thing to help you with your skills is to stick with your team. A 2 to 1 fight is a lot easier to win than a 1v1 battle. Communicate, focus fire, and don't worry about wasting ammo (trust me, there's plenty).
To summarize the major points remember these rules.
1) Watch your weapons bloom. (You'll never get the final headshot if your crosshairs aren't focussed)
2) Don't go for unnecessary headshots. (Body shots til the shields down)
3) Pick your fights. (You're not a tank unless you're in one)
4) Strafe efficiently. (Keep your enemy guessing and try not to jump)
5) Don't Melee to early. (Make sure the shields are down before you stop shooting)
6) Stick with your team. (Most gamemodes have the word "team" in them, keep that in mind)
7) Have fun! (It's a video game. That's why they were invented)
