If you frequent the Flood enough, you would've seen users post this... a lot. Sometimes derailing entire threads. Here is an example. Only five out of the 15 replies (as of this moment) are relevant to the topic at hand.

Are these kinds of things reportable? Things like "cOLD/mOLD", "No, Xbox.com is spam. Try Xbox.com. Much safer", etc etc?

Just curious. For discussion value, do you think these should be 'reportable' or should just be considered mindless fun?

hella frreal

I've never tried Xbox.com myself, I hear that it's a gateway website. Your immunity to it builds up really quickly. Next thing you know you're thrown in a prison cell for possession of -blam!-.

Wait, that's censored? I uh...okay.

Although I am guilty of doing it several times, it should be. All it does is derail the thread or just fill it with useless posts.

  • 01.18.2012 11:59 PM PDT

Unless someone were to post some kind of detailed instructions pertaining to the issue other than "Go to xbox.com", then I don't think it should be bannable.

If not, then yes, it should be counted as spam.

  • 01.19.2012 12:05 AM PDT

Nobody ever seems to get banned for doing it, but it is just annoying spam, especially when it isn't related to the subject (see here), or if people spam it over and over.

It is essentially mindless fun, no harm in it. And I don't regard it fully as spam personally. Spam to me is a single individual posting repeatedly in such a way. In this case, it's multiple users which is in fact just the same as quoting "chains" if that makes sense.

That's spam.

It doesn't really matter what you think constitutes spam, it's still spam.

The harm comes about in de-railed threads, and the mass of irrelevant posts which separate actual discussion between users.

In my opinion multiple people joining in on a fad is more of a problem, and I really do consider most spam as fads. If a single person goes around posting spam then they can easily be blacklisted; problem solved. It's when multiple people join in on these fads that it becomes a problem.

The bottom line is that if you see a post that you think breaks the rules you should report it, leave it up to the ninjas to decide what to do next.

Just to comment on the particular thread linked in the OP I would not consider "Xbox.com" spam, as that is actually a legitimate reply to the thread. I could go on more about that but I'd like to keep this post short. :)

Start banning people for it however, and it will stop. Well, not completely, but still.

Fair point, but not relevant when it's obvious they were doing it in a spam kind of way. They had no intentions of helping the OP in that thread.

If they wanted to help, they would've at least linked to correct page like another user did. But let's not get too involved with the one example in my OP. It happens in a lot of different threads - usually when they contain the words "Microsoft" or "Xbox".

And that's why people need to report posts to make the ninjas aware!

The users in that thread were having a bit of fun. You need to draw a line between "having fun" and spam though, but then I'm sure everybody has a different opinion on where that line should be. I know "Xbox.com" has been used as, what would be considered by the majority, spam in other threads too.

Okay now that thread has been revived and I consider it spam. >.<
And yes I did report it.

How so? Are you implying that my OP is considered 'spam' because of the ending line?

As do I... unless the user in question has actually responded directly to the OP (Or in this case, written one) - in which case I don't really have a problem with it... as much.

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head, The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of dead's the rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste of the blood on my lips, again

..It bothers you that much?

I am actually contemplating writing a post on if we should consider these spam and intentional derailment...again.

It became a problem one before a few years back, and bans/warnings had to start being handed out. Rightly so, and it's just about to that point now. It's not clever or funny, it's not constructive, and it only serves to entice posters to fulfill whatever dumb concept the OP was trying to avoid and draw attention to at the same.

Honestly, I think you should report liberally with everything you don't want to see in these forums. Since it takes multiple agreeing people to get it sent to the report queue, and a moderator to actually take care of it from there, there's no reason why you should hesitate to make the first step. Your report has multiple filters if it is a bad judgement call.

Personally, I only report memes like that if they REALLY detract from discussion. For the most part, while they show up pretty frequently, I find them easier to just ignore and continue on with the thread.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

If they ban that, they might as well ban jokes.

I report more than I post. I'm starting to think of a new use for the report button. Somewhat intact like the "Ignore Feature" that was discussed a few months ago in this forum.

Anything with Xbox.com, inb4, cOLD, Adapt, nope ur bad, reachtards, etc. I just report out of habit now.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

I would consider it reportable. It's spam, plain and simple.
