Invasion is the best default playlist in Reach because it's the only playlist where vanilla Reach works as intended

Spire would be a disaster if all of the Elites had NRs off of spawn. It's bad enough that they have 3 NRs right by their spawns AND they can pick up and use pistols. It would also be a disaster if the Spartans had DMRs because when they die the Elites pick those up as well.

All I'm implying is that starting with no viable weapon off-spawn is not fun. Even AR starts has the Magnum. In that case, yeah, Spire would be imbalanced, but that's a different issue.

Breakpoint is a great example of how horrible no-precision starts for Elites is. You have spartans with pistols and some DMR's demolishing Elites. And what are the Elites doing? One of three things - throwing grenades, crouching with camo, or attempting to get lucky by running straight for the capture zone.

@zomechin there is a NR or two on breakpoint. also i preffer the plasma pistol over the regular magnum because it is good for double combos. and the elites in invasion slayer have the upper hand in tier two with the banshee

3 Elites with NRs and Camo sitting up top on the glaciers are enough to keep the DMR and Pistol users at bay while the Evaders with their PPs out move in and take the territory. Breakpoint P1 is actually one of the easier (if not the easiest) phases to capture out of all 3 Invasion maps.

Again, if Elites were to spawn with NRs it'd just be worse because the Spartans would pick them up, and then everyone would have NRs and DMRs, making moving out in the open impossible.

Tu Playlist and ZB Filled that need.

Firstly, I didn't mean to say that Invasion Breakpoint was hard. It's just annoying. Only two or three people (for the most part with only one life) get NR's. The other people are: performing melees, using camo, and/or throwing grenades. No one should ever be limited to only those three shallow elements of gameplay. Shooting - and killing with actual guns - should be the main idea here. And it isn't for every player.

So give them magnums?

I used to think that way too, but upon further examination of the playlist I realized why it would be detrimental to Invasion should the current formula be changed. Every player in Invasion has a unique role based on which side of the map they spawn on and which loadout/weaponry they have available to them. These supposed 'shallow' elements of gameplay are agreeably very one-dimensional on their own. However, when combined with the rest of the players on your team, they actually have more depth to them than what is initially conceived.

For instance, the player with camo needler probably isn't going to be getting a lot of kills. Instead, he's popping in and out weakening the enemies for others to clean up so they can collectively advance. The camo is also disrupting the spartans, making it difficult for them to see where the offense is moving next. The guys with Evade are taking the territory, and if they encounter any AR rushers they have a 3-shot + melee to take them out.

In a regular match of vanilla Reach, it would indeed be very boring to have to rush a territory and resort to the inconsistencies of CQB. However, in Invasion's unique gameplay it works because of the role each player is assigned. You're not supposed to be on equal footing all the time with your teammates.

I think the problem you're facing is that you're trying to play from range when you do not have a ranged weapon. If you aren't the guy with the NR you aren't the guy who's supposed to be sitting at a distance. Whether you like it or not, you're given a specific role in Invasion and it's your duty to learn the strategies necessary to best perform your role. And it is doable. Breakpoint's first phase is the most difficult phase to skunk in Invasion when the Elites know what they are doing.

I played with Invasion experts yesterday and I was completely blown away at how well the gametype works when everyone is performing their roles efficiently. It really is night and day compared to going in with randoms who don't know how to set up.

Zome, long story short, when you learn how to play Invasion you'll probably never complain about anything other than the retardedness of Spire's 2nd and 3rd Phase Elite spawns. At that point you either like the gameplay of Invasion or you don't. Most of the common complaints though are null and void when you play with people who know how to deal with it.

They didn't even touch the territories

Hi.

Well, I'm not really interested in (using the following term loosely) class-based Halo. I'm not interested in a game where the only skill of an individual is to be a good teammate.

We can look at it from strategical points of view if we want, but the fact that will remain is that I do not enjoy periodic and continuous crouching and meleeing. I do not enjoy feeling individually useless.

I understand. I personally like how team-oriented it is, but I understand why it can be a turn-off to many players. It's a radically different experience.

The good thing though is, like I said earlier, it's the only playlist in Default Reach where the game is functioning as intended. Everything else plays too slowly and I'd much rather play them under ZB/TU settings instead.

In a nutshell, Invasion is Reach full-blown, and the rest of default Reach is just a failed spin-off of Halo

I'll have to dis-agree with you. IF each person plays their role, that doesn't help the fact that the loadouts and balance is retarded. 2nd Phase Spire is much too easy, especially if you have a few buddies in AL next to you. 1st Phase Boneyard is much too hard, as the Spartans spawn with a gun that is much too easy to kill with. It takes the entire enemy team to take out the first objective, but only 3/4 if everyone is skilled.

  • 01.20.2012 2:40 PM PDT

And so God called Moses to come forth but he came fifth and was therefore disqualified.

I wish invasion medals counted as competitive medals, then that would be all I would play.

  • 01.20.2012 2:41 PM PDT

I'm still of the opinion that Invasion is a horribly imbalanced mess.

It's actually the most balanced default Reach gametype believe it or not. Everything works as intended. Granted each map has its own share of problems; however, once yo ulearn to play it you can work around them.

I was under the impression that every single Spartan weapon was overpowered when compared to its Elite counterpart?
