Subject: How Long Would it Take for Humanity to Reach Covenant-Level Tech?

I was considering a fanfic where the UNSC crushes the Covenant due to overwhelming technological and industrial superiority when I realized that I wasn't very sure when to set it. Do you guys have any idea? I thinking anywhere from 200 to 2000 years, depending on forerunner tech research.

So, as if they would have never encountered the Covenant?

Hundreds of years. The UNSC was finishing off the Insurrection by 2525, which would mean they would stop their arms race and focus again on colonization or bettering their relations with the Colonies. The UNSC only experimented a huge leap in technology thanks to their encounters with the Covenant.

The normal rules of technological advancement do not apply in Halo. I would maybe say 200 years. Warfare is not the only source of innovation and scientific advancement. Most Covenant technologies seem to just be refined and tidier versions of pre-existing UNSC technology anyway. Inventing the technology is not the issue the UNSC has in most cases, it is making it practical, cost effective and energy efficient.

Waypoint Moderators aren't really Moderators, just power hungry and its goal is defend their beloved Halo at all costs. (Meaning that they wank Halo too much.)

BS Angel is alleged foe so, be wary of Waypoint and its moderators! Do not attempt to move to Waypoint. Enter your own risk.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Not very long, they were getting close to reaching Tier 1 with all the Forerunner tech they were finding. Had the Covenant not showed up, they would have been at Tier 2 or Tier 1 in 2553. Look at the Infinity, less than a year and they had a ship that could probably take on a Super Carrier and win. They also had access to Onyx and Installation 03.

Damn, I need to catch up on my canon. I used to be a walking Halopedia. Well, either way, Humanity had access to Installation 03 and Onyx, so had they had 25 more years of uninterrupted research and development, they'd be MORE than capable of destroying the Covenant.

Um, no, are you really that stupid? The UNSC wasn't anywhere near tier two technology as of that time. Onyx was locked up tighter than Ted bundy's cell and They only Recently found 03.

  • 01.20.2012 11:14 AM PDT

Well humans are classified as an innovative species meaning that we take technology that we encounter and modify and improve it.

The Covenant are a group that takes what they see and simply implement it and do not make changes.

Since humans have encountered encountered a lot of forerunner tech as well as the covenant versions, I would expect there to be a lot of development in the following years. Based off of Glasslands, humans have already started implementing some Forerunner tech, and that should only get better as time goes on.

No need for insults...
But you do speak some truth, Covie tech is way better then unsc tech. But they didn't take full advantage of their tech...

But ye The unsc is like mid-tier 3 at best...

Although things such as the nova bomb, unsc infinty and spartans are around tier 2 tech. But overall the unsc is mid-tier 3.

  • 01.20.2012 11:53 AM PDT

"This is the prototype NOVA Bomb, nine fusion warheads encased in lithium triteride armor. When detonated, it compresses its fusionable material to neutron-star density, boosting the thermonuclear yield a hundredfold. I am Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb, temporarily in command of the UNSC military base Reach. To the Covenant uglies that might be listening, you have a few seconds to pray to your damned heathen gods. You all have a nice day in hell..."

I mean removing the influence of the Human-Covenant War.

The problem with taking out the covenant interaction with the UNSC would be that the discoveries and reverse engineering that had already taken place, brought around some of the greatest scientific and technological advances, which put Humans years ahead of their time.

Take that away and they'd still be using field camo, and tractors to fend off the superior-in-every-way covenant.

This.

Folks, let me remind you. UNSC is Technology Tier 3, period. Achieving to Tier 1 will take long time. They has to achieve those feats like Forerunners did. Destroying stars, having a warrior craft that is capable of destroying entire continents, causing stellar collapses, a utter complete mastery over slip space travel, take possession of millions of world, etc.

No, it won't take few years. It will take at least a hundred or two hundred years to arrive that Tier 1 or 2.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

The UNSC are already Tier 2 by the end of the Human-Covenant War:

The species has the ability to perform exceedingly accurate slipspace navigation, near-instantaneous interstellar communication and man-portable application of energy manipulation. The unified state of the 26th century Covenant stands at this level.

Exceedingly Accurate Slipspace Navigation - This is the only one not confirmed, but it is highly likely that the UNSC will posses this within a few years if not already. They have the info and schematics that Cortana would have gleaned from the Ascendant Justice, as well as access to Onyx's ships. The ship that Osman uses in Glasslands may posses such abilities.

Near-Instantaneous Interstellar Communication - Yes. Parangosky and Osman communicate in real-time a few times in Glasslands.

Man-Portable Application of Energy Manipulation - I have interpreted this to mean technologies that manipulate energy extensively and in exotic ways that are also small enough to be used by people, aka Man-portable. Such things would be the Spartan Laser, Mjolnir's energy shields, Mjolnir's micro-fusion backpack etc.

The UNSC appear to fit all of the criteria. Technology tiers are about more than just "BIG BOOM GUNS".

This makes sense, Look at what the Covenant accomplished with access to forerunner tech. The Covenant are notoriously inefficient when it comes to technology and prefer the decorative approach.

Humanity's potential was demonstrated in First Strike when Cortana refined and calibrated the Covenant plasma torpedoes into a thin beam (thousands of times more deadly than what the Covenant had designed).

I'd say humanity is at tier 2.5 as of the end of Halo 3. They are definitely more advanced than they were before the Covenant arrived, but they don't have the capability of shielding entire ships and making perfect slipspace jumps on a standard ship.

Then I was off, I would have guessed that it would take at least another 25 to 50 years.

To be honest, when I first saw all this in the weekly update I thought 2 things.
#1- there is an actual legendary ending but,
#2- No matter what anyone does,(kill all the bobs, hit all switches etc) that until the "time" mentioned in "There'll be another time..." is reached there won't be a legendary ending.

The weekly update by bungie has slowed my hardcore search for what unlocks the legendary ending.

Problem, Cortana is MIA. Unless she gave all the information of the AJ when they were briefly on Earth, then MAYBE scientists could help on that. Our best bet though is the forerunner technology found on 03 and Oynx. Hell, we could use some engineers like Vergil to help in the construction of a faster FTL drive.

I'm not even going to get started on horrendous Grasslands, but I will say that refinements in slip space travel were being made (page 422)

I can agree with some parts of the Man-Portable Application of Energy Manipulation. Keep in mind though that the only real way we could have reached tier 2 by 2553 is through weapons research as mentioned in the Bestarium.

I would like to point out that humans made it to tier 3 WITHOUT the help of forerunner tech until the end of the Human-Covenant War, unlike the Covenant who used the key-ship and other artifacts to their advantage. Given that and how we won the war, I would say we would be tier 2 class by at least 50-100 years.

I forget, but what tier is the flood. Obviously they were up there when they were smacking forerunners...

How about now? Or have they always been the same tier, seeing how they can evolve effortlessly?

I would have imagined them to be Tier 7 or under unless they got hold of other technology.
