After the credits ending in Halo 3 ODST, i'm guessing that Vergil, the Huragok tells Johnson about the Ark and it's what the Covenant is looking for. But in Halo 2 at the end, 343GS tells Johnson and Miranda that the Ark is on Earth. Well he doesn't directly tell but you can assume he did because the scene changes before anything is said.
Now wouldn't Johnson know of the Ark already by the time he talks to Vergil, or is it the other way around?
I'm very confused by this.

Wouldn't Vergil know even less about the ark than 343?

I believe he would. I'm just saying wouldn't Johnson already know that the covenant is after the Ark by the time he speaks to Vergil? Or did he speak to Vergil before the ending of Halo 2?

Um... If Johnson was on the ship when it jumped to Delta Halo, end of ODST is definitely after that.

As for his question, who is to say 343 knew where the ark was? Vergil may have simply answered the question of what they were doing on Earth, and that is excavating a Forerunner structure.

Course, I'd love to know how Johnson and Miranda got back to Earth...

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

343 tells Johnson that The Ark is on Earth. Obviously it's only the Portal. As 343 says on The Ark, the Forerunners limited his, and each monitors, knowledge on other installations, so he obviously couldn't have known exactly where the Ark was, nor that the entrance was on Earth.

Virgil tells him what exactly it is the Covenant are looking for, and where it's located exactly since 343 was with the Carrier Shadow of Intent. Humanity had no idea that the entrance to The Ark was underneath New Mombasa, and that's why the Covenant were committing practically all their forces there.
