"This is the prototype NOVA Bomb, nine fusion warheads encased in lithium triteride armor. When detonated, it compresses its fusionable material to neutron-star density, boosting the thermonuclear yield a hundredfold. I am Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb, temporarily in command of the UNSC military base Reach. To the Covenant uglies that might be listening, you have a few seconds to pray to your damned heathen gods. You all have a nice day in hell..."

Ok, bear with me on this one...

As we know the Arbiter and our boy MC John 117 were Mortal Enemies before the Arbiters' world collapsed around him, under the realisation that all he had lived, fought and nearly died trying to defend, had all been a colossal lie by the Prophets.

The Chief was nearly always a step behind the covenants seemingly endless wealth of knowledge and relentless assault on the living universe.

This was until they all sat down and had a nice chat with Jabba's distant and anchient relative, The Gravemind.
Who, upon making a nice cup of ultimatum for the unlikely duo, let them in of the fact that they needed to work together to save all that lives and breathes.

But (AND IM JUST GETTING TO THE POINT) the Gravemind had been around for hundreds of thousands of years acumulating a wealth of knowledge that the forerunners would have envied.

Which made me think...could the Gravemind have known the forerunners?

What if they had also sat down and had a chat?

I believe its possible that at some point the Gravemind grew knowledgable and wise, and perhaps turned its sights away from meaningless destruction of life, and turned to the ones holding the keys to Oblivion.
After all, all it wants is for all to be equal and peacefull. Isn't it?

So, Gravemind survives and waits....and waits, until the perfect moment when a reclaimer could be found with the ability to restore balance and peace to the Universe...

...or does he wait to lure everyone into a false sense of security, gaining trust and powerful friends along the way...until the time is right to strike with finality at the heart of all sentient life.

Well theres my theory. Let me know your thoughts and thanks for taking the time to read.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

If you haven't read Cryptum or Primordium, yet, I strongly suggest you do.

Awesome. Cryptum is the first, Primordium is second. Primordium just came out this month and the third and final novel in the Forerunner Saga will be out sometime in the future. You will gain a lot of insight on the backstory of the Haloverse specifically Forerunners, Precursors, Halo rings, the Flood somewhat, and more. Plus, this will enhance your Halo 4, 5, and 6 experience since 343i is really delving deep into the lore.

"Don't mistake your rank and number for superiority.
The oldest child may learn from the youngest."

While I haven't read Primordium or Cryptum, but still intend to, I think the Gravemind's intentions were obvious. But I still find it ironic that something that has a wealth of knowledge like the Gravemind succumbs to such a base temptation like the gluttony to consume all sentient life. Also ironic that it was defeated by a near extinct Tier 3 species when it almost bested the Forerunner. Not that these don't make a great story, just a little unlikely, but that plays well with luck.

I can see your idea of why the Gravemind might see peace by creating a single sentient species, although it didn't help humanity avoid conflict until they were in danger from the Covenant.

I don't know, maybe his motivations will be revealed in this next trilogy.
