Subject: The Covenant Have Some Serious Mental Issues

Ok, so we all know that the Didact activated the Forerunners' Halo array, and they all got wiped out. And the monitors contatained the Flood on the Halos. But here's the question - why the hell did the Covenant release them? I mean, come on. I know that they had no idea what the Flood was, but after watching the CE Anniversary terminal videos, and seeing that the Flood were contained in all these tanks, why would the Covenant just randomly go and release whatever occupied them? It's not as if a firefight released the Flood, because the Covenant were in the containment facility alone when it got released. The Covenant, therefore, have some serious issues with not touching the china when they go into the china shop.

Thanks, now I'm imagining an Elite awkwardly trying to fit in a china shop and attempting to use tiny teacups in his massive hands.

It's kinda hard not to when the china are sacred holy artifacts and the shop is God's emporium.

No, but that's what confuses me! If the artifacts are sacred, wouldn't they avoid touching them? Besides, wouldn't they be more interested in some humongous Forerunner temple, like the Library, than they would some ancient research facility with neutral-buoyancy gel containers? I make it a rule for myself that if you ever come across completely abandoned labs with any kind of liquid filled tubes like that, you get the hell out of there before suspenseful music starts and some zombie or Flood infection form or creepy-looking mutant jumps out at you and tries to bite you in the neck. It's a pretty sensible policy, IMO.

You need to remember that The Covenant were stupid sheep following the orders of Prophets who even themselves knew that Humans were the rightful heirs of all things Forerunner. If they misinterpreted Humans as artifacts at first, it could be possible the Luminary/Orders of the Prophets were not clear and it was an accident.

Ah, yes, the "sacred" - and ever misleading - luminary. I forgot about that. If it led the Covenant to believe that the humans on Harvest were "oracles," then I suppose it might just as easily have misled them into releasing the Flood on Installation 04.

Best statement ever.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The Covenant thought the Flood were dead. They only knew of them through the legend of the their war with the Forerunners.

They thought them to be no more than buggy men. Oh god were they wrong. They most likely thought the cointaiment facilites would be empty.

Either that, or they seriously underestimated the Flood.

We should know better, because we are better.

Maybe they saw the flood in stasis and released them so that they could kill them? They might have thought they were an insult to their gods and wanted to cleanse the place.

I suppose... still, it just seems like this is one of the few things that just never really gets explained. *sigh*

we do know that the covenant did know about the flood (Halo Wars). The only thing is, they didn't know whats behind those doors. If the covenant had to travel deep into the place to see the flood, then maybe a grunt tripped and shot a tube in order for a spore to scurry away. The covenant in there just so happens do not know about it(the flood was kept a secret, i dunno why though.. just my theory) and ignore it. Thus, infection.

Hmmm, perhaps out of sheer curiosity? Lolololol, I mean really. I guess I can understand from their viewpoint. If you contained an ancient living threat held in a can that almost wiped out the forerunners, wouldn't you be very curious as to what's in it.

They probably were over confident and underestimated the legend. A fatal error lol. From a non-biased point of view (meaning you never knew the consequences), would you have been curious enough to look in to it?

Didn't you read my earlier statement? Of course I wouldn't have! I do my best to keep away from creepy abandoned labs with neutral-buoyancy gel tubes. It's a pretty effective policy, all things considered. I'm still writing, aren't I?

The covenant did adapt forerunner technology for their own purposes, and if i remember right the flood was an absolute secret so i don't think they ever knew. The forerunners should've had a *You release this -blam!- and your gonna die man* sign right before they press the open button. Or maybe it was the order of some ignorant higher up and they all would've been kill for heresy for not opening it up.

You know, all this religious fanaticism of the elites and the prophets can really get in the way, you know? I mean, the Covenant theology was already a lie (see the substory about the rise of the new hierarchs in Contact Harvest), but making a Covie squad release the Flood is a whole new level of stupidity. But yeah, you're right, their should have been a "Caution: Extremely Tenacious and Infectious Parasite" sign, you know? Like, "Release at your own risk. Halo, Inc. does not assume liability for injuries or damages caused by the Flood. Have a fantastic day."

Nope. And now that Bungie has handed over the proverbial reins to 343i, we likely never will. Once again, *sigh*
