Subject: Mandatory Literacy Test?

It simply does not seem necessary to have since it is not a huge problem. When somebody posts with bad grammar, it is not a huge deal that would require supervision. The person's statement or question would still be understandable, and if it is not then do not respond to the user.

Yes. And while we're at it, the forums should require proof of identity and a numeracy test.

By proof of identity I mean: drivers license, birth certificate, etc etc.

Numeracy test could be simple.

If 1/2x +1/2(1/2x + 1/2(1/2x +1/2(1/2x + ... = y,
then x = ?

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I disagree. This wouldn't deter anyone. How hard is it to use google which will automatically correct the sentence for you?

Proof of identity isn't necessary since it doesn't benefit the forums at all, and neither does numeracy because not many people go on this site to do math problems in the Flood or elsewhere.

The ability to mete out flawless English onto the Internet doesn't not mean that a poster will won't do goodly. We'd be just as well served by asking our community to complete a math exam.

Yes, how hard would it be? The simple fact is that people are lazy and won't bother with it, which is why we so many forum members post unintelligible paragraphs which absolutely butcher the English language.

Yes it does.

Requiring proof of identity basically limits accounts to one per person. No more alts and trolling would be limited.

Numeracy is just common-sense and would filter out the <13s.

I thought proof of identity was already conducted via Xbox Live gamertags. As for numeracy, I see your point, but my literacy test would already weed out those <13

Anyone can make a new WLID. It takes a real badass to make a fake ID that checks out.

I've been here a decent amount of time to know you're all crazy

I only have one thing to say...
In all honesty, absolutely not. I know I don't want to come home from school or work to come here and get criticized or put down simply because I made a mistake. Obviously, yes if the message the member is trying to get across is unclear, then it is a problem. Other than that I'm sure most members don't care.

If being able to distinguish between There/They're/Their and Your/You're means you have flawless english, then why did I fail english?

Checkmate, Urk.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Lolno, this is the internet; only bloggers and businessmen use grammar and punctuation correctly.

That confused the -blam!- out of me and I've been at a college reading level since 6th grade (I'm gude @ gramer nd vokabb).

@spaboolly

I think we should ask for official copies of SAT/ACT scores (or foreign equivalent). And only the people with the highest scores in English get titles, Ninja powers, and special positions. This does, of course, mean that I will be taking Achronos's job.

(Just kidding! Please don't punish me....)

  • 01.20.2012 4:54 PM PDT

I agree with this. I think that we should establish some automatic punishments for these offenses. Misspellings = 1 week ban. Improper punctuation = 2 weeks. Grammar and/or usage errors = 1 week.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

You'd be taking the fun out of a lot of grammar police wannabes.

What does grammar have to do with posting in a forum?

If the post body is sound, just with a few grammatical & spelling mistakes, I don't see the problem.

Edit: Unless you disagree with them, but can't come up with a counter argument, so you correct their grammar & spelling.
