On The Flood, there are a number of extremely obvious alt account trolls who don't seem to get banned for it. I'm wondering, why aren't they banned? These are the ones who will use almost the same name for every account they make, and say the exact same things on every one of their accounts.

Note: I'm not talking about shock site spammers (they seem to be taken care of pretty quickly most of the time). So, any insight on this?

Who the hell do you think I am?

I'm guessing it's because the mods aren't always in the flood (which they should be).

You can't ban an account before it makes an offense.

If I make an account calles "politicstroll" and then get banned, and then another account called "politicstroll2" shows up, and it was created on the same day as the other one got banned isn't that a little suspicious?

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

My best guess would be variables. Some mods may not be too familiar with The Flood and its regulars, some members may have a similar name to another, and some Alt's may just be used "just because", even though their original account isn't banned.

My main point is that moderators aren't really able to distinguish an Alt between a regular users account - they just don't have the tools. In my honest opinion, it would be best not to let such circumstances cloud a mod's judgment. It's best to go case by case - history by history. Then it's a lot simpler for them; instead of worrying about Alt's they get to focus on the basics:

If a rule is broke -> take action
If a rule is not broken -> stalk them till they trip, then take action.

Edit to above: Suspicious? Absolutely. Concrete evidence of a trolling alt? Not exactly.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I agree with Rokit. Besides, the suspected Alt could simply be a different user riding on the coattails of the original, getting attention from the original's notoriety.

Suspicious? Yes.

But they shouldn't ban an account until they break an offense.

That's like driving, being pulled over, recieving a speeding ticket, and right before I start driving again, I recieve another speeding ticket.

It is better to die for the emperor than live for yourself

I suspected Flood hate in this thread.
there still is none.
i am happy.

And why should there be more mods in the flood?
Recon is all we need, the flood arent the dumb people you believe us to be.

I bet if you make a thread about it something will get done.

More like being arrested because you look exactly like a suspect. If it's a mistake, it will be sorted out. If not, then you get charged.

Yes. That is a better example. But the difference between it and being a mistake is still an unjust ban.

Mods tend to have grounds when they ban a user. But banning someone with a similar name (or even an obvious alt) is a little rash.

So how exactly would you go about "sorting it out" when the user was banned for trolling before they ever stepped out of line? No matter how you look at it preemptive banning is an awful idea.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

You can't really stop them from making another account, can you?

There are even ways to circumvent permabans.
The only thing those pre-emptive bans would do is delay the inevitable.

That's why I support Recon's idea of ban = ignoring the poster without him knowing about it.

Key

They're not banned for the same reason anyone is ever not banned:

There was no mod online who saw the posts of those users and felt they broke the rules. And, if they are breaking the rules, a mod hasn't seen any of their posts.

I wish people'd stop making threads like like "Why isn't/aren't _______(s) banned?!?!?!" It's always the same -blam!-ing answer.

  • 01.21.2012 2:05 PM PDT

It's not against the rules to have an alt. It's only against the rules to use them to evade bans. If the first profile was banned, then it's an offense.

My guess is that the Mods don't care enough. If you PM one of them with a link to the profile, they'll ban it most of the time.

Then report them, that's all we - as the normal members - can do; maybe more people will report the post, or maybe not.

Really this, give the option for an ignore ban for blatant trolls/spammers

I'm not asking for anything to be done, I want to know if this is, in fact, the right answer. Mods have access to information and communications we don't. Maybe the answer is your obvious one, but maybe it's not.
