You know in Halo 2 the massive structure in the middle of the city you see in several shots...well its a "space elevator" like the name suggests...takes you to space.

Its an elevator... to space.

Kind of a retarded idea if you ask me, but hey, sounds cool. An elevator all the way to space couldn't stand up to winds and weather and stuff, could it?

o ok.
yea ive read reports of it in REAL science mags that were discussing it.
And they have a really complicated way that it might work, but i dont think its practical.
Its a sci fi thing really.

no no no!!!!!!!!!!!
thats not it at all
the elevator lifts spacecrafts and goods that are being shipped out of the atmosphere without requiring giant engines.
Thus allowing ships to get rid of huge boosters and making space travel MUCH more efficiant

It would take them up to a space station more than likely, and yes; scientists have really come up with hypothetical blueprints to build one in real life. I don't think it's on the top of their list of things to do, but it could feasibly be done.

...only in The Flood

The spaceships would all be build in space, and you have to use the elevator to get to them. Otherwise all the ships landing and their exhaust would completely destroy whatever was left of the natural climate.

So when the covenant jumped through slipspace while in the Earth's atmosphere, and that huge explosion occured in New Mombasa, the building got whiped out and now all thats left is metal rings? Why are they in the shape of rings though? Wouldnt that have been whiped out as well?

I think what you are refering to is an "Arcology" or something like that.

It's like a giant structure that some of the highly populated countries are looking into. Because there is no more room on the ground, the plan to build up.

Imagine a city, in a building, complete with food shops, hospitals, and stuff like that.

No we are referring to a SPACE ELEVATOR and we know exactly what we are talking about.
It is a transportation device for things that need to get to space, to get to space without having a huge rocket attatched to it.
