Subject: A way to ban users

Roll the dice, try again.

What if instead of the whole.. ban and you can't post. Let them post, except their posts are invisible to everyone?

Send them the PM like they normally get, just that they would be wasting their own time when they think they're doing something. they might be curious as to why no one is responding to anything they post.

ideas/thoughts?

So we'd basically be trolling members by muting them?

Think you can take me in NHL12? Send me a message/invite

Seems like cruel and unusual punishment...

What would be the point? They are muted and know about it... nothing would be any different then it is now.

Who the hell do you think I am?

This idea seems like it would generate many lulz.

I support it.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

It is funny cause many users wanted to "mute" users off of the forums for posts that are not even breaking the rules. It is good to see that doing that is like trolling.

Key

Recon suggested this a while ago. Then someone copied him and suggested it again.

I don't like it. It's dickish tbph.

Why would we tell them? I think it'd be more effective if they didn't know they were banned that way.

Don't bring that up. It has nothing to do with this. The suggested mute feature is to shut people up that we don't like. And I'm okay with that. I shouldn't have to see people I don't care about in any way shape or form.

But that's neither here nor there. Don't bring it up, it's irrelevant.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Or we could just not tell them about it...?

It's kind of cruel, but it could potentially help with the more annoying and frequent trolls.

Maybe, but I think muting people off of the forums is not a good idea and a waste of time for the webteam. They would be using up server space to post things that no one will see. And once they are "un-banned", all that hidden stuff will come back.

Halo without Bungie is like a cookie made without love.

This is the second time I've seen this but I think it should only be used for the highest crimes. Example: John Cena's meat spin spam.

You could do it, however it would work better if you never informed them. They would continue posting like nothing happened, but since no one else could see them, no one would reply to their flaming and perhaps they'd get bored with it.
This idea would only work to make them think that no one is giving their trolling attention anymore and they might stop.

Really? You really think, after all that you had been through in that thread, you really think it is the best idea to poke at that area and make the community remember the valid points made in there?

As for the thread, why is everyone treating this concept like a new thing? This has been brought up before, pages and pages of threads on it.

  • 01.22.2012 11:01 AM PDT

Ask any question. I'll help with anything on site or off.

No, because the would totally get rid of the purpose of banning users. Why let them post if there banned?

Completely different. I use the word "we" to refer to the moderators, since we would be the ones "muting" people. Personally, I think it'd be hilarious if such a feature existed, albeit a bit unprofessional.

For that reason, I'm against it. The current ban system works pretty well. You get banned: your posts are hidden and your voice cannot be heard but you know who banned you and the reasons why. There's no [good] reason to fool people into thinking that they can still be heard, when they can't and notifying them of their ban but still letting them post is pretty pointless.

Please do not derail the thread any further by bringing up a completely separate (and irrelevant) argument.

e: That last bit goes for several of you.

Isn't this Recon's idea? I mean, I'm sure he made a thread about it somewhere.

Anyway, I do think it is a good idea.
