I like a little bit of both.

This.
I prefer scripted moments a little bit more, as it makes me emerge and feel.. real.
Cutscenes should be saved for those epic moments that require moments beyond scripts.

To be honest, when I first saw all this in the weekly update I thought 2 things.
#1- there is an actual legendary ending but,
#2- No matter what anyone does,(kill all the bobs, hit all switches etc) that until the "time" mentioned in "There'll be another time..." is reached there won't be a legendary ending.

The weekly update by bungie has slowed my hardcore search for what unlocks the legendary ending.

Scripted moments in real time and can possibly affect the level are nice. Cut scenes should be saved for the EPIC moments, like when Spartan Red Team destroyed the Honour Gaurd Elite's and when Forge killed Ripa

Scripted sequences get annoying if they take away the player's control (i.e. NPC(s) trying to open a locked door while you are waiting), sure the first time it happens it looks cool but when you replay it again it gets annoying. I prefer cutscences but don't mind scripted cutscences when they don't get in the way and don't appear all the time.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Half-Life 2 is full of scripted moments [Partially due to no cutscenes] and that worked out just fine.

Scripted sequences work when done right. How it's done right is subjective to progression of time it takes and importance to the story.

Some can be minor things that really adds another layer of intricacy to the atmosphere. While others could be long and drawn out with no real contribution to the story or experience.

You just got to find a balance I guess. IMO The Halo Trilogy did it fine.

Those were Stealth Elites actually, hence the no shields and camouflage.

In Reach, you can see a lot of fighting going on in areas that you can't reach. Is that classified as scripted or not?

Because if it is, then wouldn't Reach have more scripted events than Halo 3?

  • 01.28.2012 7:29 PM PDT

I don't mind scripted events, but often they end up translating (in later playthroughs) as "Come on, stop staring at the shiny whatever it is and open the damn door."

Or after seeing it a few times, you tend to just move past it and not even look.

That is, unless it's one which removes control of the player from you during it, but remains in first person. Those can be just as annoying.

Although my gamertag may be Blu Soldier, I am not in the military, I just thought the name sounded cool at the time.

Scripted moments are the best, because they make you feel more immersed in the game. Im not saying we shouldn't have cutscenes, i am just saying they are better.

This. The part of Halo: Reach that made me feel the most emotion was when the corvette shoots down the Savannah. The Captain was so cool. :(

Playing for fun everyday.

Scripted moments add a little bit of movie like quality to a game. They help provide a more in depth story in my opinion. But over doing it make it feel like you aren't even supposed to be playing the game and should just watch it like a movie.(call of duty.)

I liked Halo 3's style.

Where you actually had a degree of control over what was happening. Unlike the first person, overly dramatic cutscenes in Reach.

But I'd much rather have just third person cutscenes.

I only recall two (ToTS background battles and The Package background battles. Everything else seems to be part of the skybox.)

Why can't we put Bungie Cards here?

I love scripted moments. They make the game different, real and interesting.

Reach kinda felt like one long firefight match...

-Dead Orbit..

i miss the interactive cutscenes in halo 3. EX: shows a letterbox cutscene of johnson punching a brute and being kicked into the small prison.

if you press "A" the cutscene still goes on and you can snipe the brute while he kicks johnson around.

With ODST they only had a year to complete the game so thta might be the reason. As for Reach I have no idea.

I like having the odd scripted moment that makes the game a bit more interesting, kinda like an easter egg.
For example I like in Halo 3 in the first mission Sergeant Reynolds is interrogated, and I like how it is kind of irrelevant to the plot but you can change what happens, in this case by killing the brute.

Show Faith/Defy Fate

imo, the more scripted moments you have in a game, the better it is the first time through. But its utterly destroys the replay value. Each time you play it, its the same exact script. I'd much rather leave the sandbox to rule and have a few awesome cutscenes.

I came to play, not watch or be a part of a movie!

Cutsceens they lend themselves to thinking outside the box more for full story immersion. Kinda feels like a baptism of sorts. Properlly used one of the best tools you can use when changing the world for good and noble purpose.
