Subject: Which game has the best single player campaign?

ULTIMATE FAILURE.

Posted by: Ignorant baryon
halo 2. i would be surprised if anyone answered different. most people around here now started with halo 2. the people who started with CE left a long time ago, because they couldn't handle the depth and the subtlety of the halo 2 storyline.

Can't tell if trolling...

Aanyway CE was the first I played, although until Anniversary ODST or 3 would have been my favourite. It sounds ridiculous and shallow, but playing back through the old levels with an updated look really reminded me of how good it was, and made me enjoy it as much as I used to.

EDIT: Thing is, now I can't decide whether I would like CE if I played it for the first time now, comparing it as I played to the other games of the series.

This is actually a difficult decision, at least in hindsight. If you take a look at Halo 3's ending moments (Lord Hood, MC, Rtas, and Thel on the ship; Chief's reunification with Cortana, and Johnson's death), they were some of the best scripted cutscenes in a Halo game period. Especially Johnson's death accompanied by "Greatest Journey" playing was pretty profound.

Nonetheless, here's a list according to their respective strengths:

Most fun to play: Halo CE, Halo Reach; the former really captured a Spartan's superiority in combat to a regular soldier (an aspect which, in my opinion, other games diminished), and Reach with its fantastic physics engine and great visuals is a pleasure to play.

Best written: Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST. Halo 2 was not the most fun to play maybe because of its insane difficulty at certain points, but without a doubt it was the best written. I found ODST a little boring; Bungie could have made the plot more engaging while keeping the ODST-detective-esque feel to the game. Of course, only having a year to develop it more than makes up for it. Excellent writing, especially Sadie's Story.

Most emotional: Halo 3. Considering it had an entire franchise built around it, Halo deserves a category for this since it introduced and developed an array of great characters. Sgt. Johnson's death in the third - although contrived some may argue - was certainly pretty emotional.

Bungie has demonstrated some of their strongest aspects as developers through the past five games they made, but not one consolidated everything into one.

No. I can imagine in 2001 it would be a huge deal. But people should stop judging it like it's 2001 and maybe think that although they still love it to bits and great memories of it, it comes no where near the standard of modern games.
The thing Halo CE did right that no other proceeding Halo game did, except possibly Reach, is make every weapon in the game powerful but only useful for certain situations. I remember playing The Library, and I had to make do with the weapons I had sometimes; they weren't useless, but perhaps not optimal. It made you feel like a Spartan in the field who has to make the best of what he or she has without feeling like some weapons are just awful to use.

Halo 3 particularly screwed this up. The pistol, and assault rifle were complete garbage on higher difficulties. In CE, the AR could be your best friend for shear rate of fire and clip size. Bungie did an incredible job with weapons in CE, knowingly or not, and managed to screw it up for the rest of their games.

May I say that I completely disagree

All weapons are overpowered in Halo CE, and you can use any weapons to kill any enemy. I can use any weapon from assault rifles to plasma pistols to kill hunters, and any weapon works against the flood. There is absolutely no thought or strategic element to the Halo CE weapon sandbox

And you could not be more wrong...

- Snipers have next to no effect on the Flood, Banshees and Wraiths.

- The Assault Rifle is extremely underpowered, it does next to nothing against Elites unless fired in 3-shot bursts. I'd love to see you take on a Zealot/Ultra with an Assault Rifle...

- The Shotgun was only effective at very short-range, it lacked the ridiculous accuracy of Halo 2's.

- The Needler was only useful with the supercombine, it would only really harm Grunts with a few individual shots.

By your logic, I can approach a Wraith and take it out with a Plasma Pistol on Legendary. There are strategic options, you're just trying to find any excuse to justify your hatred for CE.

I agree on snipers

I have killed tons of elites with the assault rifle

The shotgun kills flood from miles away

The needed tracks even when you arent aiming at the enemy

The plasma pistol is ridiculously overpowered. Yes, its not the best against vehicles but it destroys hunters

Seriously, I love using the AR against them.

"If it can bleed...It can die."

Halo 2. All have an intresting plot, but Halo offers two playable characters and is overall ust the most enjoyable for me. Plus it has the scarab gun. Can't beat that!

Halo 2, mainly because it was the longest and it had one of the best stories in the series.

Very difficult question to answer.

I enjoy the nostalgia of playing through Halo CE and Halo 2. However ODST has proven itself to be a very awesome campaign. Granted there are more options to take in the later games like customizing skulls and bonus multipliers, but I take it you're just talking about the gameplay itself.

i always found myself replaying the level "The Arbiter" in Halo 2, mainly because that's the first time you step into the covenant shoes. I can't recall what musical theme is it during Halo CE in the level "Two Betrayals", but it's right before you rush into an encounter where the covenant and the flood are facing off against each other. It's in 6/8.

That music always gets me pumping. Nothing beats Halo 2 split-screen campaign though. Loved it, especially on legendary.

What do you mean specifically?

Worst gameplay?
Worst story?
Worst characters?
Worst voice acting?

I think halo 2 had some of the BEST story. It was one of the few games these days that actually sucked me into the feeling of the story. However, I love the way ODST played gameplay wise. Basically this is how it goes:
Story-Halo 2
Game play-Halo 3 ODST
