Every single Reclaimer in the Halo saga have been human. Maybe the Forerunners thought that the humans were the only trustworthy race to activate the Halos.
I highly doubt that the humans are the Forerunners, or that we are descendants of them, but I still believe that it's possible.

"There are fighters and there are targets. There is nothing else."

well i just had an interesting thought inspired by this thread. What if the chief and . . . say a cruiser full of marines went back in time. I don't know how, but they just do. What if they end up back on earth 100,000 years ago and they get into the ark and they fire it. Some people have put forward the theory that people inside the ark are safe. So what if they survived. Because the halos only kill intelligent life all the animal and plant life on earth would be intact. The masterchief and the cruiser full of people go on to populate the earth with humans. This is why the ark is coincidentaly located on our home planet.

I dunno, it was just a thought. I don't know how we could explain evolution or any of that with this theory, but hey, it would be kind of neat.

I am...whimsical today.

Just another word on the whole armor thing...in the books the convenant are shocked that Chief's is so powerful...they based their designs on records from the forerunners...so the forerunners wore armor...according to 343 so do reclaimers...and in an ironic twist the chiefs armor has been upgraded with convenant tech...seee the loop here?
The Covonant's technological expertise is immitative rather than innovative. The Covonant found scraps of information about things, like armor and stuff, but not as much as GS knows about it. But the humans could combine their own tech with the covonant stuff, and thus improve upon it. Like Cortana did with the Covonant weaons system in First Strike.

So what if they survived. Because the halos only kill intelligent life all the animal and plant life on earth would be intact.
I thought it killed life with sufficiant biomass to sustain the flood? Or does it leave plants alive? If that is the case, hows about Gravemind???

I think it really behooves us to pay attention to Cortana's last words in the teaser: "this is the way the world ends."

She doesn't say, "this is the way a really big battle kicks the crap out of the earth." She says the world ENDS. Them's is some harsh words.

I really think this is meant to be taken in a fairly literal context - ie. either earth is physically destroyed or the particular timeline the chief and cortana are in goes bye bye (see my crazy donnie darko thread).

Obviously, Bungie is not going to have the Earth blow up and have credits start scrolling on the screen. Also, I believe Frankie said that the teaser takes place approximately 1/3rd through the game. If the world ENDS 1/3rd thru the game, it seems like the only logical way the game could continue would be via time travel.

I firmly believe Master Chief will go back in time either in a conscious effort to save the world as its being destroyed or will be thrown back in time against his will (by gravemind??) as the world is ending.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to believe that the remaining 2/3rds of the game will take place in the distant past (especially given that the supposed codename for halo 3 was forerunner). Guilty Sparks comments in Halo 1, as pointed out earlier, seem to strongly support the chief and him getting together long, long ago.

Good times. :)

If John went back in time, not to Halo 1, but WAY back...to the 100,000 years war...what if HE fired Halo the first time?

That was my point, NoobSlapper. Guilty Spark's comments in Halo 1 imply that they met long, long before Halo 1 took place.

I believe he did fire halo the first time.

This game is so going to rock :) I loves me some time travel.
