It's better that we don't know what Master Chief's face looks like. If you have a mysterious heroic figure with no distinguishing marks, then the fans of that hero can imagine what he/she looks like. In other words, if the hero could be anybody, then it could be me, you, that kid in the back picking his nose (Okay, maybe not HIM). This is what we call an inspirational hero: a hero that people can identify with because not much is known about them, and what is known about them can be related to their fans. Think about it, if we saw Master Chief's face, then Master Chief wouldn't have nearly as many fans as he does now. It's like if Spiderman was written without knowing that he was really Peter Parker.
