I <3 you too Bungie

I'm not going to go all extemporaneous on the different monetization strategies out there today, but I do feel like this is worthy of discussing. Since Destiny is going multi-platform I could see several different things, some that I hate and some that I love:

Subscription - Pay for a period of time and get unlimited access.

Product Sale - What we know of as the traditional retail of game discs or game downloads.

In-Game Purchase - If you're familiar with HoN you understand this. You play for free or for a steeply discounted cost, but you have to buy upgrades or play for an extended time to earn all of the possible functionality.

Sell Users - Most commonly through advertising, but commonly is combined with another monetization strategy. If you can sell multiple items to your user-base you can lower cost and increase profit. Think of Steam purchases through their centralized portal. Imagine taking the Bungie.net traffic and pushing multiple games and products to it at a slightly reduced price. I don't see Bungie going free-with-ads.

Why did you click the more button? By accident? Reply is at the bottom...
They call me The Precursor

I'd say product sale but a Steam like system may work. I guess it just depends on the scope of the game.

I r guy who gun to teach u lesson

Product sale. I'd be very sad if it was anything else...but everyday I'd stare at the game and finally buy it since its Bungie's first game away from Halo.(I'd want to see how good it is, and base of that what the future for them is going to be like)

f2p. There's a reason the most successful games atm are f2p.

Haha just kidding they're being published by activision.

  • 01.24.2012 12:39 PM PDT

I hope it is just a simple product sale, where we get everything the game has to offer after purchasing it, unless DLC is released of course.

This.

I hope Bungie realises that the majority of people were ready to chuck all their money at any Halo game, not at a Bungie game.

I agree.

"[Destiny] is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherit to the programing of The Bungie. It is the eventuality of an anomaly which despite my sincerest efforts I've been unable to eliminate from what is other wise a harmony of mathematical precision.

While it remains a burden insidiously avoided it is not unexpected and thus not beyond a measure of control which has led, [Destiny], inexorably... here!"

However extemporaneous monetized Destiny may be, it, again being an unbalanced equation inherit to the programing of The Bungie and an eventuality of an anomaly it shall remain, inexorably... awesomeness dude! Pure awesomeness! Bungie rules!!! Gnarly.

The Risk Is Worth The Reward.
Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War.

Yep I agree with that, I would hate to see it go anyother way.

Personally I would not be surprised if it's micro-transaction based.

I'd prefer a monthly subscription based model with a small up front once-off to purchase the game. All content included with quality Australian and region based servers.

Yes I'd pay monthly for that.

Balancing speed with visual fidelity.

I really hope that Bungie continues to make games for the sake of making games, and not to make more money than they need to.
I hope they don't let Activision push them into exploiting their fan base.

Windmill simulator. We saw snow in the vidoc so there's the possibility of manually defrosting the windmills in winter seasons/climates to keep them running. The new Mythic/SLASO mode could include sporadic fireball rain to up the ante.

Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

I surely hope they'll market it to the Mac. The Mac news a good FPS.

But I'm assuming it'll be sold on Steam, hard disk, and eventually through digital downloads within Microsoft's newer consoles.

Bungie made other games before Halo. Such as Marathon, Pathways into darkness, Mythic and Gnop. All great games for their time. None of them nearly as good as halo. Not saying they are bad either. Marathon is a fun game. Anyways back on topic they will probaly do a product sale. MMO I am hoping and free of subscription as well.

Key

I doubt they're going to come out with a monthly fee. -blam!-, it's 60 bucks a year (maybe more now?) just for Gold (if you buy a year at a time, I dread to learn what the monthly fee adds up to).

I think they're going to work off of strictly retail sale, as well as a heavily marketed campaign of Destiny swag (hats, shirts, jackets, pens, condoms, etc.).

They would lose a LOT of their dedicated fans, many of whom are college kids who (on the whole) probably don't want to have to cut into their funds to dole out a monthly fee to play the next game.

I think, considering how long it's been in production/design, and how well games developed for many years (excluding Duke Nukem Forever... *shudder*) usually turn out... I think they'll do well enough to be able to (maybe?) host servers for some sort of MMOFPS, if that is indeed what they're planning on.

And if they're not making an MMOFPS, then that's just less money they have to put into servers and more money they can give to the hardworking employees and invest back into the company.

TL;DR
No monthly fee, fools.

Considering the implementation of maps is not even known to be utilized in this new game, nor DLC, your hypothesis seems to be somewhat baseless to say the least, my Fowl Friend.

But how much money do you need to make? Just a little bit more. Hate to break it to you, but Bungie is in business to make money. They just happen to care a little bit more than the average studio out there about having an awesome community.

Кланяються мені!

I have a slight feeling the next stage of the evolution of gaming will be cloud gaming. No need for consoles or computers with decked out hardware. I can see Bungie investing in this. They took a step in that direction with Aerospace.
