It's the end of this current story, which means like it or not, you're probably going to have say goodbye to the Chief in one form or another for halo games. Seriously though, anyone who thinks Halo will become an abandoned franchise needs their head checked. Just because the trailer says finish the fight, doesn't mean the series itself is over...just the Human vs Covie war.

I mean, the essence of the halo story revolves around the forerunners and the rings themselves, not really the war. The war is just a backdrop through which these mysteries reveal themselves, also acting as a catalyst and kickstarting those revelations. Well, at least that's one man's opinion.

Another thing is whether or not Bungie will continue to be the prime developer of the series. Another studio could take the reigns, leaving Bungie to move onto new IPs while just taking like a supervising role in the new Halos, which I would definitely love to see more than a Halo 4, made solely by Bungie, in 3 years. Also even though they've just went through a ton of changes, after Halo 3 who knows, maybe they'll pull a stunt which a lot of other developers have and split up into more then one studio. The new one for continuing Halo, the old on for new projects.

Long Story short: Last game of this story line. More story lines to come. Bungie or not

It is the third and final Halo game.

However, if you're in denial or haven't read what anyone has said, I have this to say:
Bungie will never ever tell you if it is the final Halo game.

End.

Onimusha was a trilogy too. Oh wait a minute...Onimusha 4 just came out two months...WITH A NEW STORY LINE AND PROTAGONIST
Seriously, if something as popular as Onimusha could warrant this treatment, surely Halo would.

We know that this is the end of this story arc and we know that this is the end of the Master Chiefs adventures proper, (as is said in this interview) but is it really the very last, never to be seen again Halo game ever? On a personal level I hope not, and actually quite doubt it. There is still a metric ton of fiction in place with lots of room for expansion. Heck me and feeble mind have come up with a solid half dozen story scenarios ranging from prequels and sequels, to off shoots, and side stories. If I can come up with that many you'd think Bungie has too. Now, putting aside personal feelings and looking at this question from a purely econonic/business point of view it seems unlikely that such a lucrative property would be allowed to simply go away especially if Halo 3 sells like gang busters when it's released. Based on that fact alone I can't help but feel that there are (at the very least) plans in place to continue the series in some form or another at some point. Would such a game be Bungie's next project after Halo 3? No probably not, but it's somthing that we could see again in a few years from Bungie or some different developer all togather for that matter. Lest we forget that there are still the Forerunner and Project Orion rumors floating around out there?

In the end I think we should wait and see how Halo 3 ends to get a real feel for what Bungie is thinking. What happens will be very telling as to weather there will be some room left for a sequel or prequel of some sort. That said I'm guessing that Halo 3 will wrap things up pretty nicely, but it won't be air tight and will leave just enough room to keep hope alive. Like Onimusha, and many others. Companies can say "last game" but that rarely if ever ends up being the case.

Had to check the sticky before I said anything. In a recent issue of Game Informer magzine,( I do believe last months). They made mention of a Bungie game called Forerunner. Could be the working title of H3? Don't know. As for Trilogy's. Peirs Anthony has written several. Of course most of his become a series of Trilogy's. A Trilogy is just a basis for a singular story thread. Case in point "Lord Of The Rings". Tolkein wrote several other stories about Middle Earth. As stated by others, This is probably the end of MC. But not the end of the Haloverse.

This is the finale, MC is expected to die in some heroic feat.

If the arc is activated, and the world ends, it will be the most origional ending. It would just be borring if they did up to HALO 7 and then found some more alien stuff and did a HALO: search for the walking cane of truth.

Fact is, in any game: MANKIND NEVER LOSES!!!!!

I prefer the covenant so it's just me.

There's still gonna be a Halo MMORPGRTSFPS right?

Boy I sure hope so. But probably not till 2011 when Xbox 420 comes out and Verizon FINALLY gets fiber optic (FTTH) internet to my town. Comcast cable just ain't going to cut it in the next generation of online gaming still several years off.

Killing off the Masterchief is pretty much the same as pouring a can of gasoline on a big industrial size bulk container of cash and then lighting it on fire. We'll see if they decide to do that...
