Subject: Are we wasting our time suggesting anything?

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Honestly, I've grown to think that it is a complete and utter waste of time. I've suggested feedback plenty of times, and even the small things, hell, even the things that were already fixed get shot down. Either people view a suggestion for improvement as an attack, or they refuse to even consider change at all.

Bungie is a software company, who employs web designers. Unless you're also a web designer, what could we possibly suggest that they haven't already considered? Why would they care what we have to say, beyond whatever amount of caring it takes to tell us that they care? They have the site data. They can see what we are doing. Why would it matter what we say we want, when they can use patterns of activity to determine what we will actually do/use?

Suggesting feedback or giving your opinion on this site's operation is completely pointless, and a waste of time. Of course, I think we can say that wasting time is why we're here most of the time, so it might not be such a bad thing.

why not take all the list and put all the choices agreed on in one topic. Then every time someone has a good idea put it in the post we see if everyone agrees, then when it is accepted delete all old post and add this to the list. And then we restart.

We already did, before the most current one.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Making suggestions is fine. Expecting a response or a "we'll get right on that" is unrealistic however.

But if the idea is good, I would imagine it will be seen, and if it was not something (or similar to something) that a web dev had in mind, they aren't going to completely discard an interesting or potentially positive feature.

But as far as "here's the menu and we'd like to order the following...." No, anyone who expects that is kidding themselves and almost certain to be disappointed.

This. I don't think much of anything we've suggested in the past few months has actually been put onto the "To-Do List", as it were. Even when Acky or a member of the Web Team actually replies to a thread about a feature, they're either undecided and noncommittal or they've already thought about implementing it, and that thread didn't make a lick of difference.

I mean, I'm not saying that we need a constantly updating list of features to be in the site update or anything like that, but a little more clearly defined feedback would be nice.

Discussing among ourselves about this is useless if nobody on Bungie's end is receptive to said discussion.

Don't confuse listening to what you guys say with doing what you say or altering production schedules that are they way they are for good reasons.

At minimum, ideas presented here inform decisions and spark ideas - while we may not like a particular idea, it often can make us think about a particular problem a different way.

The big problem is that we can't really communicate what we think of most things because doing so is more complicated than a few forum posts. I guess what I'm saying is that you should treat your feedback more as a brainstorming session (where there are no bad ideas) rather than quibbling over implementation details (which is where a lot of you get hung up).

You can't analyze usage patterns for a feature that does not yet exist.

If there was going to be a discussion about website updates, who would be involved and who would be considering the community side of things?

That's pretty much what I said in my first post, that you're the experts and we aren't. And that we don't have access to the data that you do.

Let me ask you a question, then. If no one on this site ever made any suggestions at all, would things on your end be any different than they are now?

They can use data from other sites with these features. Or they can use the data to decide how to update features that do exist. Or they could see what is difficult to do, and make it easier.

O hai

Its their website, why should they listen to what we want. If they did that, the amount of stupid, unneeded, childish things that would be implemented would make the forums seem like... well it'd seem like Halo Reach

While I understand what you're saying, it just seems annoying that sometimes it can take an excessive amount of replies just to warrant legitimate and insightful replies is all.

I don't know, maybe I'm being incredibly thick and you guys do this all the time. I wouldn't doubt it.

That's a hard question. A lot of what we do is based on extrapolations from existing data. So while we can't measure things for features that don't exist, when can extrapolate information from both commentary and data about features that do that fall into similar classes of functionality (like stats, social, identity, groups, content, anything, really).

You can't make games without seeing people play and then iterating on that experience. The web site is similar, with the benefit that we are much closer to the feedback and can generally iterate faster.

You're probably feeling frustration because Bungie as a whole is currently "dark". I'll just leave you with this, though: considering there hasn't been a major functional change to bungie.net for a significant period of time... just what do you think the Web Team has been doing? If you knew that you had a window where you weren't releasing stuff (and therefore had an extended period of time to work compared to your usual time)... what would you do? :)

That's the thing, too many people are of the opinion that the following is true.

listening=complying

They aren't. I can listen to someone all day long and never do a single thing they suggest. I can listen to 100 people a day, and not adopt one thing presented to me. But, I can also take something that was said by that 1 person, or by the 100 and it can influence me. Listening makes it possible, but it doesn't make it certain.
