Subject: I know rank doesn't equate to skill

But I still always feel like the other team is just "supposed" to be good because of how high of a rank they have. I mean, logically if you have put that many hours into the game, you should know about how to play it well, right?

You can't just practice something that much and then still suck at it. Idk, maybe that's just me.

I also hope they would go back to 1-50 from Halo 3. I just want the normal ranks back. If you're new to Halo, you wouldn't know what anything meant really and matching someone who has a sun or a moon next to their name would be pretty intimidating when you're like a captain or brigadier or something.

Does anyone here like the playtime-based ranking system in Reach?

Not myself. I would have prefferred a 1-50. Although, either way I get better as a player everyday because I'm willing to learn. I'm sure 1-50 will be back or a lot of people will just "give up" on this series.

Immortality: A toy which people cry for, And on their knees apply for, Dispute, contend and lie for, And if allowed Would be right proud Eternally to die for.

Meh. It's ok.

1-50 or even a division-based ranking system would be better than what we have now. :/

Or arena accross all playlists. So you always play people your own skill.

Those high ranks do the same thing every day. They aren't going to get better unless they play with the intention of improving. Otherwise, you can play 10,000 games and not change at all skill-wise as long as you're still making the same decisions.

I'm afraid having everything be ranked will just create more cheaters.

One of the reasons why the MLG playlist is so great (well, to me at least) is the lack of a ranking system. No one feels the need to try to cheat the system and it's just a straight up match between two teams. The only thing you get from winning is the sense of winning. I think that's how it should be.

I still get cheated though, but it's only been a handful of times in MLG so it's no biggie. As opposed to the Arena where I couldn't even search at times because with how low the population is, you're almost guaranteed to get cheated if you search at certain times.

1. Rename 'The Arena' to 'Team Slayer'.

2. Remove the current Team Slayer.

3. ????

4. Profit in the form of a highly populated ranked playlist.

That's what I thought at first as well. However, if people would simply pay attention to how they play, they could learn so much from it. People do get better over time and it tends to feel natural because they learn things slower than others. Like for example, we all know we're supposed to avoid encounters where we're outmanned, but we can still put ourselves in a position where only one of them can shoot at us. That's the secret to winning encounters against multiple enemies at a time. After enough encounters where you get outgunned like that, you slowly pick that up.

True that. Allso very few actualy cares about a stupid trueskill rank, if they did care way more would actually play Arena compared to lol Slayer.

Let it go.

You only get better by playing with and against players who are better than you.

"Angry Angels, Honour & Loyalty!"

well, except for a cruel (but psicologicly understadable) desire to make a statment about "Hey-look-I-m-so-good!", I dont even understand the reason hard core (and no doubt, good) players come to "social" Team Slayer and kick our noobiest asses.
And yes, OP, people can play over 10.000 online games and have a skill (on MM) of crap...just like me.
To understand that, you must discover what makes the person play. In my case, the fun of playing with my wife.
I never cared for rank or skill, if I did I would go play MLG or Arena. Since I know I dont belong there, I stick to the basics...
But thats just me...

It's not the quantity of playing/practice, its the quality.

Dumping on randoms (who are most likely at least 5x worse than you/they are) all day everyday is not going to make you improve/good at the game.

Ever since i started playing halo reach i try improving myself everyday i play and it seems to work, but I still have a problem in rushing people alot and that seems to be the same routine for me. I got a good DMR spread, but i really don't care for that.I try to find a way to get the upper hand on people when i'm not using the DMR. Idk I guess I was just meant to rush.

Yes.
And prefer to be a noob you can trust to give you full sniper (since I suck big time at it, but seem to run faster ;) ) than to know ( and profit) all the spaw points in every single MM map, only to became another nominee to the "Greatest Jerk, 2012 Edition".
But then again, thats me...

Happiness is a warm gun

The idea of 'Everyone wins' killed the will to try in Halo.

The beauty of 1-50 was that you could LOSE your rank. So instead of people boosting K/D in objective or playing selfishly in Slayer, people actually played their hearts out to WIN so that they don't lose their rank.

Now you get credit for just playing, no matter how bad you are.

I say 1-50 ranks and Experience points ONLY given for winning.

Loved in H3 you could tell their win ratio just by dividing experience by games played

Even in Social??
In Halo 3 I was 1804xp, Captain, grade 3 in Social, even with more than 6.000 games.
So...do you still consider dividing experience by games a good choice, or the lesser bad thing?

You have 2495 exp total, and 6305 games played. Meaning at a glance you could tell you lose more then you win, expecially when you consider the possibility of double xp.

still though the fact that your highskill was 21 speaks volumes about your true skill level for H3, whereas you are the highest possible rank in halo reach, but that really says nothing about how 'Good' you are as a player

  • 01.25.2012 7:32 AM PDT

I'm in love with Jesus and proud of it!

I remember back when I was a Sergeant and would flip out every-time I'd see somebody like a Commander or Lt. Colonel on the other team. I'd always assume they were really good (when in reality I was just a bad player).

Now I see high ranks and, thanks to b.net, assume that most of them either AFK in FF to get their rank or full party boost.

The playtime-based rank is not an accurate indicator of skill, as you never really know who you're going up against skill wise. I've stomped Inheritors and gotten creamed by players as low rank as Recruit. Playtime should play a factor in SOMETHING in Halo, but not rank.

I think you should get cR for playtime and the Armory while your rank works on a completely different setup (1-50). That way, you could still earn the cR payout for armory completion while at the same time have a visible indicator of how skilled a player somebody is. I know both systems are abused, but at least one of them gives you visual cues for how skilled a player is, not how many hours they've pumped into the game.

  • 01.25.2012 7:36 AM PDT

Boltshot = mini shotgun

OP I think the same way. When I see people of similar rank to me(or close to Inheritor), I'm like "Aw come on" before checking stats. I'd expect them to be at my skill level or better. But that's not the case half the time.

Yah the true problem I have with time based ranks is not how it impairs my judgment on another players skill, but rather, the effect it has on the mindset of the player. As I said before, when it was 1-50, people actually tried hard to win, as a loss not only meant no experience, but your true-skill would go down meaning you would have to try even harder to get your rank up.

I miss the tension that this kind of mindset presents, how tough the matches can be, and how players reallly tried to work as a team and win.

I remember when I finalllly got my 50 in H3, it took FOREVER (I was a brig general with over 5000 xp before I got my 50) it took 13 wins in a row on my 49 to get a 50 in team slayer. The matches were tense (I was playing solo) but when I won that last match, and got my 50, that was such a good feeling, and the journey to 50 is something I never could replicate in reach, and is probably one of the reasons I've moved on to other games.

Walk by faith. Dude. Not by sight.

At my age, no amount of practice will improve my reaction time and eyesight/ability to aim. That being said, Halo is still fun and I loved the H3 ranking system. There were certain ranks in H3 that were unattainable for me at my skill level, which was appropriate.

Nicodemus, are you kidding? I´ m 44, dont tell me about reflexes..lol...
Anyway, I feel no difference between having our ass kicked by a Recruit with a 3.50 K/D or a Inheritor ( or even a Precursor) that only got that high because he enjoys Firefigt...and got lucky on my... ;)
