In my opinion, Halo 3 is the best overall game of the series, but I like Halo 2 better precisely because it wasn't as perfect as Halo 3. The mission designs were awesome. The fact that you could get out of a lot of the campaign levels and run around outside the playable space was really cool, because it made the game feel less like a track that you were running through, especially the Outskirts level.
As far as multiplayer mode goes, I would definitely rather play Halo 3, but the Halo 2 multiplayer was also very good. Halo 3 just pushed the envelope a lot farther than Halo 2 did, especially with the Forge editor.

I have never played Halo 2, but it seems ideal compared to the other games because nobody gave a hoot what armor you had or what rank you were. You just played....
Level boosting actually became a pretty big issue at one point, which I think turned a lot of people off on the game. People who were quite good would often lose intentionally in order to get in matches with lesser players who they could easily beat, and that would get them up to a higher level. In this way, it seemed like most of the top (level 50) players were actually playing down to about level 20 or 30; a lot of them hadn't gotten to level 50 legitimately, and they couldn't stay there legitimately, so they had to boost back up.
That was a major part of what turned me off on the game. People deliberately screwed with their networks, too, to make the connection bad for other players. One second there would be nobody around, and when the game would catch up with the other person's network, you would be surrounded by enemies.
That's not to say that online play wasn't fun, it was only one in five or six matches you would get somebody like that. The biggest problem was people quitting, especially in a CTF match. At least in Slayer you had a chance of racking up some points, especially on a big map, and if you could get your hands on the powerful weapons. One time I was playing CTF on Ivory Tower and my whole team quit halfway through the game. I scored one point alone and I almost scored the winning point, but I got killed three feet away from the pedestal.
