“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”

is there away that if you do change the blam filter that you can add certain websites that people have posted before? what i mean is that when people post links to shock sites it just shows up as blam?

...we'd have to parse every forum post you view on load...
Is that really that performance intensive? Considering one can cache the results/pre-parse recent posts, just how much of a performance hit would it be? You can't get that many page views, surely?

I love how almost every argument so far is in this video.

lol

Also, the profanity filter isn't that bad. I tend to think that it does an okay job of keeping people form insta-flaming others when they disagree. They are forced to come up with a more intelligent way to insult their opponent which takes more time than most are willing to give.
That's where the true linguistic geniuses are revealed! They can weave an insult so powerful and based in utter hatred that they are then able to insult them without saying anything actually insulting.

XD

The obvious solution to that is to store both the censored and uncensored text, but again, as our time is limited, investing in making it easier for you to say naughty words is not exactly high on the priority list.

I do not really care, it has no effect, plus you can get around it by replacing letters, so why complain.

I do not really have much of a reason to swear at all.

I don't care at all, to be honest.

To cut the amount of work on the server / data stored, couldn't you just store each censored word as a reference to the uncensored word in a database? You're already doing the filtering on the text in the first place, why not ad a database reference to the posted text. The post could still read -blam, but the actual text being stored could have a database pointer eg[address to indexed word here]-blam[/address].

When the filter is turned off that whole address is just displayed as the uncensored word.

This. It really shouldn't be that intensive at all.

Well guys, sometimes people swear. And since I'm not a 10 year old girl, I think I should be able to decide if I want to see someone's post in it's entirety or not.

I think -Blam!- has a certain charm to it, and sets the site apart from others- It's feels like it fits here.

I don't care much for curse words anyway, I swear and hear swearing enough when I'm at work. If the filter were gone, all you'd get would be little twerps or uneducated masses, swearing every two seconds, probably not even spelling the curse words properly, and using it incorrectly in a sentence.

Besides, you can usually get the gist of what curse word a person is using from whatever isn't censored.

Furthermore, how would turning the filter off improve my, or anyones' experience on these forums?

And frankly, if a person is taking the time to spell a curse word, they obviously aren't creating something on topic. There are many more words of a descriptive nature that are much more valid and useful then any curse word you can think of.

I think the filter is fine, and having the ability to turn it on or off seems pretty useless. What more can you get out of a persons argument or post if you can see censored words?

Posted by: Doctor Worm
Why don't members have a button that can turn off the blam filter?
