Either this idea is new, or totally underrepresented, and it's not going to get noticed in other threads, so please don't lock this thread, Jim. Oh, and, read the whole thing to see if it's new please.

Here's the idea, in several parts.

Part I:

The Ark is not an Ark in the sense of Noah's Ark. See, look at the names: Ark. Covenant.......It's the Ark of the Covenant! Like from Indiana Jones! So it's not about saving people like with Noah's Ark, it's about killing those who are greedy and stupid enough to look for it and think they can tame it (that is, the Covenant).

Part II:

In Halo 1, we all remember how Cortana really got a sweet high off of all the knowledge that she got from the Halo ring, when she was stuck in the control center. For those of us who read the books, we all remember in the last one (Between games 1 and 2, I forget the title) how she temporarily fought against a Covie AI that had made a crapload of copies of iteself, and was all degraded with time and poor copying skills.

Part III:

At the end of Halo 2, as we all remember, Cortana is facing the Gravemind.

Part IV:

Frankie mentioned that we will see Cortana "in some form or another."

Part V:

Here's where it all comes together. Cortana knows what the Ark is (and that'll kill those who open it, just like in Indiana Jones). Not only that, but Cortana has beefed herself up with data and copies, and has actually become part of Halo Delta (and possibly all of the Halos). This would give her both the ability to talk to Chief despite the great distance between them, and the knowledge of the Ark, and that that thing on Earth will kill everyone.

Also, her comment that "I have defied Gods and Demons" points to more religious allegory, thus reinforcing the theory that the Ark is that same Ark of the Covenant. It also builds the idea that she has become super-powerful, powerful enough to control the Halos, or see the future (as she so boldy claims)....

The Ark of the Covenant then truly lives up to its name by annihilating.............The Covenant. And no one else.

How? Cortana. She uses the thing both to eliminate the excavation fleet that is in immediate proximity to the Ark, and then, using her weaponizing brilliance (that we saw in the last book, where she focused Covenant plasma weaponry to entirely new levels of precision and power), she uses it to annhilate the hostile Covenant fleet.

Thus, the trailer shows the Ark opening up, but this theory of Cortana as Halo-weilding being of godlike power provides a way for the creators to get around the fact that it woud kill the Chief and all other humans in the galaxy.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

One thing is wrong, Cortana is quite a distance away....

Lol. I guess you're right, but it does kind of get unified into one big mondo-theory.

And as to that other guy, yeah, I know Cortana is a long ways away. That's the whole point. She's on Halo Delta, controlling it, a part of it, with godlike power. I mean, how else can she transmit to the Chief if she can't use Halo's super-luminal messaging system (As described by 343 at the end of Halo 2)

Eagle 117, Wra7hofAchilles, chaplain and myself all came up with a (much more detailed) 7000 post theory about the Halos, their ultimate functions and the possiblility of an Ark BEFORE Halo 2 came out. Eagle actually got a letter from Sketch because we hit on the Ark, and he asked us to halt the theory from the forum and go to a group.

So this idea, is at least 2 years old.

Well, yes, the Ark of the Covenant part, anyway, but what about the rest?

I think its not the biblical ark of the covanant because they carried that around Jerhico in the Bible but it is something simaler to the Ark (in purpose)

Besides, I should add that I doubt I'd ever actually hit on anything that would really come up in the game, I just like to speculate for fun. I mean, taking an internet forum about Halo too seriously, well, what'd be the point? I just wanted to take things off the beaten path a bit, more towards ridiculously grandiose, stupidly speculative and unfounded theories. Because that's where the fun is. Reading waaaaaay too much meaning into Halo is like my favorite pastime (next to playing Halo)

Yeah.

I didn't mean it's literally the Ark of the Covenant, although I was rather unclear on that one point. But, yeah, in purpose.

So why don't you outline your ridiculously grandiose theory that you and your friends came up with for us? I'm sure we'd all love to hear it. Plus it would add to the overkillness of the whole thread (which is kind of the idea here)

un problemo:

how do you know cortana is facing the gravemind?

if you listen to cortana's conversations during the High Charity levels, i get the impression that it's not gravemind, and it's not another covie AI, it's something she's never seen or felt before. and she HAS seen the gravemind, as she was with MC when he was with the gravemind...

now take into account where they are, High Charity. What is HC? a forerunner ship.

now what do most if not all ships upto this point have?

An AI. put the two together and i believe you have a forerunner AI. Which still works fine with your theory. With knowledge gained from the firsthand source, the forerunner, cortana realizes the true nature of the Ark. you indiana jones idea is irrelevant. The covenant are just misguided. they thought the halo rings were good, turned out that if they had gotten them working everything everywhere would be dead. same with the ark. it's just the big kahuna weapon.

i have a theory similar to yours in some ways that got locked b/c i didn't know bungie went all kung-fu on bumping (you really almost have to in this forum...) i think i'll repost it...

That makes a lot of sence. I would think Cortana becomes more powerfull, and probably became in some way or form solid. If not that, I think the reason she was so distorted in her transmission was because she had to use High Charity's technological advancements and pieces of her own code to transmit far enough to reach MC.

But back to your thoughts, that has to be the farthest in, I've ever read or seen in my life. I don't think anyone would have thought through to Indiana Jones with Halo.

Away from XBOX LIVE until both Doom 4 and Bungie's new game are released. The Flood will consume you.

It sounds so interesting, but its too convenient. Even if Cortana new what the ark is, Bungie shouldn't render the rings helpless under the control of an A.I. construct.

That's another possibility, that she merged with a Forerunner AI. Although she definitely does face the Gravemind at the end of Halo 2 (remember the end scence after the credits?). But, then again, I think that the Gravemind may itself be a Forerunner, but a Forerunner that had been corrupted by the Flood, but, due to being awesomely powerful, was able to maintain its intelligence. And perhaps the Gravemind is working to control the Flood, or direct them to a good purpose, but that's another theory entirely.

That is the STUPIDEST idea I have ever heard. First of all in the video Gravemind is controlling Cortana. You can obviously distinctivley here his voice. and Second AHH!

OK......I guess you missed my posts talking about how wild speculation is fun and not to take Halo forums too seriously. Sheesh.

Also, who's to say the Gravemind isn't controlling her so much as working with her? Or that that voice isn't the Gravemind's, but some other AI's?
