Hypothetical situation.

I make a thread in the H3 forum saying the rules, showing many o the fake h3 photo's out there, showing where the stickies are. Some of the rules. Stuff like that. Basically a guide to make it easier for newer members in the H3 forum.

But I get boo'd of sorts and many people say I can't do it because I'm not a moderator.

So I'm starting to think that only a moderator is allowed by other normal members to help people out.

What do ou think? Are people going a little to crazy with the "You are not a moderator so don't help others" thing?

  • 05.15.2006 10:21 PM PDT

its normal. Called being a forum cop. Most member's go through that stage at some point of time. Though really its just a member wanting to help out the community. However, if anything of the such were to be done, i'd suggest doing it here first, for safety purposes. For you, mainly.

And yes, the mod's do have a sort of 'sage-esqueness' to them. Basically anyone with a custom avatar, really. If they post it, its pretty much law to most users, but then again, most user's aren't hardened veteran's like most of the septagonians (sic). And most of them aren't nearly mature enough to handle another user trying to make things better...i tell you its hard.

Respect is earned, though the custom avatar is shiny...

People don't like being told to do things (or not do things) by people who are their equals (or appear to be their equals). However, if someone is their better (or seems to be), they are more likely to pay attention and heed the wise advice. Naturally some people will break away from this (as always), but if you were to ever watch any forum where rules are broken a lot (particularly Zanzibar before it was deleted, or the Underground before the Halo 3 forum was created), you'll see that people who try to help out by pointing out rule infractions are not exactly greeted with open arms. (I myself have made a few enemies.) It's always going to happen. If you want to help out, you have to do little things (making threads about spam is never a good idea), and ignore the people who tell you to stop (unless those people are moderators, in which case you are doing something wrong).

So it would seem the worst possible thing to do is create a thread trying to help others. Odd how that works. Man, it must be hard for the moderators to keep the h3 forum in order.

i salute them.

That would be off topic in the H3 forum. I would be afraid to post any fake h3 photos after Shishka's sticky.

The "Do"s and "Don't"s of a member are different than those of a moderator. There is a basic guide to being an okay Forum Cop (or whatever name you wish to apply to the people who help out), but it is complicated, and in the end one must learn on their own. The mods once had some helpful tips on how one should act if they wish to help out in the forums, and I'm sure they do still.

Rule #1: You're a member, not a machine.

Neo says otherwise.

Tips on how to help. this would be nice. Maybe we can get them to post again.

if anything, when you have a good idea for doing something with a forum, like the halo3 forum for instance, just pm a mod about it. No need to make a national crisis of it, unless your out for glory. In which case, don't bother, because you won't get it.

The problem is sounding smug, condescending, or sanctimonious with it... or at least appearing to.

I remember a kid that was the best forum cop out there. He went by the name 0825tab. He was loved by some, and hated by many. If you find him, he will help you.

You must never create a "rules" thread, as it is off-topic. If you find somebody violating the rules, report them to a moderator.

Bungie listens to its fans! ^.^ | Ninja .II./ You
RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

"Z0mG, you aernt an mod so STFU!"

I get that occasionally. As said before, there are dos and don'ts to being a forum cop... Maybe there should be a sticky in here. =)

You'll find, however, that you won't get the above kind of responses if you're polite and informative when responding to threads...

For instance, if someone posted this in Optimatch:
Posted by: NewUser001
Subject: Is the structure in the trailer a big greenhouse?
I was looking at it and it looks like solar panels so maybe it's Forerunners growing humans and Flood like a big greenhouse!

A constructive response would be this:
Posted by: ForumCop0001
That's an interesting theory! However, you may find that you'll get more responses in the Halo 3 Forum, as this is off-topic here: Optimatch is for discussion of Halo 2 playlists for multiplayer.
There are also a number of other theory threads over in the Halo 3 Forum, be sure to check them out! =)

Where an innapropriate response would be this:
Posted by: ForumCop0002
This is off-topic. Read the rules or you'll get banned.

I see some people doing the latter, and it's not helpful. It's hostile, holier-than-thou and practically flaming... Most people do the former though, which is nice to see. =)

There are a couple of other things, such as:
* If someone has posted a response to an off-topic thread (for instance) like the first response above, there's no need to post a similar response, just let the thread sink down the pages.
* If someone's spamming, telling them to stop probably won't accomplish anything; PM a mod or use the Gmail address to inform them of the spammer.
* Try not to be condescending... It defeats the purpose of giving help to New Members.
* If a specific person is doing something wrong, use the PM system and be polite!

Posting rules threads etc. is the job of Moderators, not normal members. Unless you get permission from a mod, those kinds of thread are likely to technically be off-topic; it is also somewhat arrogant, as it's almost saying that the mods aren't doing their job correctly. Or something. =)

Hehheh... Forum Cop Cop... =P

nicely said saint. Of course, there's no reason to sing praises to them, just saying that it belongs elsewhere and giving them a link is really good enough.

and that isn't being a forum cop, just a good member. a forum cop would be the second thing you said. its like saying that your gonna arrest them, but you have no handcuff's, car, badge, or gun. Pretty useless.

Not really. PMing someone to tell them how the forums work, where certain stuff is, pretty much what you said you'd do in the thread... That's fine. Posting that in an existing thread if there are one or two people who are confused, that's great.

Making an entire thread about it... What makes you think that people will look at it any more than they do the stickies? Making threads about the rules is where you cross into mod territory.

It is also humorous that any member who creates a thread pertaining to rules is violating the very rules that they are defending in the off-topic thread.

It's also funny, that someone who strives to uphold all of the rules, and preaches ad nauseum all of the rules in this forum, posts a bit of off-topic spam and it gets locked.

Can someone say hypocrite?

... I can.

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

One question: if people don't read the stickies already, then why would they read your FAQ thread about the stickies and rules?

People are reading into my post too much. I said it was a hypothetical situation, not that I actually did it. I have seen people do it, thats the only reason I posted this.
