Subject: Halsey's Escort to Castle Base

I was playing the package the other day (because its my favorite level because other than the first ten minutes of TLNoS and WC its really the only level where you are a a team fighting a hoard) and realized something when watching the final cut-scene about Jun's purpose escorting Halsey, but i need some fan opinions besides my (obviously biased) own.

here is the convo
Carter: Dr. Halsey, Noble 3 will escort you to Castle Base
Halsey: I require no escort commander
Carter: Jun, make sure NOTHING falls into enemy hands
Jun: I'll do what's necessary, sir.

Ok so my thoughts on this is that Carter is basically saying "waste Halsey if you guys are about to get captured and there is no other alternative" with Jun's response is basically saying "if i have to kill her i'll kill her". This is further backed by the The Package mini-movie where 117 and a few others are sent to retrieve Halsey, and the dude briefing them tells chief that if they don't make it in time (i think it was like 5 minutes or something) then they will be forced to destroy all of them to ensure Halsey isn't interrogated...

so basically, i think that the only reason Carter sent Jun to escort Halsey was because he wanted to make sure somebody would be there to kill her if she risked capture (aside from the obvious reasoning of protecting her, the killing her bit would only be a last resort)

what do you guys think?

oh and i forgot to add that Carter was also implying that Jun would also need to destroy himself and his armor as well if they risked capture, to prevent the covenant from getting their hands on the suit technology.

it was really the way he said it that made me believe all this, how much emphasis he placed on the "nothing"

I think the whole reason the event happened was because Reach's screenwriter wanted everyone in Noble to die by the end of Reach for some stupid reason.

So he made Jun just go out of the picture and not have to worry about it again.

but then why not just have Halsey have a separate escort that's not a SPARTAN (i mean they did have other people there, like the people that handled the destruction of the dig site) and just have had Jun die in the package?

My point exactly.

That's not conflicting. They didn't want to work their brains too hard so they just made Jun go away rather than make an overly elaborate way of killing him off. Plus, they wanted to make you feel important and awesome all by yourself at the end.

You know this is interesting and even if it is not the point of the screenwriter in the beginning it can be used, get this on halowaypoint and they may add, an interesting plot and it will make reach feel better.

I agree, the Spartans would definatley adhere to the Cole protocall and destroy anything that could lead to Earth if it fell into the enemies hands....inculding themselves and those around them. No question in my mind that killing himself and Halsey were part of his mission directives, if they happened to be captured.

Wait, there was doubt regarding this? I thought it was pretty obvious what Carter meant by that.

It's the only logical explanation, or else both of their lines are really eccentric given the situation.

In Halo: First Strike, Halsey mentions to the newly arrive Spartans at Castle that she had an escort to the base, but he died. That's all she says about him. She doesn't say if he was a Spartan or not. She just says it in passing. But now at this point, it's obvious that the writers are going with the idea that Jun was the dead escort.

And this quote was present in the original First Strike which was released in 2003, eight years before Jun was present in any sort of media, so I doubt that.

What a waste....

When she says "I need no escort" I think she's actually saying "I can do it myself if need be."

Sheila died prior to Reach. Remember when she said 3 spartans had died? I'm pretty sure Sheila was among them.

Down with Ulfric the killer of kings!
On the day of your death we will drink and we'll sing
We're the children of Skyrim
And we fight all out lives
And when Sovngarde beckons, every one of us dies

I can understand killing themselves but up to that point the Covenant didn't really take prisoners. So was there really a risk in that?

Furthermore why destroy the suit? The shields on the Spartan armor were inspired by Jackal arm shields. Elites already had personal shields (I believe) and of course the cruisers had their shields. So really there's no real risk in them being captured or any tech being gained from them, unless Halsey had some cool Forerunner stuff on her.

"This is the prototype NOVA Bomb, nine fusion warheads encased in lithium triteride armor. When detonated, it compresses its fusionable material to neutron-star density, boosting the thermonuclear yield a hundredfold. I am Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb, temporarily in command of the UNSC military base Reach. To the Covenant uglies that might be listening, you have a few seconds to pray to your damned heathen gods. You all have a nice day in hell..."

On the subject of risk assessment, when personnell are captured if its not the tech, then it would be the information that could be gained, forced or tortured out of a subject.

Think of how much they knew about earth and ONI and UNSC's secrets. Cole protocal would not have allowed that kind of information to leak in any way.

If there was a risk that this information could get out, then the spartans and Halsey would know that there was only one way to guarantee that they could not be broken...

Falling upon ones own sword rather than betray those who have fought by your side. Spartans, honorable, even in death.

I know I know.

But like I said. How often were Spartans captured? Let alone ANY human. Don't forget the Prophets said that humans were unholy and they all needed to be whiped out.

Lets not forget glassing every planet after they basically kill everyone on it already.
Forgive me but I think it would have been just as easy to say Carter was telling Jun to protect Halsey at any cost (it's pretty easy to assume Jun died protecting Halsey) and Halsey said she didn't need protection and that she would of rathered Jun protect Cortana rather than her.
