I couldn't help but notice that some folks wished for a sniper rifle that would allow one to engage targets the length of the board. More power to you. Wishes and wishing for things is a very natural part of life. This being said, it should be noted that human weaponry, and to some extent Covenant weaponry, pretty much conforms to the actual physics that apply to the real world. I personally like the realism that Bungie imparts to the weapons in Halo.

In our world, we have a pretty interesting weapon out there called the Barrett. This weapon is a .50 caliber sniper rifle. It comes in many flavors and in all forms is a highly formidable piece of military technology. Coincidently, or not so coincidently, the sniper rifle in the Halo Universe is also a .50 cal.

For the sake of the argument, let's say that in Halo 3 there is a sniper rifle that would fire the length of the board. Poof and tada you have a super weapon (pun intended here). Ok now that you have said uber sniper rifle, let's talk the physics and practice of shooting. We've seen that boards in Halo can be rather large no? So, this would bring up point one, being able to visualize and get a sight picture on your intented grunt or other nefarious Covie to cap. Think of it this way, what sniper scope made or could be made could allow one to view a target at over 10+ miles away. In our world the maximum range that has been documented on a sucessful engagement with a sniper rifle is around 1 mile.

Next up to consider, windage. This is how much you have to adjust your now all powerful scope and rifle to account for the direction of the wind. Imagine having to adjust for wind whilst engaging a hopping elite at over 4+ miles. Bringing me to another point: Leading your target. Again visualize the hopping elite doing their duck and cover, range and rover routine that they do. Now think of having to lead a target at such distances. One would quite literally have to be the most incredible shooter in the world to make this shot.

I have not mentioned other variables in shooting such as deflection, angle of trajectory, breathing, recoil, weapon stability, position the shooter is in eg sitting, offhand, kneeling or prone etc etc etc. All of the afore mentioned things that shooters in the real world have to deal with. Learn to account for and adjust to accordingly. In our world it can take someone years to become proficient with a weapon as powerful and useful as the Barrett. In a video game world, one can become an expert shot in short order without ever having to deal with 90% of what actually goes into shooting. The computer does it for you, eg windage etc...all you have to do is target then lead your leaping and lunging elite. Make sense?

Okay, I've read some really stupid things since the confirmation of Halo 3. People wan't everything and anything. Please take into account one simple thing.

+ This is Halo, not real life.

I've seen people say they want hundreds of weapons. It won't work sorry to let you down but it's a stupid idea.

Prone position more than likely will not work please think about it from a perspective of, your getting killed by the proned play and not the other way around.

Snipers to shoot the length of the map. As soon as this is implemented people are gonna cry that whoever has the sniper wins the game. Even though you say that it controls big maps already. You for some reason want it more game changing?

Very destructable levels. The 360 probably doesnt have the ability to do this, especially if Halo 3 looks as good and is as vast as shown. Even if it does it will not work, lets destroy all the buildings with a rocket so the time spent on the map is deemed a waste of time. Small amounts of destructabilty could work well.

Playing as Grunt's, Brute's, Jackel's etc. That's just stupid, I'm sure a grunt, with no technology other than it's weapon to protect it would be any help in a game against MC.

The old pistol. It was removed for a reason, imagine it online, and you dont have one.

There are alot more but these are just some that spring to mind, if you don't agree with me I don't care because you're wrong.

Gasp! Someone with a good opinion? I think this forum is slowly improving.

we get it, halo is not real life, people who suggest snipers that can snipe for miles are stupid. people who want flash bang grenades and smoke grenades are misguided - its halo not ghost recon!!! proone would not work. this guy knows what he is talking about - and to discredit his entire rant because he said people who didnt agree with him is stupid. he is still right, it just so happens he was pissed at the world for being so stupid, and didnt care at the point in time if people argued or disagreed because they happened to be wrong.

so to conclude, he is right, and anyone who disagrees is retarted :-)

Here are my suggestsions for Halo 3:

Legend:
CAPS – Must Be Implemented
Italics – Cool If Implemented
Normal – Oh Well If Not Implemented

What Made Halo 1 Special: Ideas

Special Weapons – the weapons in Halo 1 were all special and all had there functions. Each type of weapon had a alien and human counterpart. Human weapons were more accurate and had longer range; however, they needed to be reloaded and were not so effective against shielded opponents and plasma shields. Alien weapons depleted shields faster, never needed to be reloaded and temporary paralyzed their opponents, but suffered from overheating after prolonged use and had a shorter range (or needed to be aim ahead of there targets at long range). This made the choice between alien or human weapons fun as they own had there own distinct, but fair use. Furthermore, every weapon has a distinct mode of use and situation in which its true power can be harnessed, and in that situation, the weapons simply put, kicked ass. This, in turn, made the weapon fun to use, and worth picking up. In halo 2, however, there are some weapons which are redundant copies of another weapon in the game. Other weapons are so crappy they are never worth picking up (though none of the weapons are so strong that they are the only weapon worth having, like the pistol from halo 1). If every weapon has a purpose and a strategy in which it can be used effectively, then the game will be really fun and will take longer to get bored from as there will be more weapons and strategies to play around with – more variation – instead of one well-rounded, kick ass combo that cannot be beat.

Vehicles – Halo 1 was probably the first game to include vehicles in multiplayer. However, vehicles in halo 1 differ from vehicles in halo 2 in one aspect – how much damage it takes for them to be destroyed. Like in the halo 1 campaign, vehicles should have a certain amount of health and be destroyed when that health is used up; as a result, the passengers of that vehicle are shielded from most of the damage that the vehicle takes. Passengers, nevertheless, can be shot at directly from inside the vehicle and absorb the full bulk of that damage. In this way, vehicles act as a shield for its passengers.

Gameplay

Customizability – all that needs to be done here is add as much customizability to each game type as possible – for instance, the ability to individually select vehicles and weapons available. In addition, to customize whether the weapons respawn based on time or someone carrying it.

Abilities

Powerups – in addition to invisibility, and overshields, players should be able to pick up Powerups which allow them to jump higher, run faster, double damage, shoot faster, or slow down time for them. Some of these Powerups may make the game to Unreal-Tournament-like, and therefore, should not be included at the discretion of Bungie.
SPECIAL ABILITY BUTTON – THE WHITE BUTTON SHOULD BE USED TO GIVE THE PLAYER A TEMPORARY SPECIAL ABILITY IN MULTIPLAYER AS WELL AS CAMPAIGN. FOR INSTANCE, PLAYERS COULD CHOOSE BETWEEN TEMPORARY INVISIBILITY, OVERSHIELDS, EXTRA STRENGTH ETC… ONE AGAIN, SOME OF THE ABILITIES MIGHT DEVIATE FROM THE MOOD OF THE GAME AND SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED. THE RADIO WOULD BE A DIFFERENT BUTTON.
SET NAV POINTS – ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SET NAV POINTS FOR ONES TEAMMATES IN MULTIPLAYER AND CAMPAIGN MODE. THIS WOULD BE USEFUL WHEN THERE IS AN ENEMY IN A HARD TO DESCRIBE LOCATION OR FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT POSSESS MICROPHONES. NOTE: THE NAV POINT WOULD NOT “STICK” TO AN ENEMY; IT WOULD SIMPLY BE THE PIECE OF GROUND UNDER THE RETICULE WHEN THE LOCATION IS TARGETED.
FIST FIGHTS – PLAYERS HAVE LONG WANTED TO HAVE FIST FIGHTS. TO IMPLEMENT THIS, THE B BUTTON COULD BE HELD DOWN TO DROP THE CURRENT SINGLE WIELDED WEAPON TO EXPOSE ONLY FISTS. MAYBE, IN THIS MODE, YOU COULD THROW TWO GRENADES AT ONCE, WHICH MIGHT MAKE THIS STATE OF BEING MORE USEFUL? OR MAYBE A RIGHT HANDED MELEE PUNCH WOULD BE MORE POWERFUL THAN THE NORMAL LEFT ONE (LIKE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MELEEING WITH THE PLASMA PISTOL). \
Quick Switch Button – when in the warthog passenger seat, there should be a button that allows you to quickly climb over into the driver seat. Likewise, when dual wielding, there should be a button that allows you to rotate the weapons in your hands – from right to left, or from your reserve to your secondary weapon (maybe the sideways button to switch hands and the other sideways button to take out your stock weapon).

Current/New Weapons

Plasma Pistol – Shot normally, it is clearly a weak weapon. However, its charged blast allows strategic use to both counter over-shielded opponents as well as dual wielding possibilities. It should be temporarily paralyzing as it is a plasma weapon.
Plasma Rifle – A more powerful version of the plasma pistol, it is the standard alien weapon. It can be dual wielded and has a few prime combos. It should also be temporarily paralyzing.
Brute Plasma Rifle – a more powerful, but faster shooting and therefore faster overheating copy of the normal plasma rifle, it makes almost no difference in a battle. Delete.
Covenant Carbine – Redundant weapon. It should be deleted.
Beam Rifle – A good alternative to the human sniper for people who don’t want to have to reload and can hit their targets the first time around. Other than that, it’s the same.
BRUTE SHOT – IT IS USELESS AND CRAPPY WEAPON. TOO MAKE IT BETTER, IT SHOULD BE MODIFIED TO FIRE STICKY PLASMA GRENADES AT HIGH VELOCITY SO THAT STICKING OPPONENTS/VEHICLES AT LONG RANGES IS EASIER. IN ADDITION, IT COULD ALSO FIRE FRAG GRENADES AT SUCH A HIGH VELOCITY, THEY EXPLODE ON IMPACT. BOTH OF THESE THINGS WOULD ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR IT TO HAVE A STRONG MELEE ATTACK. REGULAR HAND GRENADES WOULD BE USED AS AMMO, WHICH WOULD HAVE TO BE LOADED IN AT ONE GRENADE AT A TIME (OR MAYBE NOT).
Needler – as many others have said, its bullets should travel at higher velocity or you should have some special ability when wielding two needlers or its needles should stick to vehicles which would make it a great anti-vehicle weapon which would make it worth picking up.
Energy sword – a good weapon overall. The ability to carry a second weapon (or jackal shield) would be cool, but for the purpose of weapons balance, you wouldn’t be able to lunge at opponents (at least not from the same distance – maybe half?). In addition, holding down/tapping b would throw the sword like 30 ft for a kill (this would satisfy people who want hunting knives) instead of a melee attack?
Laser Beam Thingy – a crappy weapon; either delete or put a scope on it and make it more powerful.
Human Pistol – more fair in Halo 2, it is still good dual wielded and allows for some interesting combos.
SMG – this weapon is well balanced. However, it doesn’t make sense that mc can suppress the enormous recoil caused by the sniper rifle, but he cannot hold down two smgs firing fully-automatically.
Battle Rifle – a good weapon and more fair version of the old pistol, it is still a single wieldable weapon, and as such, should be more powerful than dual wieldable weapons. It should be fully automatic and maybe be a little bit weaker to compensate. However, keep in mind that even if fully automatic, it wouldn’t be so easy to keep the enemy in the crosshairs of this weapon.
Shotgun – it should be reset to its original strength and range as in Halo 1.
Rocket Launcher – its rocket’s speed should be increased to Halo 1; however, its tracking ability should be less accurate, so as to be dodge-able by vehicles such as the ghost and warthog in open spaces.
Sniper Rifle – Perfect the way it is. The night vision isn’t really necessary.
JACKAL SHIELD – THIS SHOULD BE A WIELDABLE WEAPON, WITH A MELEE ATTACK OPTION WHEN WIELDED ALONE. WHEN DUAL WIELDED WITH ANOTHER WEAPON, PRESSING THE CORRESPONDING TRIGGER RAISES THE SHIELD TO PROTECT THE HEAD AND FACE FROM THE FRONT, HOWEVER, IT BLOCKS THE ABILITY TO SHOOT AND BLURS THE VISION (AS YOU HAVE TO LOOK THROUGH A COLORED SHIELD). IN ADDITION, ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO WIELD TWO SHIELDS AS THIS WOULD CREATE NEW TACTICS IN TEAM PLAYING SUCH AS DEFENDING THE FLAG CARRIER ETC…YOU MAY ALSO BE ABLE TO MELEE ATTACK WHILE WIELDING TWO SHIELDS, DEPENDING ON THE IN-THE-END WEAPONS BALANCE. THIS WOULD ALSO INCREASE THE STRENGTH OF SINGLE WIELDED WEAPONS.
Fuel Rod Gun – in its current state, it is perhaps an unfair weapon in multiplayer. To balance it, it should have to charge before firing, like the hunters’ fuel rods do in halo 1. Or you could make it like a green plasma hose, so that it’s hard to hit infantry, but easier to hit and take out vehicles, like the all-powerful tank.
JET PACK – ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE THE JET PACKS THAT THE ELITES USE IN HALO 2. OBVIOUSLY, IT WOULD HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF FUEL, AND, IF NEED BE, THE PERSON WEARING IT COULD MOVE SLOWER WHEN WALKING AROUND. HOWEVER, HE WOULD BE ABLE TO TRACKED AND LOCKED ONTO BY THE ROCKET LAUNCHER; IN WHICH CASE, HE WOULD HAVE TO MAKE A SUDDEN, LAST MINUTE JERK IN ONE DIRECTION TO DODGE IT. THE JET PACK WOULD ALSO TAKE THE PLACE OF THE RESERVE WEAPON. THUS, TAKING THE FLAG BACK WITH A JETPACK MEANS YOU HAVE NO WEAPON WHAT SO EVER SHOULD YOU HAVE TO BAIL OR RUN OUT OF FUEL.
(Frag) Grenades – frag grenades need to be re-strengthened to there halo 1 status. Even after the update, frag grenades have not reclaimed their old glory, and are mostly ignored. In addition, their original throwing range should be restored.

here are my suggestison for the vehicles:

Vehicles

Warthog – a perfectly fine vehicle – both with a normal machine gun turret, and the particle launcher – this is a well balanced vehicle. However, its gun has since been downgraded from halo 1; its past strength must be reinstituted.
Tank – clearly the most powerful vehicle, which makes it stupid to play with in conjunction with smaller vehicles, as it will dominate. To undo this, the driver should be visible from the front, like in halo 1, so he can be sniped out with accurate guns. It should still, however, be very strong and difficult to destroy. The ability to drive in one direction and aim the turret in another direction is excellent. Furthermore, modifications to current weapons would make it easier to destroy so it wouldn’t dominate as easily (see fuel rod gun, brute shot).
Helicopter – as many people before me have requested, the humans should have there own version of a flying transport vehicle, preferably one than can carry many passengers, and hover – a helicopter. However, as is the case, the helicopter’s natural weakness would be its propellers.
Pelican – unlike everyone else, I don’t think the pelican should be available for multiplayer (its ok if it’s in campaign) as it is too powerful. It would also detract from the original idea of the game. The only way it should make it into halo 3 is if it’s in a huge level (like 5 times the size of waterworks). Otherwise, it would easily dominate.
Ghost – this vehicle is perfectly fine the way it is except for one thing – its plasma guns need to temporarily paralyze.
Banshee – in addition to requiring this vehicle’s guns to temporarily paralyze like every other plasma weapon, its mortar secondary fire needs to be returned. Even though this vehicle would dominate infantry armed with weaker, non-explosive weapons, it is pretty fair to make this vehicle kill infantry and force them to use vehicles or explosive weapons. As it is, the plasma cannons are quite difficult to aim at a distant or even close enemy.
Wraith – a balanced weapon, as long as it has the booster that allows it to run over nearby opponents (otherwise, it’s too weak against close range enemies). The plasma guns that fire in single player which have been disabled in multiplayer is fair.
Specter – a death-trap of a vehicle whose gun is useless and is deflected off most other vehicles, this vehicle should either be removed or upgraded. Maybe it could either be made to fly, or fly only when it is in boost mode. In either case, its gun has to be upgraded. Maybe a scope could be added to it.

And nowwwww

these people that ask for stupid ideas might have a playlist just for them like a kinda be any character u like playlist i also think that bungie is known for its balanced gameplay so its not gunna throw it out the window for upgradable weaponds is it

Q. What do you get when you add 1 man, 1 car, and 1 rocket built for a jet?

A. A black smudge on the side of a cliff.

I think that the environments should be almost completely destrictible. For example, when they said "destructible environments" on halo 2, I thought you might be able to blow a hole throught the side of the base with the tank. I hope that with the massive levels Halo 3 promises that such desructible environments as above will be possible.

This is why everyone started with the pistol. Pshh, Halo 2 fanboys. People like you need to stop pretending that you have actually played competitive Halo 1 multiplayer. You probably have played it twice in your life. Now, you're going to reply like all the other Halo 2 fanboys with, "I played it all the time."

There are alot more but these are just some that spring to mind, if you don't agree with me I don't care because you're wrong

I didnt make this post to come accross as a nice guy, an arrogant guy, a god, a bad guy. I made it so that some people maybe a just a few would stop and think before they ask bungie to make upgradabel weapons that you can buy online or something like that. Stupid people in large groups are dangerous.

I agree with you about hundreds of weapons being ridiculous and completely destructible environments being stupid and pointless, but it really is only 10 year olds that want this stuff or believe it will be in the game.

The pistol bashing needs to end though. There are too many threads that bash the pistol. Stop beating a dead horse.

The pistol from Halo 1 was never that bad.

Besides it's clear that Bungie intended for the BR to be the H1 pistol of Halo 2 and that means with the release of H3 we will see a BR that actually suits that job ( except it will still take 4 shots to the head in order to kill an opponent ). And yes, it would be possible to have both the AR and the BR.

I agree with most of the things said.
However, the prone position is really that bad when you consider the amount of cheap stuff in Halo 2. Yeah, before you start crying hear me out.
Let's see, we've got the sword, that for some stupid reason gives you the magic ability to fly five feet forward, and instantly kill your enemy. Not only that, but if you actually use skill and use a sword how it would work in real life, ya know, up close, it takes two hits to kill the enemy. That's just stupid. It should be the other way around. Take the lunge out, or make it require two hits so it's so damn cheap to the point where it outmatches every gun in the game, even the shotgun, seeing as it has a shorter range than the sword (which is beyond stupidity) and doesn't always guarantee death unlike the sword, not only stupid, but unbalanced.
And the fact that the rocket launcher turned Warthogs into deathtraps impossible to walk away from. Yeah yeah, I know, the banshee would be completely overwhelming without lock-ons. Well, here's the solution, remove it! The banshee makes it completely unfair if the other team takes the rocket launcher, and it's near impossible to shoot down, if the pilot is intelligent. Also, the pilot can take the banshee to otherwise unreachable and all seeing areas, to where they dominate the game. It just makes everything bad. The easiest solution is to take it out. I mean, if you think prone position will unbalance thing, hell the banshee makes things twelve times worse than the prone position ever could.
BTW, don't geet me wrong, I love H1 and H2, I just these two things in H2.

Anyways, I agree with the lots of weapons thing. Too many weapons just complicate things.
Although, I don't really see why sniping across the map is a problem. Playing as Covenant is also dumb, and a waste of disk space and coding time that can be used for something better. We all know the Elite model sucks, all the others will just suck more, since they have no sheilds.

  • 05.17.2006 12:25 PM PDT

i still like the idea of being a rgunt in Mp if it was at the same strength level as everything else i hate sniping in all levels big and small and i think that if i could be the midget ass grunt i would be able to sneak around alot better plus it would just be funny imagine one of those goofy ass guys on live that joke around the whole time as a grunt come on itd be hilarious and besides adding the grunt and other characters into the mp games of halo 3 isnt really that much of a stretch
