If you've ventured into the Invasion playlist and you can't seem to enjoy playing it, chances are you don't understand how it works out. I'm hoping these basic tips will help open your mind just as they did for me when I learned them:
1. Play your fireteam role. If you're left fireteam, go left. If you're right fireteam, go right. If you're middle fireteam, you're going to need to run back and forth assisting the other two teams when they need it. So if there's a strategic push happening by the right team, that's where you'll go. This keeps the enemy team split up so their forces are decreased.
2. Use weapons to their effectiveness. Just because you don't like the AR it doesn't mean you should push it aside. AR teamshot kills Elites very quickly. Also, if you have picked up an NR stay back behind your other Elites while they weaken the spartans with plasma pistols and needlers. This way you clean up their kills and they can move in onto the territories.
3. Play to win, not for stats. Don't end up like the guy with a 3.0 k/d in Invasion who calls himself good. If you don't win the match it doesn't matter how many sprees you got with the sniper. The objective is to take the territories and capture the core. You are not going to always be the main slayer, and you are not going to always get that untouchable. Invasion at its core is a class-based gametype where playing your role is essential. If you go in trying to play it like normal Halo, you're doing it wrong.
4. Set up a forward position. Instead of trying to assassinate players coming up the stairs on Boneyard, sit on the stairs and wait for them to come forward so you can pistol them. Instead of sitting back at the territory on Breakpoint, move into the glacier. When you push forward you prevent them from even reaching the objective. And if you die at this forward position you respawn back at the objective by the time they get there. I've played games of spire and boneyard where the other team didn't even touch the territories. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to spawn kill them (which is pointless unless you care about lolStats in Reach).
5. Learn which loadouts work against each other. Stop complaining about shotgun campers in boneyard. Your problem is that you want to fight a shotgun guy up close with your sword, which is why you keep getting killed. The concussion rifle prevents them from even going into armor lock, so keep your distance and counter them with your other loadouts.
Invasion is the only default gametype in Reach that works as intended. This is because it was built for Reach and its sandbox elements; therefore, it showcases them perfectly. Invasion doesn't need any changes other than new maps and the relocation of a few spawns/vehicles on some of the maps. Once you learn how to play like I have, all of this becomes apparent.
I hope you venture into the playlist with an open mind. And if you don't like Invasion, then don't play it. It's not for everybody, just as Living Dead, Grifball, or MLG ain't for everyone.
Hope that helps :)
