it said that, but if you follow the numbers-
75 recieved the augmentation...
30 died from the sugery...
3 died in combat before reach...
30 were at reach, 27 went to the surface, 3 to the space dock...
21 of those spartans died at reach...
4 died after the main battle was over...
5 survived reach...
that leaves 2 unnacounted for..
but the book said 3 were too far away to be recalled im confused too
also the SPARTAN I & III programs were unaccounted for so there may be more SPARTANs jus not like the one we know
sorry if i messed up the numbers, i dont have the books to check right now but i do remember that the numbers dont match up
During the mission briefing for the "Capture a Prophet" Spartan mission, a "glitch" in the numbers occurs:
The Master Chief and two dozen other Spartans (25 total) were present
3 were reported to have died within the last decade
3 were too far away to be recalled
1 was too injured to continue active duty
That totals 32 Spartans. When you include Sam, who died right after getting the MJOLNIR armor, you have all 33 Spartans who survived the augmentation (or so it's assumed). Yet, during the events that occur as the Pillar of Autumn is leaving Reach on its mission, there are 30 Spartans present. Out of the 33 Spartans that survived the augmentation, there were 28 who were able to go on the mission: The Master Chief, the two dozen other Spartans at the briefing, and the 3 who were too far away to be recalled.
Now, the Pillar of Autumn didn't leave immediately after the mission briefing; Cortana had to be introduced to the Master Chief, the PoA had to finish its refit, etc. This means that when Dr. Halsey said 3 Spartans were too far away to be recalled, she was probably talking about being recalled to the briefing, but they arrive back in time for the mission itself. This would mean that there are two Spartans unaccounted for that went on the mission.
There are two possibilities for this. The first is probably the most practical, which is simply that the "two dozen" other Spartans wasn't exactly 24 Spartans. When the word "dozen" is used, oftentimes it is used as an estimate. If the "two dozen" was literally translated as 26 Spartans, then there could be a total of 30 who were able to go on the mission, which we know is what occured. Also, a "baker's dozen" is a count of 13, so if the author was being extra sneaky, then "two dozen" could be 26 Spartans, if he was using bakers' standards.
The other possibility, which goes hand-in-hand with the first possibility, is that two of the 3 who had died in the last decade were from the 12 Spartans who survived the augmentation but suffered side effects. This would leave 2 Spartans unaccounted for by Dr. Halsey, which can be explained by the "dozen" estimate.
