I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

According to this, Bungie has probably been working on Destiny for well over two years now. But the only information they have released on the project is a few logos and names, a new slogan, and the "star map." Is it normal for a dev to remain this dark for this long on its next project?

edit: obviously, there was probably some early planning going on back as far as 2008. I already took that into account.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Because this is probably the biggest project they have ever worked on. I wouldn't be surprised if the planning stage occurred before Halo 3.

Bungie likes keeping secrets.

Maybe, but it doesn't matter. If you rush a pregnancy unless you have to, you'll mess stuff up.

Destiny is a baby in utero in every. single. way.

I just want to know if it's a boy or a girl.

I knew Bungie was going to break life.

A perfectly good chance to link to me DPedia thread and you didn't. I am disappoint, Foman.

Blizzard's been working on for Diablo 3 for who knows how long. They also release their WoW expansions about once a year and they start working on them when the previous one is released, but usually don't reveal anything (unless it's leaked) until 3 to 6 months before the expected release.

So, if that's anything to base Bungie's actions on, 2 years doesn't seem like a very long time to be in the dark about something. As someone else said, I would guess they at the very least started thinking about this project more than 2 years ago.

I have seen you future

They've been working on Destiny for two years, but that doesn't mean that they have been working on it full swing for two years. I believe that the first stages are done with a very small team that is just laying the foundation for the game and universe to come. They already have another one going for something other than destiny which includes Marcus Lehto.

I said WELL OVER TWO YEARS. I didn't want to say four years like Duncan on Misriah Solutions implied because then someone would say it was probably just one dude tinkering around for a year-and-a-half before anything serious got under way. Destiny was probably in the planning stages for a long while. I chose not to include the early planning stages.

I wasn't really arguing the time frame all that much. I was suggesting that other developers spend quite a bit more time on their projects, especially if they believe it will be incredibly popular or they want to set a standard in quality.

And, they're usually in the dark for a good majority of it, unless things are leaked.

Tru7h. It was prost H3 and pre H:ODST before any mention of it - which was also the time they went to MS for the split if I'm not mistaken. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they're building upon the the infrastructure from H:R.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Normal development time is 3 years of full time work by an entire staff. Anything pre-Reach would likely have been small task forces, in my opinion, working out the big stuff, such as general story, game mechanic ideas, story boards, etc.
