Subject: Project: Little Billy - Posting and You!

@spawn031

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

So today I was eating my daily bagel, and I've figured out that here on Bungie.net, we're doing it wrong!

You see, when new accounts are created on Bungie.net, we limit their capabilities for 24 hours - no posting threads. While this helps cut down on spam for new questions, we should instruct them on how to go about their daily visits on Bungie.net.

Example Video

It's clear that the law is layed out for LIttle Billy here on how to post on the forums. Many people have this new idea to just start a new thread to ask their question. I think it would be wise for Bungie.net to follow suit in making walkthrough videos.

After all, we want to protect Little Billy from being made fun of for posting a repeat thread, or false information. Maybe after new users watch this video 7 times through, they will be able to post new threads on their desire.

it reminds me of getting hired for a new job, you must watch the walkthroughs to learn the "ifs" and "buts" of forum posting. After all, bnet is srs bziness and we want to make sure that everyone has the best experience in their time. I know that you want the same thing to happen.

Perhaps this community video should be made for Bungie.net and not use a Steam video - and be sent to users once they're banned? Just a thought.

That video was great. I'd love to see videos like this specifically tailored to Bnet, including guides on a range of site functions including forums and groups. As for when these should be made, I'd say we should wait for the "new hotness". Videos with the old site will just confuse newcomers.

Key

I think someone like Blink should make the videos. He seems appropriately disheartened by stupidity that he would make entertaining forum intro videos, to say the least.

It must be made like a fine mess, to be natural, unanticipated, awfully nice, better than new, funny without making them laugh and become an easy task.

It must be Bungie.

I think we as the community instead should undertake this project. We where once like Billy, so who better to tell Billy how not to be a moron?

I can see the new an improved community that a tutorial video like this would bring.

Now to disappear for another five months or so.

It'd be nice to have something like this. I'm sure that we (the Bungie.net community) can make one on our own.

As some of you guys already know, I feel like neogaf does it best. You're lucky if you get activated within 6 months (plenty of time to read the rules) and generally 1 mistake is a ban (unless your a jr in which case it's permanent). It really forces all members to read and understand the rules.. or just tempts them from acting like a complete jackass most of the time.

It's a bit harsh, especially for a specific game forum, but it's a proven method. Just like getting a speeding ticket will make you drive slower.. at least for a while.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

What a lolsy video. But I'm sure Bungie could do one much funnier, especially considering all of the memes that we've started.

This would be a good idea except that the majority of users who post stuff unawares of the rules are people with old accounts that they only just started using. How many new members have you seen this site gain? Not that many in recent months.

That was Plan B. Have everyone wait to become members in batches like NeoGAF. I was discussing this with TU the other day and I happen to be lucky in that I was accepted only 6 weeks after I put in my app.

Extreme cases either way, fortunately forcing users to read the rules over and over again until they have them near memorized isn't only punishable, it's repetitive. I like it.

No way should we do it the way GAF does it. Bungie wants people here. They have a vested interest in the fans.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

-blam!- the way GAF does it. I don't know how many times I "applied" over the years and still got rejected.

They should at least be warned that when you join Bungie.net, there is no turning back.

Yeah as I said, it's a bit harsh for a specific game forum. But trust me, Gaf needs their members as much if not more than this forum does. Gaf isn't making a killing on game sells. They survive with ads and those only exist because of the members there that see them.

Having the strict rules allows the members to have some ownership in their accounts there and you hardly ever see suicide or spam accounts. Yeah it happens, but of course not nearly as frequent as it does here. You guys have been more than capable handling it in the past so it's really not an issue and probably won't be moving forward.
