How did they work, what did they do? What ranked above what?

Living in the past is a luxury none
of us can afford. We must learn from
it, but we cannot live there. It is
impossible to plan for the now
the present is ever fleeting. The
future is where we must live the
future is what we must plan for.

Waypoint Moderators aren't really Moderators, just power hungry and its goal is defend their beloved Halo at all costs. (Meaning that they wank Halo too much.)

BS Angel is alleged foe so, be wary of Waypoint and its moderators! Do not attempt to move to Waypoint. Enter your own risk.

*WARNING* IT IS MY OPINION.

Read Cryptum, bro.

The Forerunner had a caste system, and multiple rankings within each caste.

The Builder caste was the highest caste, they were responsible for all the Forerunner's steller/intersteller engineering awesomness.
The Master Builder, known as Faber, was their leader. He was a trecherous power-hungry individual.

It's not entirely clear how many castes there were, but there were also Lifeworker caste, (Biologists, concerned with the Mantle as it applies to living things) The Librarian was the formost Lifeworker, holding the title of "Lifeshaper".

A mining caste, little is known about them, but they provide the materials to the Builder caste.

And the millitary caste the Caste of Warrior-Servants.
This caste was reduced in standing by the Master Builder after The Didact (leader of the Warrior-Servants) opposed his plans to build the Halo array. The Didact preffered a more lengthy and costly, but ultimately less destructive, containment plan for the Flood.
The Master Builder's mistakes ensured he could not use that strategy however.

Within castes the Forerunner are of different forms, based on how many (ritualised) mutations their bodies have gone through, each mutation/transformation increases a Forerunner's abilities in a certain area, in general, intelligence/information handling capacity goes up with each transformation as well.

All high rate Forerunner have vastly augmented mental capabilities compared to those of lower rate.

For example The Didact is a Promethian, highest form of a Warrior Servant, he is capable of seeing a battle through thousands of different viewpoints and making sense of it all, as well as maintaining multiple streams of consciousness, and has a crazy ability to multitask.

Forerunner children (of the Builder Caste at least) are known as Manipulars, and somewhat resemble tall humans. They are about as smart as a human as well, with no particularly esoteric capabilities.

Builders

Miners

Lifeworkers

Warrior-Servants

Engineers

Those are ranks from top to bottom. But indeed there are higher rates within these.
