Subject: Dear Golden Septagon, I Hate You

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

But the Golden Septagon loves you...

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

I like their pointless spam. It proves that they actually have a sense of humor, and it's always hilarious when Achronos derails a thread on purpose. Kind of like a fireman setting a house on fire.

I laughed.

It's interesting to see a thread complaining that Bungie is posting too much. Ironic, really. Even before "the darkness," people were clamoring to get Bungie employees to be more active.

Yes, this is quite amusing.

Its like Reach. People were whining that they wanted all this stuff, then once they finally got it, they whined about having it. You can never please everybody.

The employees posting like regular people isn't the problem.

It is the gotta quote the ninja (and mods), hey notice me - notice me, forum tryhards that are annoying and spamtastic.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

Thanks for the clarification, I do think that would be a neat feature.

  • 02.01.2012 10:17 AM PDT

I know what you mean, O Sharp One. The thread derailment gets annoying too. They should have an option to mark each post they make as an "official" post, so that the threads will get the septagon when they need it, but they can still post the spam they love to without being annoying.

  • 02.01.2012 10:17 AM PDT

It's possible that employees are already posting without the gold text.. just sayin' :)

Yeah, it gets annoying when a thread turns into "Lets see who can quote Achronos the most!"

Basically, I make the best topics ever.

Feedback!
Duardo: This thread is locked for being stupid.
cortana 5 : It's perpetually my time of the month and I'm just grouchy.
Foman: I see absolutely no reason, either theoretical or practical, that this is not a superb idea. Excellent work, my friend.

So, the OP is proposing a "take off my hat" mode for employees, allowing them to make their posts appear the same as regular members, for when they are making threads or replies that are not related to official duties.

I'd love such a feature, especially if it could be extended to the moderators. There are plenty of times where I am not posting as a part of my ninja duties, but as a member of this community and to be honest, sometimes the colored text can be a distraction to others.

With that said, there is also the counterpoint that since we ninja and the employees are known, anything that we say or do is going to be seen (with or without a notification to others) as "this person said this!"

Whether or not we can take our hat off, there will always be people who will misinterpret things said casually. So, perhaps there are two reasons for the colored text and the golden septagon. One is to let members know who is speaking, and maybe the other one is to remind the person with the colored text or thread flag that "anything and everything they say can and will be used against them in the court of public opinion".
Exactly Recon. You brought up some good risks of including such a 'take of the hat' feature, but at this point I think the gains are in the majority. Employees and moderators *should* be mature enough to know that they always represent Bungie and post accordingly, whether or not they have colored text, a golden septagon, or just a custom avatar. Drawing so much attention to certain members simply because they are 'part of Bungie' is annoying at best, but more times than not only serves to derail a topic.

In addition, I think a feature like this would allow moderators and employees to post more, knowing that they wouldn't necessary ruin a topic with a short, witty reply.

There are already BNG employees that post on Bnet without gold text, but it is not on a per post basis.

While I would appreciate and use the feature myself (if it existed) I don't think that it would alter or increase my posting habits or the content of my posts. Nor do I think the feature would alter any ninja or employee habits.

The only "real benefit" would be to make a clear distinction between someone's post being "Me doing my job" and "Me just being a part of the community".

The truth is, that even "off duty", those in public servant roles have to adhere to a certain level of conduct and are expected to "act and respond as if on duty" even when they are not. For example, a citizen can walk past a bleeding man on the sidewalk and other than being a callous prick, they haven't done anything truly "wrong". But an off-duty cop, firefighter, paramedic, nurse, doctor, etc. has an obligation to render aid. They are never really 100% "off the clock" or "off the hook".

While I wouldn't equate our roles and responsibilities with those other professions, both the ninja and employees are aware that our posts, official or not, can potentially reflect on Bungie and this community. We always have to act accordingly. Colored text, golden septagon or not.

Why not make edits to the type of colour if it is a reply then it has a special colour if it is for fun then well it is the orginal type.

I think when an employee posts, he/she should check a box if the content is helpful. If the box is not checked, the golden septagon won't appear.

That's the most illogical thing I have ever heard considering the website we are on.

Why do we come to Bungie.net? Why did you first come here? Two, six, ten years ago? Was it to read attempts at clever sarcasm and recycled memes and internet jokes? Was it because you love discussing why something sucks while using said thing to complain about it? Was it the obscure wild speculation about tiny specks of information leaked about a super-hyped project?

No. It wasn't. Not at all. The thing that brought you here is the product Bungie makes. Video games. Things like Oni, Myth, Marathon, and mainly Halo. Because you enjoy those games and you wanted to know more about them and even participate in a community that discusses and shares those games.

And when people that MADE those games post on the forum of this site, the one you visited solely because of their video games, the people who are employed by the company cranking out games you spend so much of your time on, yeah, that should be highlighted. Because them and their product are the sole focus of discussion here. And it'd be nice to know in some way when they lay their two cents on the community in their spare time.

And guess what? They are humans beings, not just faceless robots made to answer your speculations about an upcoming or existing game. They have the right to joke and discuss and outright waste space on this site like the rest of us. Regardless of their posts being highlighted. Even if their posts were on the Google -blam!- ing home page, they still have that right. This is their site, they are here to inform and enhance your enjoyment. Deal with it.

Shouldn't they enjoy the same freedoms you do while posting on this site, if not more? Do ALL your posts have deep informative meaning? Do you never joke or waste space or discuss pointless things? (psst. Hey. I'll tell you a secret. You're doing it RIGHT NOW)

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Now go take a nice, long, deep breath.
